Obituary - Robert Armour
The funeral of Robert Armour, resident of the 8th concessikon of Drummond township, and prominent figure in municipal and educational matters, who died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. Wrathwell of the township of North Elmsley, was held on Monday afternoon from Alex. Blair and Son's Funeral Home to Elmwood Cemetery and largely attended.

Rev. W. R. Alp, minister of St. Paul's United Church, conducted the services.

In his 71st year, Mr. Armour was born in the township of North Burgess, a son of the late John Armour and his wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Shellington.

He was educated in the Upper and Lower Scotch Line public schools and Perth Collegiate Institute where he was an outstanding athlete in football, track and field sports.

Early in life he began farming in Drummond township where, for several years, he was a member of the township council and a school trustee in School Section No. 12. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church in Perth.

He was married to the former Miss Mary Elizabeth Thompson, of North Burgess, who predeceased him in 1943.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs W.J. Wrathwell, of North Elmsley, Miss Margaret Armour, of Ottawa; Mrs. Clifford Buchanan, of Smiths Falls, three sons, Francis Armour, of Smiths Falls, Messrs. Donald Armour and Gordon Armour, of North Burgess, a sister, Misss Mary Armour, of Perth, and a brother, Mr. James Armour of Drummond.

Although in failing health for some years the passing of Robert Gordon Armour came as a shock to his many friends and neighbours and family among whom he was held in high esteem. He was in his 73rd year and passed at the Great War Memorial Hospital on the morning of March 25, 1981.

Born August 24, 1908 he was the second oldest son of Mary E. Thompson and Robert Armour who predeceased him in 1943 and 1947 respectively.

He attended SS#12 Drummond (McGarry) anad Perth Collegiate Institute. On leaving school he worked at the Bank of Montreal in Perth, Goderich and others for several years. After training in other vocations the wide open space claimed him.

He was married to Hilda MacLaren who passed away 1976 in December. Survived by 3 sisters and one brother. Muriel (Mrs. William Rathwell), Perth RR#5; Margaret of Ottawa; Jean (Mrs Clifford Buchanan) of 12 Market St., Smiths Falls and Donald of Perth. A brother Francis predeceased him in 1973 and another brother John S. Murray in infancy.

Funeral Services were held at Blair and Son Chapel conducted by Rev. G.M. Richardson paster (sic) of St. Paul's United Church where Gordon was a faithful member.

Pallbearers were two nephews, Glenn Rathwell and Dean Buchanan; and neighbours and friends Kenneth J. Barr, Lloyd Van Order, Bill Allan and John Somerville.

Beautifulu floral tributes and donations to the heart and cancer funds were mute evience of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by a wide circle of friends.

Robert married Hilda Alice Frances McLaren on 18 Dec 1969. Hilda (daughter of William Alexander McLaren, Jr. and Caroline Matilda "Carrie" Poole) was born on 10 Sep 1898 in Elmsley North Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was christened on 27 Mar 1899 in Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 23 Dec 1976 in Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
