"Richville, July 1.-- . . . Mr. E. J. Spooner for many years a resident of this town, died Saturday night after a protracted illness. Mr. Spooner suffered a severe shock of paralysis early in March last, and although he had been about somewhat since that time, his mind and strength gradually failed. The deceased was an enterprising farmer upon land which he cleared with his own hands, and he was highly respected by all. He was closely identified with the interests of the Congregational church, of which he and his family were members and at the time of his death held the office of deacon and trustee. For years he has been church chorister and has sacrificed time and energy to this important department of church work. Mr. S. was also a veteran of the late war and a member of Rich Post G. A. R. His age was 62 years." [http://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/lccn/sn83031423/1890-07-03/ed-1/seq-1/]

In our last week's letter we made short mention of the death of Miss M. Alice Spencer, which occurred at the residence of her brother, John Spooner, on Sunday, Dec. 28th. Aged twenty-nine years. The deceased was the daughter of the late Edwin J. Spooner, who died July 29th. On Sept. 25th her mother passed away. In just six months from the day her father bade farewell to this world Alice joined them in the better land beyond. She was a patient sufferer for nearly two years and welcomed death as a release from her pain. Early in life she espoused the cause of Christ and was held in high esteem for her pure Christian work and character She was a devoted member of the Congregational church of this village, and for many years was organist of said church choir. She was also an active and working member of the W. C. T. U., and that organization attended her funeral in a body. Knowing her a Christian lady, we can only say she has gone before to lead more anxiously her friends journey to that celestial home above. The funeral service was held at the Congregational church on Tuesday afternoon, her pastor, Rev. T. Davis, assisted by Rev. G. Cross, officiating."
