    Stuart A. Anderson, 85, a lifelong educator and author of numerous educational publications, died of pneumonia on Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at the Desert Cove Nursing Home in Chandler, Ariz.
    He began his career in education in the Milwaukee Public School System after receiving his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He then earned his M.Ed. from Marquette University and his Ph.D. from the University a Wisconsin-Madison.
    From there he went to teach at UW-Stout and the University of Chicago. He served from 1958-63 as assistant superintendent in Niles Township, and from 1964-69 a superintendent in Riverside Brookfield Township.
    In 1970, he became professor of administration at Sangamon State University in Springfield Ill., where he retired in 1983 but then served as professor emeritus until he moved to Sun Lakes, Ariz., in 1994.
    Foreign assignments included positions with the Institute of Inter-American Affairs in Lima Peru, 1952-54, and UNESCO in Manila, Philippines, 1956-57.
    An author of more than 50 articles in professional journals he was a member of a permanent list of book reviewers for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a member of many professional organizations, including honorary life memberships in both the Illinois Association of School Boards and the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers.
    Among the awards Dr. Anderson received was professor administration emeritus from Sangamon State University and distinguished alumni award from UW-Stout. He is listed in Who's Who in the Midwest, 20th Edition, 1986-87.
    His wife of nearly 50 years, Helen Robinson, died in 1994. His second wife, Virginia, Metcalf, died in 1998.
    Survivors include two children, David Anderson of Bradenton, Fla., and Judith Ratcliff of Bethesda, Md.; a half-sister, Karen Olson of Greendale; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.
