(Research):Bathurst Concession 1 Lot 22 SW - William Adams

The patent for Lot 22 Concession 1 Bathurst was granted to William Adams in 1824 and remained in his family until the 1870s. He was recorded as arriving from Ireland (1796) via the United States to Canada (1816). Attempts to identify his family have failed as for a search for the family name of Henrietta, his wife. It appears she lived in or about, Providence Rode Island, United States before coming to Canada with William.

Old Town of Coxsackie

March 24th 1772, the northern par of what is now Greene county was formed into a district called the District of Coxsackie, and it was erected into a town March 7th 1788. Of the public records made during the time it was a district, scarcely a vestige remains, except the laying out of a few roads. The only document which is of a public nature, that has been found, is the assessment roll of the year 1787, and the importance of this, as being the only list of taxable inhabitants of this part of the county at that date, fully justifies us in giving it entire. It includes what are now the towns of Durham, Greenville, Coxsackie, New Baltimore, Athens and Cairo.

A Tax List of the District of Coxsackie, agreeable to a warrant assigned to us the subscribers' assessors of said District, dated the 12th day of June 1787 by the Board of Supervisors for the County of Albany, at 2 1/2 d. on a pound:

Though I can find no evidence he is buried here, and he was enumerated as a Baptist on the 1851/2 Census, it is most likely he is buried here with his late wife and her memorial was broken when transcribed in 1993 and I was unable to locate the fragments in 2016.

The son of William (c1776-?) and Henrietta (1777-1820) Adams he was born at Newry, Green Co., New York and baptized at Coxsackie, Greene Co., Neew York. He married first Lillias "Lillie Ferguson (c1802-1868) May 20th, 1825 at First Presbyterian Church at Perth by the Rev. William Bell. He next married Helen Gregory Davidson (c1819-1882) January 12th , 1870 at the residence of J. F. Kennedy, Perth, by the Rev. Thomas Henderson and lastly he married Susan (Morris) McEwen (c1821-?) April 3rd, 1884 at Brockville.

Though his Death Notice in the Perth Courier February 5th, 1892 records his birth at Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland all other sources record the United States with his last marriage recording New York State.

Death of Mr. John W. Adams. On Friday morning last, our venerable townsman, Mr. John W. Adams, on getting up in the morning to kindle the fire was seized with a paralytic stroke, and died shortly after. He had been in his usual good health, apparently, but something like shortness of breath had troubled him for some time, though he could still walk long distances, and was considered even at his age an active man. He had just finished his 89th year on the Saturday before his death.

The late Mr. Adams was one of our oldest inhabitants. He was born in county Tyrone, Ireland, in the year 1803, and when a few years old went with his father to New Jersey, U.S., where the latter became interested in a cotton factory. The venture being disastrous, the father removed to Perth, in the year 1816 - the date of its settlement - and drew land on the Scotch Line, where he farmed till his death. His son John worked on the farm also, but was a good mechanic as well as a farmer, being handy in making anything out of wood or iron. When sickles began to give way for cradles for cutting grain, fifty years ago, Mr. Adams turned his hand to making cradles, and supplied many a local farmer with these new implements. The strides from the reaping hooks of Biblical days to the self-binding harvester of 1892 tells of the time spanned by Mr. Adams' years, and the wonderful improvements in mechanical contrivances in his lifetime.

Mr. Adams was a noted teacher of vocal music, and most of the classes in old times were instructed by he and his brother William now dead many years. Mr. Adams was a member of Knox (Presbyterian) church and a faithful attendant at its ministrations.

He was married three times but was without children. His last wife survives her aged partner, and has the sympathy of all friends.

The funeral took place on Monday last to the old burying ground, and was attended largely both from town and country. Rev. James Ross, B.D., of Knox church, preached a funeral sermon last Sabbath morning in memory of the deceased from the words: Well done thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things." The few things over which he was faithful were brought out and recommended as examples to all Christians.

John Westland Adams Jr. was the nephew of John Westland Adams Sr. (memorial #167265735)

John Westland Adams, the son of William Robert Adams (c1810-1869) and Eleanor Susannah (Ellis/Adams) Hastings (1813-1895), he was named after his uncle John Westland Adams who is likely the "sorrowing uncle" who buried him and his brother, Edward George, an ex Reeve of North Crosby, is interred in this cemetery as well and was the informant at his death on his Ontario Death registration. His mother may be buried here with her 2nd husband Eleazar Hastings (1807-1882) as there is no record of her burial in Cataraqui Cemetery with her first.

Though his Death Notice in the Perth Courier February 5th, 1892 records his birth at Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland all other sources record the United States with his last marriage recording New York State.

Death of Mr. John W. Adams. On Friday morning last, our venerable townsman, Mr. John W. Adams, on getting up in the morning to kindle the fire was seized with a paralytic stroke, and died shortly after. He had been in his usual good health, apparently, but something like shortness of breath had troubled him for some time, though he could still walk long distances, and was considered even at his age an active man. He had just finished his 89th year on the Saturday before his death.

The late Mr. Adams was one of our oldest inhabitants. He was born in county Tyrone, Ireland, in the year 1803, and when a few years old went with his father to New Jersey, U.S., where the latter became interested in a cotton factory. The venture being disastrous, the father removed to Perth, in the year 1816 - the date of its settlement - and drew land on the Scotch Line, where he farmed till his death. His son John worked on the farm also, but was a good mechanic as well as a farmer, being handy in making anything out of wood or iron. When sickles began to give way for cradles for cutting grain, fifty years ago, Mr. Adams turned his hand to making cradles, and supplied many a local farmer with these new implements. The strides from the reaping hooks of Biblical days to the self-binding harvester of 1892 tells of the time spanned by Mr. Adams' years, and the wonderful improvements in mechanical contrivances in his lifetime.

Mr. Adams was a noted teacher of vocal music, and most of the classes in old times were instructed by he and his brother William now dead many years. Mr. Adams was a member of Knox (Presbyterian) church and a faithful attendant at its ministrations.

He was married three times but was without children. His last wife survives her aged partner, and has the sympathy of all friends.

The funeral took place on Monday last to the old burying ground, and was attended largely both from town and country. Rev. James Ross, B.D., of Knox church, preached a funeral sermon last Sabbath morning in memory of the deceased from the words: Well done thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things." The few things over which he was faithful were brought out and recommended as examples to all Christians.

The Township of Bathurst has lost another of its oldest and highly honored residents in the person of Mr. David Young, who died at his home in Glen Tay on Saturday, June 13th. The cause of death is attributed to kidney troubles. Mr. Young had ever been a strong and healthy man and the illness which caused his death was of three months duration. Deceased was a French Canadian by birth, having been born below Ottawa in Quebec in 1831. He came to Perth when a young man of seventeen, and apprenticed himself to a Mr. Hunter who carried on a carriage-making business in the stand now occupied by Mr. Cooper, blacksmith, on Gore Street east. He remained here for ten years when he moved to Glen Tay, where he had secured a position as foreman over the carriage industry of the late James Kearns, which position he held till the works were closed down. He then opened a shop for himself which he conducted till he was compelled to retire from business activity three months ago owing to his illness.

Mr. Young was a manly man, honored and respected by everyone aand his friends were legion. He had often beek asked to enter municipal life, but his inclination did not lie that way. In politics he was a Reformer.

He was married to Zoe Berthiaume, of Ottawa, fifty-one years ago, who with seven daughters and four sons survive. The children are Dennis, Smiths Falls; Edward, Perth; Eugene, Lanark; Patrick, Milwaukee' Mrs J.P. Byrne, Perth; Mrs. J. T. Noonan, Ottawa; Mrs. John Brady, Bathurst; Mrs Cornell, Philadelphia; and Misses Agnes, Mary and Josephine, at home.

The funeral took place on Monday morning at ten o'clock, the procession proceeding from his alte residence to St. John's Church thence to the Catholic Cemetery. There were 135 carriages in line.

Dodds - In the sudden death of Mrs. Ralph Dodds, of Glen Tay, on Thursday morning last that community and township is bereft of a whole hearted woman. Mrs. Dodds was in her usual health and on Thursday morning was going about as usual until about 10 o'clock when she fell in a faint. Members of the family went to her aid immediately but could do nothing and she passed away a few moments later. Heart trouble won the cause.

Deceased was born in Rochester 72 years ago, daughter of James McKay. When three years of age she came to live with her uncle the late John W. Adams, on the Scotch Line, and his home was her home until her marriage with Mr. Ralph Dodds in 1851. Their marriage was a long and happy one and the bereaved and aged husband is tendered the sympathy of the community in the sudden loss he has been called upon to bear in the death of his sharer of joyts and sorrows for more than 55 years.

Eight children were born to the union: Alex., Davidson Man.; Mrs. Robert Miller, 3rd line of Bathurst; Mrs. Robert Miller, Rideau Ferry; John A., on the homestead; James (deceased), Mrs. R.M. Rudsdale, 3rd line Bathurst; Mrs. Lorenzo Miller, Crookston Minn.; Matthew, Smiths Falls.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon to Elmwood cemetery; service was conducted at the house and grave by Revs. D Currie and J.G. Greig. The pallbearers were relatives of the deceased. The funeral cortege was a long one and evidenced not only respect and esteem but sympathy for the family in their sudden loss.

"Cowie. The death occurred at his home on the Scotch Line Sunday morning at ten o'clock of Mr. Wm. Cowie in his 79th year. Deceased had been troubled with his heart for some time, the ultimate cause of his demise. He was a son of the late Robert Cowie of Christorphon, Scotland and Jane Adams of Utica, N. Y. He was born at Utica, N. Y., on the 25th of December, 1840, and came to this country with his parents when a boy. Settling on the Scotch Line at the age of 22 years on the farm where he died, he married Margaret Kemp of Ramsay, who predeceased him 32 years, leaving a family of five sons and two daughters, Jessie died two years later. They are: Robert of Winnipeg; James of Balderson; William of Juanita, Sask.; Frank of Morden, Sask.; Isaac of Ottawa, and Mrs. Wm. Rea of Lethbridge, Alta. Deceased later married Catharine MacKenzie of Halifax, N. S., who survives with two sons and one daughter: Garvilla at home, Nelson of Alberta, and Walter who was lost on the Llandovery Castle hospital ship. Deceased had farmed on the Scotch Line for over 50 years. The funeral took place on Tuesday at 2:30 o'clock to the old Presbyterian cemetery."

Francis Cowie
Mr Francis William Cowie, a former ex-deputy reeve of Almonte, died at an Ottawa hospital on Thursday. Born in Almonte 78 years ago. Mr Cowie spent most of his life here, but he had been in the west for nearly 15 years lately. During his life he filled many important positions in Almonte, including being a member of the Almonte town council, and deputy reeve, In politics he was a Conservative, and also took a keen interest in municipal matters. He owned a large pump factory in Almonte, and latterly spent a great part of his time travelling in the west, attending to his numerous interests. During the winters, he lived with his daughter, Mrs George Bennett. In addition to his daughter, Mrs Bennett, Ottawa, and two little grandchildren. Francis and Monie, he is survived by a sister, Mrs Porteous, Seattle, Wash. The funeral took place from the residence of Mrs Bennett, 196 Lyon street, to the Central Depot, enroute to Almonte, where interment took place on Saturday morning. There were many old friends at the funeral.

Francis married Annie Garland in 1872. Annie (daughter of John Garland and Ann Goodall) was born on 19 Mar 1850 in Goulbourn Twp, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; died on 7 Sep 1893 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. The late Mr. James Cowie.
The festivities of New Year's Day were at their height in town when the death was announced of Mr. Jas. Cowie, after less, than a week's illness from inflammation of the lungs. Many of our towns men had scarcely heard of his illness, and the sad news came as a shock to them, and cast a gloom over the town. Mr. Cowie took cold while driving to Carleton Place, on Christmas, and it developed rapidly, ending in what is known as broncho-pneumonia. Everything possible was done to avert a fatal termination - Dr. Wright, of Ottawa, being called in, in addition to the local physicians?but medical skill and the most assiduous care proved of no avail, and on Wednesday forenoon the spirit went out to its Maker.

The late Mr Cowie was in his 41st year. Few men in the district were better known, his business taking him all over Eastern Ontario. He was proprietor of the Al-monte pump factory and agent for Patterson and Bros., agricultural implement manufacturers. He was a pushing business man, and took a warm interest in the affairs of the town, occupying the position of councillor for a time.

Five young boys and one girl, with the mother, survive to mourn the loss of a kind hearted and devoted parent and husband, and they have the earnest sympathy of our townspeople generally in their irreparable loss.
