    ANDREW HOOD DIES TODAY

Andrew Hood, aged 87 years, died at six forty-five this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Halliday. Mr. Hood was formerly of Lanark, Ontario, but has been in this country for a good many years and for the past four years, with Mrs. Hood, has been making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Halliday at 515 Sixth Street.

Funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow afternoon at two-thirty, Rev. Sam M. Kelly officiating, and the body will be shipped to Harrison, Ontario for internment.

Mr. Hood is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Hood, and six children: Mrs. J. Halliday, Devils Lake; R. G. Hood, Medicine Hat, Alberta; J. S. Hood, Lengby, Minn; Stewart Hood, Toronto, Ontario; and Martha and Margaret Hood of Jamestown, ND. Also, a nephew, R. S. McMorran of Lawton, who lived at the Hood home from childhood.

Mrs. Hood with four of the children and Mr. McMorran were with him at death, and R. G. Hood is on his way to Devils Lake. Mr. Stewart Hood will meet the body at Harrison, Ontario.

Andrew Hood was born in Dalhousie Township (now called Lanark Highlands), Lanark County, Ontario on November 15, 1837 to William Hood and Martha Park. Andrew was the seventh child of ten. Andrew's older brother, William, eventually left their childhood home, stopping (per William Jr.'s diary) at Simcoe County to visit his grandfather James Hood, and then his older sister Elizabeth Jones (Hood) Ferguson at Hay Township, Huron County, before settling in Howick Township, Huron County. All of William's brothers eventually traveled to Howick Township, but most moved on. Andrew must have liked what he saw, because he farmed in that area for many decades. The current address of where the farm was located is: 46358 Salem Road, Howick Township (near Clifford). The old homestead is no longer there, and a new house replaces it, but the land can be viewed and there is an old maple sugar shack on the property. This land would have been all virgin forests/bush with Andrew first bought it. The two brothers had farms that were about 2 1/2 miles from each other. Andrew married Ann Scott on January 5, 1866 at Willow Creek Farm. Ann's parents had come from Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Andrew's farm was near the border of Minto Township, Wellington County, where Ann's parents had a farm. Andrew and Ann had seven children, plus helped raise two children whose mother (Louisa Scott McMorran who was Ann's older sister) had died unexpectedly.

A nephew of Ann Scott Hood, Robert "Rob" Scott McMorran, was one of the chidlren raised by the Hood family. Robert's mother, Louisa (Ann's sister), died before her time, when Robert was around 13 months old, and after that, he lived with the Andrew Hood family. Robert was born on March 25, 1874 at Hespler, Ontario. He died Nov. 17, 1953 in Lawton, ND. Robert is buried at Inkster Cemetery. One of Rob's sisters was also raised in the Andrew Hood family, but she married and stayed in Ontario.

On the 1871 Canadian Census, Andrew is listed as living in Huron County, Howick Twp. Andrew is age 33 and his wife Ann is 24. Their children are William (age 4), Ann (age 2), and John (4 months born Dec. 1870). Andrew was the owner of 109 acres of land on Concession 13, Lot 33 of Howick Township. The land produced 160 bushels of Spring Wheat, 60 bushels of barley, 240 bushels oats, 100 b. peas, 80 b. potatoes, 400 b. turnips, and 10 tons of hay. There were 2 oxen, 2 milk cows, 2 beef cattle, 10 sheep, 1 swine, 1ith 1 cow, 2 sheep and 5 swine butchered. They made 50 lbs. of butter from the cow's milk, and 24 lbs. of wool from the sheep.

On the 1900 U.S. census, Cass County, Kinyon Twp, it lists their son John Hood as having come to the U.S. in 1896. He is living with his sister Annie, his brother-in-law Jake, and his brother George. His sister Martha Park is living next door. Per that census, everyone else in the group came to the U.S. in 1899. They must have liked what they saw in North Dakota, sending back word to their parents in Canada. In 1902, when Andrew and Ann's youngest daughter Margaret Janet was sixteen, the rest of the family left Canada and moved to Devil's Lake, Ramsey Couty, North Dakota, where they ran a boarding house for about one year. After that, the couple relocated to Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota. Andrew and Ann lived the rest of their lives in North Dakota, but are buried per their request, at Harriston Cemetery, Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario.

Andrew married Ann Scott in 1865. Ann (daughter of William Scott and Ann Cairns) was born on 25 Nov 1846 in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland; died on 3 Jun 1927 in Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota, United States; was buried in Harriston Cemetery, Harriston, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. PAISLEY ADVOCATE dtd Sep. 12, 1889

Died at Harriston on the 6th instant Penelope Hood, eldest daughter of Mr. John [should read James] Hood of Brant, near Paisley and wife of Mr. Jacob Halliday of Harriston in [the] 27th year of her age. Mrs. Halliday was a young woman of exemplary character and highly respected for her many excellent qualities. The esteem in which she was held by all her acquaintances was manifested by the large concource of people that attended her funeral service viz. Rev. Messrs. Camerons, Harriston; Young, Clifford; and Gillies of Paisley. She walked with God and her end was peace. Her remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery of Harriston, there to repose until the day breaks and the shadows flee away. The morning of the resurrection will see her redeemed from death resurrected from the grave, her mouldered remains gathered from their sleeping dusk clothed in robes of immortal life. Her bereaved husband and the family to which she belonged have the sympathy of the community. "Blessed are the dead which in the Lord from henceforth yea saith the spirit that they may rest from their labours and their work do follow them."

Public records list the baby of Penalope and Jacob Halliday as a still born male, born September 05, 1889.

    Died:
    Sad Fatal Accident

One year ago last Saturday, William, the eldest son of Mr. Andrew Hood, Howick, entered the services of the Grand Trunk Railway Company full of life and hope, little thinking that exactly one year from that date he would meet with an accident which would cost him his life. However, such a fate awaited him. On Saturday morning last while coupling cars at Walkerton station, he slipped on a plank and fell under the wheels of a moving car, two wheels of which passed over his left leg frightfully mangling the flesh and shattering the bone from thigh to below the knee. he was carried into the house of a railway man nearby and in a short time four doctors were in attendance and the injured man's parents sent for. It was fully expected he would recover, but it was deemed necessary to amputate the leg, after which he appeared to be doing nicely, and it was thought that in about two weeks he could be removed to his father's home. On Tuesday last while his many warm friends in and around Clifford were feeling glad to think that he was rapidly recovering and would soon be home again, their gladness was turned into deep sorrow by a telegram announcing that at about twelve o'clock his spirit took its flight. his body was brought to Clifford on the evening train, and taken to his father's residence, from whence the funeral will take place to-day.
The deceased was twenty-four years of age and unmarried. He was considered one of the most faithful, industrious and sober men on the line. he will be missed by his fellow railroad employees and by his many friends in this vicinity.
His death has been a terrible shock to his parents, who have the sympathy of all their acquaintances in their hour of trial.

    Died:
Annie Cairns Hood was married to Jacob "Jake" Halliday. She was Jake's second wife. His first wife was her first cousin Penelope Hood, who died during childbirth. Annie and Jake had one child, Gordon Stewart, who died when he was seven months old.

Annie's brother John "Johnny" Scott Hood had relocated to Cass County, North Dakota in 1896 (per the 1900 census), where he was working as a carpenter. A year after Gordon's death, Annie, Jake, and Annie's siblings Martha and (Robert) George also relocated to Cass County. Annie and Jake eventually moved to Devils Lake where they lived for many years. Annie and Jake also lived for a time in Oregon. When Annie's mother died, her obituary lists Annie as living in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon. On the 1930 census, Annie and Jake are living in Multnomah County, Oregon. It is not known why Annie and Jake were living in Oregon, whether Jake had family there, if friends encouraged them to come, or if they simply wanted an adventure. Annie was known for her crocheting.

The couple was living again in Devils Lake when Jake died in 1939. Over 30 years were spent living in Devils Lake, and one of Annie's good friends must have been Ada Brainard (FAG #122047595) who is buried at Devils Lake Cemetery. Ada was just one year older than Annie and must have given her two 8 x 10" professional pictures of herself. The back of one photo read: "With Love to Mrs. Halliday From Mrs. Brainard". It is believed that one of Ada's hobbies was photography. Descendants from the Hood family kept these pictures in good shape for over 80 years, before one of Ada's great grandsons was tracked down and the pictures sent to him.

It is not known where Annie died. There is no record of a death certificate for her in North Dakota, so she may have returned to the Huron/Wellington County, Ontario Canada area and died there. Annie's younger sister Margaret had married Tony Holt and was living in Ontario. Jake, Annie, Penelope and Gordon are all buried at the same location at Harriston Cemetery, Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario.

Annie married Jacob "Jake" Halliday on 25 May 1891 in Howick, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. Jacob (son of James Halliday and Janet McVittie) was born on 9 Jun 1861 in Huron County, Ontario, Canada; was christened on 4 Aug 1861 in Edgemondville Presbyterian Church, Tuckersmith Twp, Huron County, Ontario, Canada; died on 30 Dec 1939 in Devil's Lake, Ramsey County, North Dakota, United States; was buried in Harriston Cemetery, Harriston, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. Martha's obituary:

Martha Park Hood, 81, died Friday, May 31, in Park View Nursing Home where she had been a patient for the past year. Miss Hood was born Nov. 4, 1875, in Clifford, Ontario, Canada. She had resided in Grants Pass for four years, her last address being 835 NE Seventh Street.

The deceased leaves a sister, Margaret Holt, of Grants Pass; a brother, Robert George Hood, Edmonton, Canada.

Private funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, at L. H. Hall chapel with Reader Howard Knapp officiating. Cremation will follow at Hillcrest Crematorium.

Martha was born in Howick Township, Huron County, Ontario. In 1899 when Martha was 23 years of age, she moved to Cass County, North Dakota with her older sister, Annie, Annie's husband Jake, and her brother (Robert) George. Martha never married, although her niece Mary Lou once told her daughter that supposedly she had had a "lover" who died in the war. Was this WWI, the Boer War or another war is not known. Martha eventually moved to Jamestown, ND where she supposedly had a dress shop and also created hats. Martha was well known for her beautiful hats. She was also known for doing needlepoint and knitting. Martha was on North Dakota's first all woman jury to consider a criminal case (1917/1928). This event took place in Jamestown, and in the newspaper there is a picture of the jury, with Martha shown in profile. After she grew up, Martha usually had her picture taken showing her right profile, which she felt produced a better picture of her.

In 1950 Martha returned to Clifford, Ontario to live with a cousin, Irene Butchart, but she eventually relocated to Grants Pass, Oregon to be near her sister Margaret Janet.

Margaret's remains were eventually moved by the cemetery (Hillcrest) to another location, but when contacted, the personnel there did not know where they are now located.

(Robert) George Hood, the son of Andrew Hood and Ann Scott, was born July 28, 1880 in Howick Township, Huron County, Ontario. According to the Cass County, North Dakota U.S. Federal Census for 1900, George had come to the United States one year earlier in 1899, probably with his sisters Annie and Martha, and Annie's husband Jake Halliday. His brother John is listed beside the rest of the siblings as having come to the United States in 1896. George's occupation is recorded on the census as a barber, and that was his occupation for his whole life.

George only lived in North Dakota for a few years, before relocating to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. George lived in Alberta for the rest of his life. On his father's obituary, it mentions that George was on his way to attend his father's funeral. The only other time he probably saw his Hood family was in about 1940, when the siblings had a reunion in North Dakota/Minnesota. All of the brothers and sisters were at the reunion (except for the oldest brother who had died in the 1800's), along with their first cousin Rob McMorran, who was also raised by George's parents. George was married Nov. 1, 1905/6 to Bertha Jane Follis. Bertha was born June 5, 1882/83 at Tara, Bruce County, Ontario, the daughter of Thomas William Follis and Jane Babington. The Follis family had also lived in North Dakota for a few years before moving to Alberta. The couple may have met in North Dakota, but that has not been documented. George and Bertha had four children: Eleanor Margaret, Gordon Follis, Mildred Jane and (George) William "Bill".

Family/Spouse: Bertha Jane Follis. Bertha (daughter of Thomas William Follis and Jane Babington) was born on 5 Jun 1882 in Walkerton, Brockton Twp, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada; died on 14 Aug 1978 in Medicine Hat, Medicine Hat Census Division, Alberta, Canada; was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Medicine Hat Census Division, Alberta, Canada. Stewart Hood, the son of Andrew Hood and Ann Scott, was born September 13, 1883 in Howick Twp, Huron County (Lot 33, Concession 13). In 1893 Stewart moved to Wingham, Ontario (perhaps with his parents?) and worked for three years as a "printers devil" to learn the trade. In 1902 when Stewart was still 18, he moved with his parents and younger sister Margaret Janet (who he was very close to) to Devil's Lake, Ramsey County, North Dakota, where his parents ran a boarding house for one year. His older siblings had already moved to Cass County, North Dakota several years earlier.

In 1905 Stewart revisited his future wife Pearl in the Harriston, Ontario area. Pearl who was the daughter of John Millar/Miller and Ann Hanly, was born February 15, 1886 in Harriston, Minto Township, Wellington County. She was one of five girls and three boys. John Miller, his wife Ann and their children show up on the 1881 census in Harriston. John and Ann were Irish and John was listed as a merchant by trade. Their religion was Methodist. Pearl was not yet born when this census was taken. On the 1901 census, John is working as a carpenter, and his daughter Pearl is 15 years old. John and Ann were still living in Harriston on the 1911 census, where John, age 68, was still a carpenter. Stewart married Pearl Amelia Millar on Mar. 12, 1908 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The newlywed couple then went to Jamestown, North Dakota where Stewart edited "The Daily Capitol." In September 1909 the family moved to Minneapolis with the McCellan Paper Company and then settled in Duluth. Stewart shows up on the 1910 U.S. Federal Census as living in St. Louis County, Minnesota with his family.

Plagued with ulcers, the family moved to Winnipeg in the spring of 1912 and sold lithography work. The family never lived in the United States again. After a miraculous healing of his ulcers in June 1916 through what was said to be the Christian Science religion, they moved to Toronto, Ontario with Rolfe Clark Lithographers, then to Montreal, Quebec in 1934 with the Montreal Lithographing Company. Stewart and Pearl had two children: Donald S. born Dec. 27, 1908 in Jamestown, ND, and Norah Louise born Nov. 14, 1914, in Winnipeg. Stewart died Sep. 4, 1951 and Pearl on Sep. 8/11, 1964 in Montreal. They are buried at York Cemetery, Section 6, Site 293, Willowdale (right by Toronto), Ontario.

Family/Spouse: Pearl Amelia Millar. Pearl (daughter of John Miller and Ann Jane Hanley) was born on 15 Feb 1886 in Harriston, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada; died on 8 Sep 1964 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada; was buried in York Cemetery, Toronto, Toronto Municipality, Ontario, Canada. Margaret was the daughter of Andrew Hood and Ann Scott, born May 29, 1886. Her parents had already sold their farm in Howick Twp., Huron County, Ontario by the late 1800's. According to the Howick history book, by 1897, someone else already owned Andrew's farm. The farm was probably sold because none of Andrew Hood's sons showed any interest in running the farm. One wonders if any of the children ever regretted that decision. On the 1901 Canadian census, the Hood family is shown as living in the village of Wingham (Andrew, Ann and their youngest two children Stewart and Margaret). It was in Wingham where Stewart learned his trade. Margaret moved down to the United States (North Dakota) with her parents and brother, Stewart, in September 1902 when she was 16 years old.

At first Margaret lived in Devils Lake where her parents ran a boarding house, but after about a year the family moved to Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota. It was here, that Margaret eventually met William McCauley, who she married in Brown County, South Dakota. A daughter, Mary Louise ("Mary Lou") was adopted by the couple. Mary Lou's birth date of December 4, 1926 was supposedly given to her to match that of her Uncle John, her mother's brother, who was born on December 4th.

Mary Lou once reminisced that her mother Margaret had had a few webbed toes, something that was quite common at that time when children were born in their homes. On Margaret's United States Petition for Naturalization, she lists her height as 5' 6 1/2", and her weight is 135 lbs.

William, Margaret and Mary Lou eventually moved from Jamestown, back to Devils Lake, where Margaret and William lived for many years until William's death. After William's death, Margaret stayed for a while with a cousin, Irene Butchard (McMorran line), at Clifford, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, the region where Margaret had spent her childhood. The Butchard family was well known to Margaret. Irene's mother had been raised by Andrew Hood and Ann Scott, along with her sibling Rob, after the death of Ann's sister Louisa. Louisa's children had been given to different family members to help raise.

On October 12, 1950, Margaret married Anthony "Tony" Holt, originally of the Listowel, Perth County, Ontario area. Margaret had first met Tony when he was a boarder at her parent's boarding house in Devils Lake.

Tony and Margaret lived on the Holt family farm for a time in Ontario, but eventually moved to Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon. Tony had a son who was living in Grants Pass, and Margaret's daughter Mary Lou was in southern California working for the Civil Service.

Tony died on Feb. 28, 1967 and is buried in Grants Pass. Margaret died on September 3, 1968 and is buried with her first husband, William, at the Devils Lake Cemetery, space 7, Lot 13 of Block 8.
