Spooner, widow of Deacon E. J. Spooner, recently deceased, died at her home here Sept. 25th, after a two weeks illness. She was attended by Dr. Brownlow, of Ogdensburg and McFalls, of Gouverneur, but all that medical skill could do proved in vain.
She wasted to a mere skeleton and suffered agonies until death came to her relief. Mrs. Spooner was a member of the congregational church and prominent as a Christian worker. She leaves six children to mourn her loss, viz: three daughters, Mrs. B. F. Chandler, of this village, Mrs. Anna B. Spencer, of DeKalb and Alice M., who has been dangerously sick for months past. Three sons, Fred, John C. and Frank. The funeral services were held from the Congregational Church, which was crowded with mourning friends. The sermon by the pastor, Rev. T. T. Davies, was full of comfort and consolation."

    Obituary
Catherine Gilmour, daughter of Arthur and Mary Gilmour, was born near Ogdensburg, New York, March 16, 1846 and was educated in the schools there and there taught school.
After the family moved to Iowa, she was married in 1866 to Clark Heald. In 1872 they moved to Waubaunsee County, Kansas and thence to Ottawa County in 1874, taking a homestead. They lived in Grant Township many years.
Mrs. Heald was at one time president of the Womens Relief Corps and it was while serving as patriotic instructor that she became instrumental in placing flags in the churches and schools of Minneapolis. The results are still telling their own story to our youth.
She was a good woman, gentle of speech and manner, and loved to do a good deed in a kind and unobtrusive way. She loved music and good books and reading brought her many hours of comfort and pleasure in her late years. She had known all too well of the hardships of the pioneer wife and mother.

Catherine married Clark Heald on 25 Sep 1866 in Algona, Kossuth County, Iowa, United States. Clark (son of Living) was born on 12 Feb 1830 in Belleville, Jefferson County, New York, United States; died on 27 Sep 1900 in Minneapolis, Ottawa County, Kansas, United States; was buried in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis, Ottawa County, Kansas, United States. Her obituary appeared on 11 Feb 1903 in the St. Lawrence Republican and Ogdensburgh Weekly Journal in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence, New York, as follows: "North Hammond, Feb. 9.--

Our community was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Miss Maggie Miller, which occurred in Ottawa, Feb. 4th, of measles. A few days before she had been invited by a girl friend to visit in Ottawa, and after arriving there both girls were taken ill of measles. Miss Miller was always a frail girl and only a few months ago had a severe run of typhoid fever and had not fully recovered her strength. When her condition became alarming last week relatives were telegraphed for and arrived shortly before death.

Her remains were brought to Ogdensburg, and funeral services were held at the home of her brother, Walter Miller, and Friday morning she was buried in Pine Grove [sic] cemetery at Morristown beside her parents and brother. She leaves three brothers to mourn her loss, Walter, of Ogdensburg; Edward [sic] of Morristown, and Frank, of Hammond.

Miss Miller was a most estimable young lady and for many years resided in this vicinity where she has a legion of friends who will deeply regret her untimely death. She was a member of the Congregational Endeavor society of this place. It is expected the other young lady will recover."

In our last week's letter we made short mention of the death of Miss M. Alice Spencer, which occurred at the residence of her brother, John Spooner, on Sunday, Dec. 28th. Aged twenty-nine years. The deceased was the daughter of the late Edwin J. Spooner, who died July 29th. On Sept. 25th her mother passed away. In just six months from the day her father bade farewell to this world Alice joined them in the better land beyond. She was a patient sufferer for nearly two years and welcomed death as a release from her pain. Early in life she espoused the cause of Christ and was held in high esteem for her pure Christian work and character She was a devoted member of the Congregational church of this village, and for many years was organist of said church choir. She was also an active and working member of the W. C. T. U., and that organization attended her funeral in a body. Knowing her a Christian lady, we can only say she has gone before to lead more anxiously her friends journey to that celestial home above. The funeral service was held at the Congregational church on Tuesday afternoon, her pastor, Rev. T. Davis, assisted by Rev. G. Cross, officiating."
