| Text | The production of this record has been made possible through the co-operation of various members of the family in offering information to Dorothy Dodds, Perth, (ON) who compiled it , forwarding it to Helen M. Dodds, Hamilton, (ON) through whose efforts it has been reproduced and arranged by her in booklet form. Ample space is provided for additional information and generations to be recorded as discovered. On the cover of this booklet is to be seen the crest of the Dodds family. It is a drawing taken from a ring belonging to Dr Lee Dodds, of Edmonton, and is said to represent a ferret. This is the name given to an animal which is noted for being a thief. The name 'Dodds' is claimed by some to mean 'cattle-thief; but since many inhabitants of the border district took delight in helping themselves to the cattle of their English neighbours in this 'land debatable', the title of 'cattle thief' may have been one of which they were proud. However, there are others who claim that our name originated in the word 'dod' which means 'hill' in the border district and, consequently, 'Dodds' would refer to the people of the hills, among which flows the Tweed River.
