    Died:
BOOK - HISTORY OF RICE & STEELE COUNTIES VOL I & II 1910. John C. Couper is one of the county's venerable and distinguished citizens, one of those who may well be described as ripe in years and wisdom. He still retains the vigor of a much younger man, and still exerts, as he always has, an important influence for good in the community. He was born Jan. 24, 1830, at Morristown, N. Y., and was educated in the common schools and in Ogdensburg Academy. He taught school several terms, and in 1852 went to Albion, Michigan. In 1852, he crossed the western plains, with a wagon train to California. In September, 1854, he returned home via Lake Nicaragua and New York City. He was married Jan. 1, 1855, to Harriet Johnson, and together they came to Minnesota, locating in Sciota, Dakota county. In 1862 he was sent to the state legislature. During the Civil War he enlisted in Company F, Eighth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, serving as sergeant and orderly three years until the close of the war, two years in the Indian campaign in Minnesota and the Dakotas, and one year in the South in Tennessee and North Carolina. In 1866 he came to Northfield, where he has since made his home. March 1, 1886, he engaged in the mercantile business in the firm of J. C. and F. J. Couper and continued in business until Nov. 5, 1908. He has now retired from active business and is enjoying the crowning fruits of a well spent life. He has been a justice of the peace many years, has been town supervisor, and for eleven years served with justice and distinction as judge of the municipal court of Northfield. He is a charter member, past commander and the present chaplain of the J. L. Heywood Post, G. A. R., and past junior commander of the Department of Minnesota. He was for several years a trustee of the Congregational society at Northfield. He has also served as president of the Northfield Fair Association. In the family were six children: Dr. Joseph E. Couper, of Blue Earth, Minn., died in 1906; Charles S. lives in Rochester. Fen nimore J. lives in Alberta, Canada. Mrs. Evaline C. Miller lives in Northfield; Prof. George B. Couper lives in Cherryville, Oregon. Miss Hattie lives at home. Judge Couper's parents came from South Shields, England, in 1817, and settled in the wilds of northern New York. The father was a prominent man, and held many positions of public trust and honor.

    Died:
Walter Thomas Couper, widely known leader in law, business and political circles, died suddenly at his home on Chesnut Street, June 1, 1934. He was 64 years old.

Mr. Couper was the victim of a sudden heart attack. While he had not been in good health for the last 18 months and had slowly been withdrawing from more strenuous activities in Republican politics and business, it was not known that his heart was seriously affected.

Death came suddenly in a room on the second floor of his home as he was preparing to leave for New York City to bring back a son, Frederic, who has been undergoing treatment for injuries suffered while the young man was a member of the Binghamton Central High Football team in 1928. The Couper family had planned to go early next week to the commencement at Elmira College where their daughter, Mary, is an honor member of the graduating class.

Ruth Couper heard her husband fall as he passed from one room to another on the second floor and rushed to his side but he already was dead.

Walter Couper was prominent in the affairs of the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, the Central YMCA and the Broome County Bar Association. He was widely known in the Republican Party having been assistant corporation counsel in 1917 and having served as Supervisor from the Third Ward for 14 years prior to his retirement on January 1, 1934.

He was born in Morristown, St. Lawrence County on April 13, 1870, the son of Joseph P. Couper and Hannah Wilson Couper. He attended the Ogdensburg Academy and graduated in 1888. He then attended and graduated from Hamilton College in 1892 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and the following year receiving a Master of Arts degree.
He completed his course in law at the University of Minnesota and received his Bachelor of Laws in 1905 and was admitted to practice law in that state the same year.
Walter came to Binghamton in 1908 and was associated with W. J. & F. W. Welsh, one of the leading law firms in the area. He continued with the firm until 1915 when he became a partner. It was then known as Welsh and Couper. Eventually through business partner changes, the firm became Couper, Terry and Turnbull.
He was counsel for the Binghamton Savings Bank and associate counsel for the City National Bank of Binghamton. Walter had held at various times the chairmanship of every important committee on the Board of Supervisors and it was his record of strength and ability in this connection that made him regarded as a key man in this group.

He brought into his service information acquired during years of teaching for four years at Hamilton College after his graduation and as principal of the Boonville High School for five years. Later he served at the head of the department of history in the East High School of Minneapolis MN, while fitting himself for his law career by night study at the University of Minnesota.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association and Broome County Bar Association. He also belonged to the University Club, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi Beta Kappa, Honorary Scholarship Society and Delta Chi.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Delia Williams Couper; daughters Rachel Williams Couper and Mary Williams Couper; sons, Edgar Williams Couper and Frederic Maxwell Couper; sister, Mrs. J. B. Witherhead, Morristown and a brother, Edgar J. Couper of Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral service was held and interment followed in the Couper plot of the Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, NY.

Walter married Ruth Delia Williams in 1897. Ruth (daughter of Elliott Strong Williams and Rachel Wood Squires) was born on 17 Sep 1875 in Kirkland, Oneida County, New York, United States; died on 3 Oct 1960 in Binghamton, Broome County, New York, United States; was buried in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, Broome County, New York, United States. Died:
    Ogdensburg Journal - Monday July 22, 1912
Morristown, July 22 - Carroll E. Colton, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Colton, died at his home in the English Settlement near Morristown Tuesday morning, July 16. Carroll Erwin Colton was born in Morristown February 25, 1896. When between two and three years old he was suddenly and without any apparent cause stricken with that dread disease, spinal meningitis and for eight weeks his life hung in the balance. Gradually however his health returned and although never physically strong, he was given a good degree of health. The brain that in that terrible disease so often becomes affected, in his case remained unclouded and as the years passed he developed into an exceptionally keen thinker. Naturally of a cheerful happy disposition, he enjoyed life in his own quiet way. A year or two ago however, his strength began to diminish somewhat and he was forced to face the fact that the ball games and other sports so dear to every boy's heart, were denied him. His strong character and indomitable courage made him keep this knowledge greatly to himself and it was not until of late that his friends realized how much the loss of these things must have meant to him. He never wished to be a subject of pity, but bravely bore the sufferings that must have been his. He seldom alluded to his condition and when friends inquired how he was, always, even to the last answered cheerfully. He attended the high school in Morristown village the past four years, passed his examinations and on June 24th attended the closing exercises of the school. This was the last time he attended anything away from his home, his courage and his determination having kept him up until his school duties were ended. After having been examined by his physician, he asked his mother to tell him just what the doctor's opinion was, adding, 'You need not mind telling me for I am not afraid to die.' Upon learning the truth that his days were numbered, he assured her that God knew best. He was satisfied. His whole thought seemed to be for others rather than himself. He seemed to feel it mattered not for him if in any way he could lighten the sorrow of those he loved. On August 27, 1907, when only eleven years old, he united with the Presbyterian church here. He had from early childhood been a member of its Sunday school. He also was a member of the Christian Endeavor Society and at the time of his death held the office of treasurer. The funeral service was held at his late home, Thursday afternoon, and was largely attended. His pastor, Rev. C. E. Ray, conducted the service.
