"I am writing about Robert Brown Millar who married Elizabeth Granny Smith in 1869 - Perth, Ontario. Robert and Elizabeth raised my ggrandmother Elizabeth Miller, her sister Hannah and their brother Alexander. The 3 siblings are listed in the 1871 census for Palmerston and South Canonto, Ontario as living with Robert and Elizabeth. A descendant has advised that they did live with their grandparents. I'm assuming that would have been Robert. ?i?[I think it may also be first wife Janet's parents as a possibility as well : C McFadden][ It could be Elizabeth's parents, John Smith and Janet Marshall: DED] ?/i?I can only find him listed in one other census for 1861 in North Gower, Carleton, Ontario. ?b?Elizabeth Smith Miller: Title: The Lanark Era, BDM, Author Peter E Anderson, Obituary:

?/b?In many respects, Mrs. Miller was one of the most remarkable women in the County of Lanark. Possessed of wonderful energy all through life, hers was a career of exceeding activity. In a region where all was virgin forest, and no person save a lone Indian was near, she with her husband erected a home of logs, where they resided for many years the only white people in that neighbourhood. Then the lumberman came with his axes and men, the mighty giants of the forest were felled and removed and Nature's primitive scenes gave place to pastoral landscapes and peaceful vistas. Mrs. Miller outlived this process of change, the woodman's entrance and exit, the passing of the redman, the bleat of the lamb for the howl of the wolf, the modern dwelling for the scoop-roof shanty, the varnished buggy for the crude jumper, the silks for the homely drugget and having passed through it all, she entered the better land. Mrs. Miller came of good Scotch parents. He maiden name was Elizabeth Smith. Born the 5th Sept, 1818 at Paisley... with her parents she came to Canada in 1821 and settled in the Township of North Sherbrooke. In 1842 Elizabeth was married to Mr. James Miller. The young couple began matrimonial life in North Sherbrooke and after several moves they settled in the township of Palmerston, on a lot known as the Indian lot. That was in 1848 and they were the furthest settlers west of the Mississippi River for a period of 12 years. The opening up of the Snow Road brought in a lot of settlers who took up land around the Miller homestead. In 1857 the terrible disaster known as the Crotch Lake catastrophe shocked the whole countryside. A whole gang of men were swept away while driving by the river by breaking of the dam. Their bodies were not recovered for a long time afterwards and Mr. Miller used to carry mail to the men searching for the bodies of the unfortunate rivermen. It was on one of these trips that Mr. Miller lost his life.He was drowned near Crotch Lake. Mrs. Miller has living 43 grandchildren, 77 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. To her children and many of her grandchildren Mrs. Miller proved a very efficient physician, administering to their physical ailments with skill born the years of observation and experience. Indeed, for many years when no doctor was in the neighbourhood and Lanark was the nearest point that boasted a man of medicine, Mrs. Miller attended the sick and lost many a night's sleep in doing what she considered a duty. She was a Presbyterian. When a young girl, McDonald's Corners was the nearest place where public worship was held. The boys and girls walked there barefooted, carrying their boots, and when near the church put them on. This was done to save the boots, for in those days frugality and economy were the very essence of living.

In 1861 census, Elizabeth was in Palmerston married to Ewen McDonald and living with her family. She married Robert Brown Millar in 1869 and on 1871 census is with Robert and has 3 additional Miller children preceding marriage date - likely from his first marriage (both were "W" at time of marriage) who she ended up raising after Robert died. On 1881 census she is married to Philip James Shevelin. After his death she remained a widow and appeared as Elizabeth Shevelin W in 1891 and as Elizabeth Millar W in 1901. All children were born to Elizabeth and James, no more children were born to Elizabeth by her other 3 husbands.
Elizabeth donated the property for the Snow Road Presbyterian Church that was built in 1885 (from the book "The First One Hundred Years, Snow Road Presbyterian Church 1885-1985", by Max Millar, Hilda Geddes and Don St. Pierre).

"The Millars can trace back six generations when the family first moved in 1821 into what is now North Sherbrooke Township.
Max's great grandmother moved to Snow Road about 1848 and for many years she and husband James were the only white settlers north of the Mississippi.
She opened her home as a 'stopping place' for travelers along Snow Road, and the energetic woman served the community as physician, midwife, lawyer and mailman." (Max is Thomas Maxwell Millar, great grandsonof James and Elizabeth)

    Died:
    Mr James Miller
The life of Mr James Millar covered the greater part of a century, he being in his ninety-third year at the time of his death. There are very few people of his generation living today. Mr. Millar was born at Snow Road, April 11th, 1848, and spent the greater part of his life in that vicinity. For many years he was engaged in the timber industry and held responsible positions with the different companies operating in the district. These positions he filled with marked ability and efficiency.

On November 10, 1871, he was married to Isabelle Duncan, who predeceased him several years ago. To this pair were born five sons and a daughter, who were as follows: James, John, Thomas, William, Fleetwood, and Bella. Of this number Thomas of Snow Road, William of Kingston and Mrs. Bella McNeill of Detroit survive.

For many lyears Mr. Millar was an elder in the Presbyterian church of Snow Road and took an active part in the work of that organization. He was superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years. He had a good memory and his memory was stored with the happenings of earlier days. Of these events he could discourse interestingly and at length. In his latter years Mr. Millar enjoyed visiting among his friends of whom he had not a few. Many happy hours were thus spent discussing experiences of the past. Not all of his time during his last years was spent in that way. He was an industrious person and even when he was up in his eighties he put in regular hours at the trade of carpentering. Some of his handywowrk may be seen by looking at the cottages which line the shore of Dalhousie Lake at Mr. Lindsay Duncan's.

Nearly all the last year of his life was spent at the home of his son Thomas where the time passed pleasantly and where he tried to be of service as long as he lived. The end of his long life came peacefully, his last illness being neither long nor severe. Although he had spent some days in bed he was on his feet even to the last day of his life. He passed away suddenly, and thus colsed a long and useful life. A very large number of friends and relations came together at the funeral Sunday afternoon, August 18th, to pay their last tribute of respect to one whom they had known and esteemed many years.

The funeral was conducted by the minister of the church in which Mr. Millar was an elder, and his body was laid to rest in Crawford's cemetery. The pallbeareres were as follows: Lindsay Duncan, James Duncan, Robert Duncan, John Geddes, KJack Roberts and James? Millar.

The floral tributes were from the following: T.H. Millar and family, W.R. Millar and family, W.J. McNeill and family, Mrs. Annie Millar and family, Mr and Mrs John Millar, Mr and Mrs Lindsay Duncan, Mr and Mrs Jack Roberts, Mr and Mrs Thomas Ixatt, Mr and Mrs Robert Duncan, the Session of Snow Road church, and the Snow Road Women's Institute.

James married Isabella Duncan on 10 Nov 1871 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lanark Village, Ontario, Canada. Isabella (daughter of James B. Duncan and Jane Purdon) was born on 25 Mar 1853; died on 27 Apr 1921; was buried in Crawford Cemetery, Elphin, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

(Research):About 1900, Elizabeth Millar's family is in North Dakota. Married at Buckshot. Her parents are listed as John Miller and Janet Miller.

Lanark Era - June 5,1918 - Snow Road, Thurs. May 30th, Mrs. Hugh McKinnon, aged 63 years. Born at Snow Road, the daughter of the late James Miller, Elizabeth Miller, had a family of ten children; Mrs. Geo. Hatt, of Airdrie, Alta. died about 9 years ago; Mrs. Wm. Richards, of Calgary; Mrs. John Lee, Tofield, Alta.; Mrs. Percy Johnston, Fort Pitt, Sask; Mrs. Harry Glover, DeWinton, Alta.; Florence and Edith , at home; Hughie, and James, at Vulcan, Alta.; and Charles, at Fallbrook. She is also survived by three brothers; William Miller, at North Battleford; James, and Thomas, at Snow Road.

My Mother was told by a distant aunt that Elizabeth, Hannah, and Alexander's parents were John and Janet Miller.
You will note that Hannah lists her parents as John Johnston and Janet Miller. Elizabeth lists them as John and Janet Miller. We were told that Janet re-married - fellow's name was Johnston and Hannah's marriage record seems to confirm this. So their Father John Miller may have died between 1866 (Alexander's birthdate) and 1871 when they appeared in the 1871 census with Robert Brown Millar and Elizabeth Smith. Can find no record for John and Janet's marriage or John Johnston and Janet Miller's marriage.

    From Lanark Era:
Died in Winnipeg on Friday April 5, 1918, Mrs. James Smith age 44 years, formerly of Elphin.
Her son Willie is in France. Burial Sandford Cemetery Manitoba.

In May 2005, I visited Sandford Cemetery to locate James Smith and Janet McVeigh's grave. Spoke to the Administrator of the cemetery and there were three James Smith's buried in Sanford all without headstones and the cemetery had been originally by the river and the river kept flooding every year and the local municipality decided to move the cemetery to higher ground so older burials don't match new location.

Janet married James Smith in 1891. James (son of William Smith and Margaret Brownlee) was born on 16 Nov 1866 in Elphin, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Sanford Cemetery, Sanford, Whitehorse Plains Census Division, Manitoba, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Obituary Ada Rowe
The family of Ada Rowe announces with sorrow her death at Anson General Hospital Wednesday, September 23, 1992.
    She was 89 years old.
Mrs. Rowe was the beloved wife of Charles and the mother of one son Eldon, Iroquois Falls and two daughters, Helen Poole, Fitzroy Harbour, Ontario and Norma (Robert) Elliott, Grand Valley, Ontario.
She is survived by one brother, Gerald, Belleville, Ontario.
Mrs. Rowe is also survived by nine grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held, September 26, at 11 am at the chapel at N. Malette Funeral Home. Reverend Murray Binsted officiated at the service.
    Interment was at Abitibi Cemetery.

Funeral, Ada Rowe, 26 Sep 1992.
Ada was one of those persons I always enjoyed talking with when I visited at the Manor. she was a cheery individual who found delight in conversation.
Ada enjoyed living and had a long life but she decided two years ago that when her life was drawing to a close that she did not want any heroic efforts to prolong her living and so she made a living will which she gave to her family and to me. And so that life came to its conclusion which had its beginning almost 90 years ago.
Ada was born in Campbellford, Ontario in November of 1902, the youngest of 7 children in the family of Isabel Miller and John MacDonald. Ada spent her early years there and then moved to Byng Inlet on Georgian Bay, where her father worked for a sawmill.
The MacDonalds came to Onegon, near Porquis when Ada was 12 and like many people of the district lost everything in the 1916 fire except a cow and her calf and the windup key for a clock. They survived by standing in the local creek and pouring water on one another and their animals. Ada and her mother spent that winter in toronto and the next year returned to the farm.
After completing her schooling Ada remained at home and cared for her mother, who was in poor health.
In 1924, at the Porquis Church, Ada married Charles Rowe. Originally from the Ottawa Valley, Charles was on his way west for the prairie harvest when he stopped at Porquis. He was told about work with the O.N.R. in Iroquois Falls. he got a job in the freight office and after their marriage the Rowes remained in the community.
Ada and Charles had three children -- Helen, Norma and Eldon.
Ada's activities outside of home were primarily with the life of the local United Church. She spent many years as organist at Porquis United Church and Trinity United her in the Falls as well as singing in the choir. She was also a member of the women's group.
Ada was a very determined and proud lady, well-loved by her family, especially her grandchildren. She taught her granddaughters to be ladies and treated all her grandchildren equally.
She was predeceased by Charles, her four sisters and one brother. Her brother, Gerald of Belleville, survives.
Ada leaves to mourn her death her daughters and son, their families -- 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Ada married Charles Henry Rowe on 1 Aug 1925 in Cochrane, Cochrane District, Ontario, Canada. Charles (son of Frank Rowe and Lucy Charlotte Basken) was born on 28 Jan 1901 in Dunrobin, Torbolton Twp, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; died in 1978. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
