    Died:
    Ruth Williams Couper died in September of 1960 in Binghamton General Hospital after a short illness. She was a member of the Tuscarora Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Her funeral service will be at the Prentice Funeral Home in Binghamton, NY. She was born in 1875 in Kirkland, NY.

    Survived by her Son: Edgar Williams Couper; Daughter: Mary Williams Couper both of Binghamton, NY; Grandchildren; Richard Watrous Couper and Katharine Couper Watrous both of Binghamton, NY. Also survived by several Great-Grandchildren.
    Predeceased by Husband: Walter Thomas Couper; Son: Frederic Maxwell Couper; Daughter: Rachel Williams Couper.

    She faced many challenges, (including the loss of two of her children), but did so with grace and dignity. Beloved by family and friends.

    Burial in the family plot in Chenango Valley Cemetery in Binghamton, NY following her funeral service.

    Ruth married Walter Thomas Couper in 1897. Walter (son of Joseph P.     Edgar was a leading community member and philanthropist. Board member, trustee, and officer of many Binghamton and New York State companies, banks, utilities, and organizations. Driving force behind the formation of the New York State University System.

    Funeral service January 19 with interment to follow in the Couper family plot in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, NY. Allen Memorial Home in charge of arrangements.

    Edgar married Esther Hayes Watrous in 1921.     Miss Rachel Williams Couper died in 1953 in Binghamton, NY, age 48. She was born in 1904 in upstate New York.

    Survived by her Mother: Ruth Williams Couper; Brother: Edgar Williams Couper; Sister: Mary Williams Couper all of Binghamton, NY. Also survived by many Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

    Beloved by family and friends. She faced challenges early in life and faced them with grace and dignity while keeping love in her heart. A funeral service was held in the Prentice Funeral Home.

    Died:
    Frederic Maxwell Couper died in 1934 in Binghamton, NY, age 24 after a three year illness. He was the son of Mrs. Walter T. Couper and was widely known in scholastic and athletic circles. His death ocurred at his home Thursday afternoon.

    Known to friends as "Ricky", Mr. Couper contracted a rare bone disease about three years ago, believed to have resulted from injuries suffered while playing football for Binghamton Central High School and Clarkson Institue of Technology.

    His case attracted wide attention among the nation's leading surgeons. His condition became worse despite treatment by specialists at Memorial Hospital in New York City. The first symptoms of the disease were noted in 1931. (It would be after his death when it was realized he had metastasized bone cancer.)

    Mr. Couper attended Alexander Hamilton school and was a graduate from Central High School in 1929. While in high school he was prominent in athletics , winning his varsity football letters in 1926-27-28. He was a member of the track team for three years and in 1927 won the state sectional championship in the mile run in Ithaca.

    His prominence in athletics continued at Clarkson Tech, which he entered in September, 1929. He was president of the freshman class and was elected president of the junior class when he was forced to leave college because of illness. In his sophomore year he was awarded the Clarkson Sportsmanship medal, one of the highest honors the college can bestow.

    At Clarkson, he was on the freshman football team and later given a place on the on the varsity team. He was sports editor of the Intergrator student publication of Clarkson Tech and was a member of Lamba Iota Fraternity.

    He is survived by his mother Ruth Delia Williams Couper, his brother Edgar Williams Couper and two sisters, Rachael Williams and Mary Williams Couper. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 4PM at Cornell-Dibble Funeral Home. Interment to follow in Couper plot in the Chenango Valley Cemetery, Binghamton, NY.

    Predeceased by parents: Walter Thomas Couper and Ruth Delia Williams Couper.; brothers: Edgar Williams Couper and Frederic Maxwell Couper; sister: Rachel Couper; nephew: Richard Watrous Couper; great-nephews: Barrett Williams Couper, and Charles Wilson Kochersberger.

    She was valedictorian of the class of 1930 at Binghamton Central High School and graduated from Elmira College. She missed her college commencement because of the sudden death of her father that weekend.

    She first became a secretary in the law firm of Couper, Terry and Turnbull and later on was a trust officer at City National Bank which later became First City National Bank. She was a member of Shakespeare Club and was a former member of the Junior League where she was awarded the Watrous Bowl.

    Survivors: niece: K. Watrous; great nieces and nephews: Fred, Tom, and Margaret Couper; Janet, Peter, Eleanor, and Carolyn Watrous.
    Cremation with direct interment in the Couper family plot in Chenango Valley Cemetery in Binghamton, NY. The Allen Memorial Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

    Katharine Couper Watrous, 81, died March 20, 2007 in Binghamton, NY. She was born on November 13, 1926, in Binghamton.

    Predeceased by husband, Joseph B. Watrous, Jr., MD and parents Edgar Williams Couper and Esther Watrous Couper and brother, Richard Watrous Couper.
    Survived by children: Janet Couper Watrous Kochersberger, Peter Shaffer Watrous, Elly Williams Watrous Summers and Carolyn Cory Watrous.
    Also five grandchildren.

    Considered by some to be somewhat philanthropic to her community. Considered by others to be unloving and cruel--especially to several of her children. She suffered in her later years from numerous neurosis. Her "love tank", was never filled in childhood preventing her from having the ability to love unconditionally. It was a tragic ending.

    Cremated and scattered on her private estate. Allen Memorial Home in charge of arrangements.
