Rose Gilmour
Rose Isobel Gammons Gilmour, formerly of Almonte, died May 6 in the Great War Memorial Hospital in Perth, at the age of 99 Mrs Gilmour was born April 1, 1881, in Hasting, Minnesota and came to Canada at the age of 13, after the death of her mother. She came to live with her aunt and uncle, Mr And Mrs L.N. Shipman. The daughter of the late Charles Cash Gammons and Janet Craig Gammons, Mrs Gilmour, was educated in Almonte and at the Ottawa Ladies College in Ottawa. Mrs Gilmour's grandfather, John Gemmil Craig, was born in Lanark in 1824; her grandmother, Nancy Walker, was born in Perth in 1832. Her great grandfather, Adam Craig, was born in Lanark, Scotland; He and her great grandmother Janet Gemmil, born in Cummock Ayershire, Scotland, immigrated to Upper Canada and was married in 1823. Mrs Gilmour was married June 30, 1909, in Vancouver to the late Harry Dawson Gilmour. His grandparents had also immigrated to Canada, from Killmarnoch, Scotland. Mr Gilmour was a builder and contractor in Almonte and district. The mother of seven children, was very active in church work. She attended Zion Memorial United Church in Carleton Place, and was a member of the Mission Band Women's Missionary Society, United Church Women, Canadian Legion, and the Women's Institute. Mrs Gilmour is survived by her sons Victor Argyle Gilmour, Carleton Place, Dawson K. Hyrd Gilmour, Peterborough, and her four daughters: Hazel Erratt Sufrey, British Columbia, Rose Godfrey, Carleton Place, Kathleen Mahara, Ottawa, and Marjorie Coulter, Brampton. She was the mother also of the late Ronald A.N. Gilmour. Mrs Gilmour is also survived by her two sisters-in-law, Mrs Eunice Gilmour Turnbull, Montreal, and Mrs Ruth Gammons, California. A public funeral was held May 9 from the Alan Barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place. The service was conducted by Reverend Mitchell. Burial took place at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, with pallbearers Ernest Halladay, Bill Greenwood, Jack Bittle, John Coulter, David Coulter, James Lesway.
