    Died:
In the death of William Purdon, Sr., which occurred at his residence in the township of Dalhousie on the evening of Friday, Sept. 4, the well known figure in the community has been removed. In the year 1821 his parents came from Glasgow and with other families of Scotland formed the nucleus of a new settlement in what is now known as Dalhousie Township. His father was an officer in the Lancashire Militia and it was during a sojourn in England that the subject of this sketch was born. The event took place December 15, 1813. One cannot but admire the hardiness and bravery of the early pioneers. The majority of them were unacquainted with farming and did not even know how to chop down a tree. But with that Scottish determination which will never give in even when things are at their worst, they set to work to clear the land and by degrees hewed out their farms and forced a subsistence from the unwilling soil. The stories of the hardships endured in those early days in which he fully shared was told some years ago by Mr. Purdon himself in a column in the Courier. Mr. Purdon was a Reformer in politics and one who was such by reading and thinking. He was an ardent admirer of the late Alexander McKenzie the humble born Premier of Canada. Mr. Purdon was a man of intelligence and a wide reader. He assisted in the establishment and was a constant patron of the Dalhousie library which was formed early in the history of the township and provided the best intellectual food at a time when newspapers and magazines wee not so numerous or available as today. He was ever ready to forward every movement for the good of the community. He served the community for many years both as councilor and reeve and was a member of Dalhousie's firs council. For 20 years he served as a school trustee and secretary-treasurer of that section. Thoroughly honest and upright in all his dealings, a kind neighbor and general friend, he won the love and respect of the entire community. It is related of him that during the Franco-Prussian War when wheat was over $2.00 a bushel he refused to take more than $1.50 a bushel considering that enough to ask of his neighbors, many of whom required it for seed. As another instance of his kindness of heart, he required that he should be buried in a plain coffin and without a hearse which he himself could well afford lest such an example should lead another to extravagance beyond his means and the widow and orphans be thereby robbed of their support. His last illness was long. He was stricken with the terrible disease of cancer. The constant pain he suffered he bore with Christian fortitude. He was in possession of all his faculties to the last and faced death without fear, looking forward to Christ the Savior to the hope of a glorious immortality. His partner in life whose maiden name was Isabella Chalmers died three years ago in December of 1893. They reared a large family 12 of whom, 9 sons and 3 daughters, grew up to adulthood and survive their parents. One died in infancy. Of the children, five sons and two daughters reside in Dalhousie, one son in the county of Huron; on daughter in Michigan; three sons in the northwestern States; all have done well. James, who is a merchant in Dakota, has served for some time in the state legislature. The funeral took place on Sunday September 6 and was largely attended. The remains were interred in the Highland Line Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Jas. Binnie, B.A. of McDonald's Corners. With Mr. Purdon's death closes the first 75 years of Dalhousie's history

    Notes:

    Died:
A Stonewall ( Man. ) paper publishes the following obituary of the late Mr. Robert Purdon of Dalhousie: Mr. Robert Purdon, Sr., died on Saturday morning 30th May at the residence of Mr. David Farquhar, Stony Mountain . It is at all times a painful duty to chronicle the death of a friend and a neighbor, but in this case it seems doubly so, partly on account of the sudden shock to the whole community, but chiefly because we have all lost a highly respected and faithful friend. Mr. Purdon came up from Ontario just about a year ago and spent the intervening time visiting his two daughters Mrs. Farquhar and Mrs. McOuat and his son, Mr. R. Purdon; and although, comparatively speaking, a stranger in this country, never was there a man more happy and contented than he. His pleasant countenance was always expressive of a glad heart within. Although only a short time among us, he had, by his winning ways and affectionate manner, formed a large circle of friends in this community and his sudden and unexpected demise has made many hearts sad. The deceased was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church and on the Sunday preceding his death occupied his seat in the congregation in his natural good health. The remains were taken to Ontario for interment. We join with others in extending our heartfelt sympathy to those who mourn the loss of an affectionate father and friend.

More on the Late Robert Purdon? One of Dalhousie's earliest settlers, Mr. Robert Purdon, was laid to his long bed of rest, in the Highland Line Cemetery on Thursday of last week, his remains having arrived from Manitoba a few days before. Deceased was either born in Glasgow , Scotland , and left it, with his parents, as an infant, or was born in Dalhousie in the first year of the settlement. He was a farmer by occupation and served in the Dalhousie Council for some years. He had given up farming some years ago and lived with either one or other of his children; about a year ago left Dalhousie for Manitoba to visit his children there. On the eve of returning home he was stricken with his fatal illness, and died at Stony Mountain , Manitoba , on the 30th of May, in his 75th year and his remains were forwarded to Dalhousie for burial. His children are Mrs. John McOuat, and Mrs. D. Farquhar, Stony Mountain , Mr. James Pardon and Mr. William Park, Dalhousie. Mr. William Purdon, Dalhousie and Mr. John Purdon, Drummond, are brothers of his. Deceased was a sound Reformer all his days.

    Died:
On the evening of Saturday, the 7th inst., after a severe illness of about a month, Mr. James Purdon passed to his long home. He was a native of Dalhousie, Lanark, the first abode of many individuals of sterling excellence. He removed from there in 1870 to this part, where he lived until last year, when he sold his farm and removed again to a house formerly occupied by Mr. Robert Laing, near Rogerville. About two months ago he went to Manitoba for the purpose of viewing that country, and taking up land if pleased with the prospect, but not being favorably impressed he made no purchases, and was returning home and had reached the metropolis when he began to feel unwell. Here he called upon a medical man, who advised him to speed his way home as rapidly as possible, as the condition of his system indicated fever. After arriving home it was soon ascertained that the information given him was too true, and that he was a victim of that fatal malady, typhoid fever, to which he succumbed at the age of 58 years, just a little over six years and five months after his wife, leaving a family of four boys and three girls, all grown up with the exception of two boys. Deceased was a very intelligent and well-informed man, a good reasoner and fine conversationalist, liberal in his views and politics, generous and benevolent in his actions, and was widely and favorably known. His remains were buried at Cromarty and his funeral was largely attended by friends and relatives, who deeply sympathized with the bereaved orphans.

James Purdon, Pioneer is Buried at Riverside

Funeral services for James Purdon, 86, pioneer Wahpeton merchant, who died Thursday evening at the Wahpeton hospital from complications due to old age were held from the Congregational church Saturday afternoon, with Rev, c.F. Dunham in charge. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery where the Odd Fellows funeral ritual was observed.

For several months Mr Purdon has been in poor health. He was taken to the hospital September 2, when his condition became serious. Death relieved the suffering of one who during his 46 years residence in Wahpeton had been active in the civic affairs of the city and in its up building.

Mr Purdon was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1840. He was married there and moved with his family to Alexandria, Minnesota, in 1868, where he took a homestead. Later he entered the contracting and building business. While a resident of Alexandria he served two terms as clerk of court of Douglas county. Mrs Purdon died at Alexandria and later Mr Purdon married Miss Annette Anderson. The family moved to Wahpeton in 1879, where Mr Purdon established a mercantile business, in which his brother, Dave, and a son,William R, were associated. This enterprise was conducted under the name of Purdon & Company, until about eight years ago, when it was discontinued because of the advancing age of Mr Purdon.

During his residence in Wahpeton, Mr Purdon served in many positions of trust. He served the city as alderman, president of the council and as mayor. He was twice elected to the legislature from this county, serving in territorial days just before the state was admitted to the union in 1889.

    Died:
Death called one of the first settlers of Orange township and one of the oldest citizens of Alexandria when Andrew Purdon passed away Saturday night, February 4, at 11:30 o'clock at the Carlquist residence in this city, aged 86 years. Mr. Purdon had lived in Alexandria since 1873 and was one of the best known and well liked citizens of this community. Death was caused by pneumonia after an illness of about two weeks.
Andrew Purdon was born in Lanark county, Canada, the son of William and Isabelle Chalmers Purdon. He grew to manhood there and came to Minnesota in 1868, taking up a claim in Orange township. After proving up on the homestead he moved to Alexandria, building a home on the present site of the Mrs. C. J. Carlquist residence. He was married in Alexandria on November 4, 1869, to Annie Walker, who had been a neighbor in Ontario and who had come to Minnesota with her parents about the time that Mr. Purdon came here. Three children were born of this union: Henry and Ida K., who died in childhood, and William D., who is a vice president of the Guardian Trust Company of Cleveland, Ohio. A brother, David Purdon, lives at Wahpeton, N.D., and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Scott, lives at McDonald's Corners, Ontario. A niece, Mrs. Lucy P. Barber of Wahpeton, N.D., who lived with Mr. and Mrs. Purdon from childhood also survives him.
Mr. Purdon was engaged for many years in the wagonmaker's trade. In 1908 Mrs. Purdon passed away and after her death Mr. Purdon sold his home to Mrs. C. J. Carlquist, reserving one room for himself, so that was his home during all of the sixty years of his life in Alexandria.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Congregational church, of which he was the oldest member. Rev. Harry Blunt officiated. Burial was in Kinkead cemetery. The pallbearers were: A. A. Secord, H. E. Leach, Dr. L. M. Boyd, Howard Stevens, E. J. Brandt and Will Haberer.
