Immigration:
Carol Bennett in the Lanark Society Settlers notes a John Baird, 53 for which she could find no further trace. She suggests that he was travelling out to join a family who had come earlier.
I believe that John travelled with the immigrants of the society and after surveying conditions and opportunities in the new colony, returned to Scotland and his family. He later returned with plans to establish mills in Ramsay township.

Occupation:
John Baird came to the Bennie's Corners district in 1829 and he built the mill which today serves as the Tait McKenzie Memorial museum, "The Mill of Kintail". He had a wife and four children who joined him as at a later date, the children being William, Isabella, John and Jean Baird.

The Late Miss Baird
Last autumn Miss Jeanie Baird one of the well-known Baird sisters on the eighth line of Ramsay, accidentally fell and injured her leg, since which time she was unable to walk, and at her great age, 84, she declined by degrees till last Friday evening, when she paid the debt of nature. Deceased was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and came to Canada with her parents sixty-four years ago, settling the same year on the homestead in Ramsay on which she died, on which she spent all her life in Canada. In the early days the family was one of the most prominent and respected in the district, and the deceased lady was an intelligent, wellread person, with unusual powers as a musician, having been sent of Belfast, Ireland, to finish her musical training. Like all the rest of the family, she had quite a reputation for her knowledge of law. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and was largely attended. Rev Mr. Mitchell officiated. The sister of deceased, Miss Bella Baird, was with deceased in the closing years of her life, and the latter had the attention of other kind and thoughtful relatives and friends.

Very Sudden Death
Last Monday morning at half-past eight, while Mr Gilbert Cannon was conversing with Mr Wm Baird in the latter's residence, Mr Baird , who had been sitting up, made an effort to get into bed, and while doing so fell to the floor and expired immediately. He had been troubled with heart disease for some time, and it was feared that the thread of life in his case might be broken at any time; but few thought he would be cut off with such terrible suddenness, Mr Baird had borne beyond life's allotted span, and his continued sickness had greatly weakened him. He was of a quiet disposition, a great reader, and was possessed of a valuable fund of knowledge; and those who were intimate with him say that, although of a somewhat blunt exterior, he was a genial conversationalist and a warm-hearted friend. His lengthy connection with the woolen mill here made him a familiar figure on our streets up to the commencement of his illness; and many expressions of regret at his sudden removal are heard. Mrs Baird has the sympathy of a host of friends in her bereavement. The funeral take place this (Thursday) afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery.

The Late John Baird
Mr. John Baird, proprietor of the woolen mill here, died at his home on the eighth line of Ramsay on Saturday last, aged 74 years. He had been ill for a couple of years, and for months past was quite helpless. He had not been able to come to town for nearly a year prior to his demise. Deceased was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and came to Canada with his parents over sixty years ago. His father settled on the eighth line shortly after arriving, and lived there with his family till his death, about twenty-five years ago. The family was one to the most prominent and respected in the township. In the early days they carried on a mercantile business in Ramsay, and built a grist mill and oatmeal mill on their farm, in which lines they did a flourishing business. The older residents tell us that for twenty years or more they had a contract to supply the Hudson Bay Co. with flour, and that it was not an uncommon sight to see the H.B. Co's. "Trains," consisting of one hundred sleighs or more, driven by Frenchmen, leave the Baird mills on their long trip via Pembroke and Fort William for the forts at Mattawa, Temiscamingue and points further north. About thirty years ago deceased secured the grist mill in town which was so long conducted by the late Alexander McLean, and operations in Ramsay were discontinued. Mr Baird also purchased the present woolen mill from Mr. Gilbert Cannon twenty-two years ago, and was proprietor of it at his death. Like his brother William, who died a few years ago, and the sisters who remain deceased was an exceedingly well-informed man, and had a penchant for information on matters of law. He never married. Although of a somewhat eccentric nature, the late John Baird was generous, genial and kind, and interesting conversationalist, and won the esteem of his employees and all who were intimate with him. A few decades ago the homestead in Ramsay was one of the finest properties in the township, in a grand location; but for many years back it has been neglected, and has sadly fallen from its proud position. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the remains being interred in the eighth line cemetery. Rev Mr. Mitchell officiated. The mill here has been closed since Mr. Baird's death but will resume operations next week.

Miss Isabella Baird
One of the best-known women in this section was Miss Isabella Baird, only surviving sister of the late Messrs. John and William Baird, who were factory-owners here for many years. Since the death of her sister Jeanie (who lived with her on the farm on the eighth line of Ramsay) Miss Baird resided alone in the old homestead. Mr. David Moir and family and some of the nearer neighbours looking to her interests. Last Thursday Dr. Burns called on Miss Baird, and found her in her customary health. On Saturday evening Mrs John Snedden called and found the doors locked. next morning, getting uneasy, Mrs Snedden had her son and his wife go over; They did so, and on entering the house found Miss Baird lying in bed unconscious. Medical help was summoned and all that could be done for her was done but on Monday evening she succumbed, never having regained consciousness from the time she took a paralytic stroke, with is supposed to have been while in bed during Friday night. Deceased was a remarkable women for her wide knowledge on many subjects, and particularly for her skill in discussing points of law. She was the last survivor of the family. With her demise the name is blotted out. Miss Baird was born in Glasgow, Scotland, seventy-five years ago, and came to Canada with her parents sixty-six years ago, settling the same year on the farm on which she died. In the early years the Baird family was one of the most prominent in the district, noted for their intelligence, as well as for some eccentric characteristics. Deceased made a will leaving her effects to Mr. Gilbert Allan, of Ottawa. It is said that stored away in the residence safe some family heirlooms and other goods that bear evidence of the refinement and taste that characterized the Baird family in their younger days. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery. Rev Mr. Hutcheon officiated.

The Late Wm Wilson
After a lengthened period of extreme mental and bodily suffering Mr William Wilson, of Appleton, found a happy release in death last Sunday evening. No man in Ramsay more thoroughly enjoyed the respect and esteem of his friends and neighbours, and the announcement of his death carried deep and sincere sorrow to many a heart. The late Mr Wilson was a native of Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He emigrated to this country with his father's family in 1828. Seven years later he cleared the land and built the house in which he has lived ever since. In the year 1836 he married Flora Lammie (who died about eight years ago), and had a family of two daughters and ten sons. Eight sons survive him, five of whom were with him in his last moments. For a number of years he had been an architect, and has left many monuments of his skill and handiwork. A man of more than ordinary intelligence, he had a well stocked library and well stored mind. He beautified his home, and planted with his own hands many trees, which are much admired by travellers passing his late residence. He was a member of the first council of the municipality of Ramsay for two years, but declined re-election. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church for fifty-two years, and an elder for the last fifteen. About three years ago he had an attack of effusion of blood on the brain, from which he never recovered, but gradually became feebler until his death. He long ago made his peace with God, and calmly awaited the time when he would be summoned home. For him death had no terrors, no sting. He had a firm abiding faith in his Saviour, and frequently during the last two years had besought God to take him to himself. "May our latter end be like his."

William married Flora Lammie in 1836. Flora was born in 1816 in North Ayrshire, Scotland; died on 25 Oct 1879 in Appleton, Ramsay Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

As we go to press we learn of the death of Mrs. John Bell, High Street. The deceased lady was born in Scotland, and came to this country with the early settlers. Her husband died many years ago. For thirty years or more she has been an invalid and for nearly twenty years has not been able to leave her bed. Her maiden name was Margaret Wilson and she was a sister of Mr. A. Wilson Sr., of Appleton. She was probably the oldest living female citizen of Carleton Place and her death removes another of the old landmarks. Mr A.W. Bell, our well known townsman, is a son, and another son, Mr. George Bell, is in the civil service at Ottawa. Miss Mary Bell, who has been a companion for her mother all her life, is the only daughter residing here. The interment will be made in the family burial plot at Perth.

Mr Andrew Wilson's Demise
One of Lanark County's Stal-Men Passes Away After Months of Suffering Patiently Borne. After an illness of more than six months, Mr Andrew Wilson, sr., one of the most prominent men in the political and social life of Lanark county, passed away from a painful disease, gangrene. Mr Wilson was born in the parish of New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on the 20th of February, 1820. He migrated to this country with his father, Mr Jas Wilson, in 1825. His father settled on the farm on the 10th concession of Ramsay where the deceased resided until about twelve years ago when he moved to Appleton, where he has since lived, his son James, succeeding on the farm. They were preceded to this country by the deceased's two uncles, Messrs William and Robert Baird, in 1821. His father bought the farm on which he settled from the Canada company for eight shillings and nine pence per acre. His father died about fifty years ago being denied the pleasures of his labours when the hardships of pioneer life were passed. Mr Andrew Wilson over half-a-century ago married Margaret Bryson, sister of the late Robert Bryson and Mrs James Baird, of this town and of the late Hon George Bryson of Fort Coulonge. Mr and Mrs Wilson had the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding about twelve years ago, but Mrs Wilson predeceased him about two years ago. To them were born four children, one of whom died in infancy. Maggie, the second eldest, who married Geo Newman, died about 21 years ago, Mary lives in their village home, to which the deceased retired about 12 years ago, and their only son, James, lives on the homestead. Mr Wilson was a man who took an active interest in the public affairs of the county. For more than twenty-five years he was a director of the N.L.A.S., was first vice-president for many years and served as president for a couple of years. He also held an honourable position in the municipal affairs of the county and township. He was township councillor for seven years and deputy reeve several times. He was reeve at the time when the reeves formed the county council. In 1890 he was census commissioner. In religion he was a Presbyterian, a member of St Andrew's church Appleton, and for many years, a manager and treasurer. In politics he was a Conservative and a great admirer of Sir John A. McDonald. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. The pallbearers were Messrs R.W. Fumerton, Wm Paul, John Kirkwood, D. Dowling, Wm Garvin and John Stewart. Interment took place in the 8th line Ramsay cemetery. Mr Wilson was a stalwart gentleman of the old school, reared amidst the hardship of pioneer life. In day when characters were formed as strong as the hard ground from whence they drew their sustenance and more rugged than the lofty forest whose crashing fall betokened the advance of civilization. His actions all through life have been tempered with the straightforward honesty and justice of his father's time, which is unfortunately, rapidly becoming all too rare in our too greatly enlightened age. There passes away a man who will be greatly missed for he was greatly admired.

Andrew married Margaret Bryson in 1843. Mrs D. Shaw

As sleep to tired eyes, death came to Margaret Robina Baird, beloved wife of Mr Daniel Shaw, on Monday of this week. For some years the inevitable outcome of her malady, paralysis, had been apparent, but with the calm confidence of one who enters on a strange journey after long preparation, she patiently awaited the final summons. The assembling of friends to her side in the last hours is a silent tribute to the wonderful power of the kindly heart to make and hold friendships. Mrs Shaw was possessed of one of those rare temperaments which spends themselves in the service of others. "This women was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did."

The late Mrs Shaw was a daughter of the late Jas Baird and was born near Appleton fifty-three years ago. About twenty-five years ago after her father's death, with her mother she moved to Almonte and has since resided here. Her mother passed away about four years ago. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Jas B. and Robt of Pilot Mound, and one sister, Mrs James M. Cameron of Winnipeg. During her residence in Almonte Mrs Shaw had accumulated a large fund of affection from all those with whom she came in contact in her quiet, kindly way. She was a faithful member of St Andrew;s church. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon, interment being made in the eighth line cemetery.

Appleton has lost another old resident in the person of Mr. Andrew Wilson, who passed away on Wednesday morning, 6th inst., from the results of a paralytic stroke from which he suffered a few weeks ago. He was a son of the late Wm. Wilson, and was born at Summer Hill, on February 27th, 1844, and was in his 69th year when he passed away. He learned the trade of architect and builder under his father, and was a workman who had no cause to be ashamed of his work. He worked for some years at Huntingdon, and while there he was married to Miss Isabella J . Chalmers, who is still living. To them seven children were born, five daughters and two sons, Laramie (Mrs. W. J. Bredge), Augusta (Mrs. Milo Steele), Edythe, Gladys and Howard are all in Saskatchewan, Bella is at Seattle and Barclay at Detroit, Mich. The late Mr. Wilson, was a life-long Presbyterian, and was a member of that, church. He was a charter member of the Independent Order of Foresters, and for many years held the responsible office of secretary and treasurer. Among the floral evidences of respect and esteem were a wreath from his fellow-members of the I.O.F., sprays from Mrs. Wm. Garvin, Mr. and Mrs. John Turner, and Mr and Mrs. J. A. Turner. The funeral takes place this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o clock from his late residence to the Eighth Line cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. John Turner Jas. Turner, P. C. Arthur, Jas. Wilson, S. Dulmage and S. J. Allen.

The George Bell Encampment of the Oddfellows in Ottawa was named after him. Mr. Bell was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bell, of Carleton Place. He is survived by four nieces, Mrs. A. E. Miss Mary Wilson
Miss Mary C. Wilson, one of Appleton's best known ladies, passed away at her home in that village Tuesday morning of acute indigestion, after an illness of only a few days. The deceased was born there, being a daughter of the late Andrew Wilson, and the last surviving member of her family. She was a lady who was always active in social and church work and was widely known and esteemed, and her sudden demise is a surprise to her many friends and deeply lamented. ? The funeral of the late Miss Mary C. Wilson, one of the best known citizens, whose death was reported last week, took place on Thursday last, and was largely attended. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev A.D. Fraser, interment being made in the Eighth Line cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs Wm Baird and T.C. Arthur, Carleton Place; R.W. Fumerton, John Stewart, James Syme and Neil Munroe. Among those present from a distance were Mrs Jas Wilson, Misses Christina, Margaret and Janet Wilson, and Mr and Mrs Jas Newman, of Ottawa; Mr and Mrs P. McCallum, Mrs (Dr) Patterson and Mr W. Mr James Wilson Killed
Not only Appleton district but the surrounding community in a wide circle was appalled on Wednesday when the intelligence passed from one person to another, that James Wilson had been killed. How the accident happened is not known for certain, but it is supposed he was unhitching his team in the barn about noon and that one of the horses had kicked him, and when found one side of his head was crushed in. Mrs Wilson heard an unusual noise in the barn, and upon going out to ascertain the cause she found her husband unconscious, and in a short time he passed away. The late Mr Wilson was a son of the late Andrew Wilson, sr., and was about 56 years of age. He was married about 22 years ago to Miss Mary Snedden, daughter of the late James Snedden, and to them five children were born. Of these Christina is teaching at Rosetta, Maggie is bookkeeper in Mr J.A. McGregor's store at Appleton, Bryson and Janet are attending the high school at Carleton Place, and John, the youngest, is at home. Mrs Wilson is still living, as is also a sister of the deceased, Miss Mary Wilson, at Appleton. The late Mr Wilson was a man of a quiet and retiring disposition, but was highly respected by all who knew him ? those knowing him best holding him in highest esteem. He was a good neighbour, a staunch friend and a man of sterling probity and uprightness in all his dealings. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and was a staunch Liberal in politics. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from his late home to the Presbyterian cemetery on the eighth line of Ramsay. The sad occurrence has called forth sincere and heartfelt sympathy for the family and friends so sorely bereaved.

William Baird Dies In Carleton Place
CARLETON PLACE, Ont., May 19 --(Special)--
William Baird, esteemed resident of Carleton Place for more than 50 years, died suddenly in Toronto last night. He had motored to that city on Sunday with his son, Dr. Forbes Baird, who was to attend a dental convention there this week. He was born in Appleton, 77 years ago, and came to Carleton Place in 1885 where he went into business with Robert Riddell. On April 13, 1887, he was married in Toronto to Miss Jean McIntosh, who, with one son, survives. Also surviving are one brother, Robert M., and one sister, Catherine Baird, both of Appleton. The funeral will be held on Saturday from his residence on McLaren street to Pine Grove cemetery.
