    Another of the older residents of our village, Mr. James H. Rodger, passed on to the spirit world last Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Finlay Ramsbottom. He had reached the age of 85 years and 3 months, and during his lifetime was seldom seriously ill, but for a few years his heart had caused him uneasiness and his sudden demise was due to this weakness when walking around the home. Mr. Rodger was married to Ellen Miller in the year, 1875, and to this union there was a family of five daughters and three sons, Jessie A., Mrs. Charles Ramsbottom, Lanark; Harry L., Maggie, Mrs. Finlay Ramsbottom, Ferguson's, Falls; William S. of Almonte; Nellie, Mrs. Welland McKay of Ramsay; James of Almonte; Edna, Mrs. Robert Woods of Arklan; Eva, Mrs. Wm. Rintoul. Galbraith. The large funeral services Sunday afternoon were conducted at the home of Mrs. Finlay Ramsbottom, thence to United church Middleville, by the pastors, Rev. Snelgrove and Rev. McLean of Lanark. The six grandsons who acted as pallbearers were: James and John Rodger, John Rintoul, Wilbert McKay, Lloyd Ramsbottom, Roy Rodger and four grand-daughters were flower bearers, Eleanor Rintoul, Mildred and Margaret Ramsbottom and Ella Rodger. Another nephew Mr. Geo. Rodger was requested to sing "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

    On Sunday evening, September 1, the Angel of Death who has been hovering over this community for some time past descended and laid his icy fingers on the heart strings of a worthy "Mother in Israel" in this place in the person of Mrs. David Somerville, releasing her spirit to its home in the upper fold. The deceased lady's maiden name was Agnes Rodger, a daughter of Henry Rodger and his wife Jessie Stead, who were among the early pioneers of this district and her birth took place on November 18, 1858, so that she had acquired to the span of man's allotted age. On November 3rd, she entered into a matrimonial partnership for life with David Somerville, and the young couple settled upon the farm, where they have lived ever since, and by their indomnitable industry and thrift, they have transformed it from a somewhat difficult place to cultivate, into one of the finest. homes in the locality. Unto them was given a family of two sons. Willie R. on the homestead, Harry of Toronto, and one daughter Nettie (Mrs. Herb Paul) of Lavant, all of whom survive and mourn the loss of a loving and devoted mother. The funeral service was held at her late residence and was conducted by her pastor. Rev. Robert Stocker, on Tuesday afternoon, and the high esteem in which she was held was manifested by the number who attended to contribute in this way their quota of respect to her memory and manner of life.

    William S. Rodger
    The death occurred suddenly on Monday, May 4th of Mr Wm S. Rodger of Almonte. Mr Rodger who was in his 83rd year was working in his garden when he suffered a severe heart attack. He had been a resident of Almonte for the past 35 years. Until his retirement about five years ago, he served as a rural mail carrier. Mr Rodger was born at Middleville, the son of the late Mr and Mrs James H. Rodger. Of a family of 8, two sisters survive, Eva, Mrs Wm Rintoul of Drummond and Edna, Mrs Robert Woods of Ashton. Mr Rodger was twice married. His first wife, Caroline Somerville, died in 1935. His second wife, Susan Parker died in 1950. He is survived by one daughter, Ethel, Mrs Harry Metcalfe of Almonte; a step-daughter, Lorna, Mrs Desse Brown on Montreal and three grand-children, Rae Metcalfe of Ottawa, Bob and Cindy Metcalfe of Almonte. The funeral was held on Wednesday from the Comba Funeral Home with interment in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The Reverend D. Leslie Elder conducted the service. The pallbearers were: Mr Jas McDonald of Galt; Mr Joe Melanson, Mr Ed Winslow-Spragge, Mr Dolphie Elliott of Almonte and two nephews, Mr Jas Rodger of Lanark and Mr Earl Manson of Almonte

    Mr Jas. M. Rodger
    The funeral service was held at the Comba Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon, March 1st, at one p.m., of James Miller Rodger who died at his residence, Country Street, on Sunday, Feb 27th, in his 69th year. Mr Rodger had been in ill health for the past two years. James Miller Rodger was born at Middleville in 1886, a son of the late James Rodger and his wife, Ellen Miller. He was married 47 years ago to the former Miss Harriett McKay of Galbraith who survives together with two sons and two daughters, namely: Thomas Mckay (Mac) and Roy of Almonte; Ella (Mrs Wm Andrews) and (Annie) Mrs David Andrews both of Almonte. There is also a brother, William of Almonte; three sisters, Jessie, Mrs Chas Ramsbottom of Smiths Falls; Eva, Mrs Wm Rintoul of Innisville; Edna, Mrs Wm Woods of Lanark, and nine grandchildren. Mr Rodger was a farmer nearly all his life. First, as a young man he farmed in the Galbraith section and later on the 9th line of Ramsay Township where Mr John Brydges now lives and until he retired eleven years ago, on the farm occupied by his son, Roy, on the 9th line. The Rev Jas M. Ritchie of Almonte Presbyterian Church officiated and the remains were placed in the Auld Kirk Cemetery vault. The pallbearers were Messrs W.A. Metcalfe, Jas Metcalfe, John R. Reid, Ernest Robertson, Lloyd Watson and Lester Jamieson. Among the beautiful floral tributes were wreaths from Metcalfe's Dairy; M.P. Coderre and Metcalfe's Construction.

    This is Margaret Baird who lived on Herron Mills Road and also had a house in Lanark Village. She donated the and for the Lanark Museum and the Baird Trail. Margaret made her clothes from flour and sugar bags. She and her sister Nettie ate "organic" when every one else was pouring chemicals o n their gardents. They spent time on theor acreage digging weeds till they were so bent over you couldn't see who was driving the truck. My grandfather Harry Stead was the first one there when Nettie died in the porch. They always seemed to be very old but I am sure they weren't.

    Concur. She had a sister Nettie with whom she shared a home. I believe she moved from Toronto to Herron Mills Road in the mid 50s but had roots somewhere in Lanark County. Nettie died in the early to mid 60s and sometime after that Margaret had a house built in Lanark village.
    I (and Karen Ennis who commented above) grew up on Herron Mills roaad; maiden name Stead. Margaret walked to our farm to buy milk and eggs. A lovely interesting lady, a bit before her time in many ways.

    PIONEER FAMILY SETTLES PROPERTY

    The property was first settled by a pioneer family in 1837 and supported basic food crops and livestock, with the forest providing lumber, fuel and maple syrup. The sandy soil was only marginal for agriculture, however, and the lowlands flooded often due to beaver dams. The land was left idle in the 1920s. In 1963, Margaret Baird sold the 36-hectare parcel to the county and a red pine plantation was planted as part of a conservation program.

    LCMTC's mandate is to design, develop, manage and promote motorized and non-motorized trails on county-owned property. Donations and in-kind support help the organization to make improvements on the Baird Trail and other trails in community forests.

    There are various ways to assist. Donors can purchase a bench on the Baird Trail (or Tay River Pathway in Perth) for $1,500 and provide wording for an associated commemorative plaque.

    Donations of any amount can be made for general trail development across the county. The county's public works department administers the donations on behalf of the trails corporation and tax receipts are issued for donations of $20 or more.

    To get to the Baird Trail, from Lanark take Hwy. 511 north for 4 km to Herron Mills Road (County Road 8).

    Turn right and travel east for 2 km to the intersection at Rodger Road. The Baird property entrance is on the left, 250 metres east of the Rodger Road intersection. From Middleville, take County Road 8 south for 5 km. The entrance is 500 metres west of the Mitchell Road intersection.

    The trail leaves from the parking lot. Visitors can also find pit toilets and picnic tables onsite.

    Mr. John T. Somerville
    On Sunday last the final respects of the neighbourhood were paid to our well respected citizen in the person of the late John T. Somerville, who was the eldest son of John Somerville and Catharine Ballantyne. John T., who lived the most of his life in this locality except for some time spent in lumber camps and in the early manhood years in railway construction, was Warden for a term. In politics he was a staunch Liberal and in religion an attendant of the former Congregational Church and afterward the United Church. In 1890 he was married to Elizabeth Ann Rodger who predeceased him in 1937. To them was born a family of six children: Jennie (Mrs. David McFarlane of Walton), Arthur of Toronto, W.R. of Perth, Eric of Lanark. Ida of Lyons, Helen (Mrs. Alva Rintoul) of Ramsay, The funeral service was held June 28 in the United Church. The Rev. S.. B. Smith conducted the service in the church and at the graveside, then the Masonic brethren conducted their funeral service. The casket was borne by six members of the order, Harry Mather, Robt. Stewart, Lionel Barr, Austin Manson, Evan G. McIlraith and Geo. B. Taylor. Many floral tributes decorated the graveside. Those of the family circle of deceased living are: Nellie; Mrs. Ed. Lynch; Rachel (Mrs. Thos. Manson) of the village; Kate, Mrs. Wm, Penman of Gilbert Plains; Sarah, Mrs. Bresnee of Moose Jaw; James of Montreal and Olive of Winnipeg.

Dear mother of Margaret McIntrye and Irene Mitchell, both of Almonte. Predeceased by two sons Harvey and Earl McIntyre. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. In Her 95th Year. Friends called at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte on Monday. Funeral Service was held in the Funeral Home on Tuesday. Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte.

    Helen Rintoul
    Former Ramsay township resident Helen Elizabeth Rintoul died Feb 8 at Fairview Manor in Almonte at the age of 81. She had been ill for a year. Mrs Rintoul was the daughter of the late John T. Somerville and Elizabeth Ann Rodger. She was born on March 20, 1903 in Middleville. She received her education at Middleville public, Lanark high and Ottawa normal schools. On Sept 1, 1927 she married the late George Alva Rintoul in Middleville. She enjoyed a teaching career at Herron's Mill and Scotch Line public schools and was a homemaker at the family farm in Ramsay township near Carleton Place. Mrs Rintoul is survived by sons, Kelvin, William and Donald of Carleton Place, Laurie of Almonte, Archie of Bracebridge and Leslie of Oakville as well as daughters Elsie (Mrs William McKnight) of Lower Millstream, NB and Ruth of Dartmouth, NS. Seven Rintoul granddaughters also survive her. They are Margaret, Leslie Ann and Barbara Lee of Carleton Place, Wendy of Oakville, Susan of Bracebridge, Cynthia of Pakenham and Brenda McKnight of Ottawa A sister, Ida (Mrs S. Gavitt) of Syracuse, New York is also left to mourn. Mrs Rintoul was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, formerly of Vancouver; Rodger of Perth and Eric of Lanark and one sister, Jennie (Mrs D. MacFarlane) of Almonte. A Carleton Place area resident for 57 years, Mrs Rintoul was a life member of the Rocky Ridge Women's Institute. She belonged to the Zion Memorial United Church Sunshine Unit 1 and the church quilter's club. Rev Wesley Mitchell conducted the funeral at the Alan Barker Funeral Home in Carleton Place, Feb 10, 1985. Burial will take place at the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.

    In the Helen Elizabeth Rintoul obituary carried on page 17 of the Feb 20 issue, it should have been noted that the seven Rintoul granddaughters listed were pallbearers. A total of 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren survive.
