Died:
A direct descendant of Pilgrim passengers on the "Mayflower" and the 2nd ship "Fortune", William was the 6th born of 10 children and raised in Massachusetts. In 1863, at the age of 28, he married Harriet Robinson in her native state of Connecticut and promptly left New England by sea for the Isthmus of Panama. Reportedly crossing to the Pacific by mule, they then sailed north to San Francisco. The next leg of their journey would be by river boat north up the Sacramento River to the northwest portion of the Sacramento Valley where they would homestead a large ranch in the foothills west of the present day town of Orland, Glenn County. William's older brother Lysander Cushman had settled in this area a few years earlier. While William's original Homestead grant was for 160 acres, he amassed a much larger holding over his lifetime, estimated to be between 500 to 900 acres. He and his wife had 4 children; 2 daughters and 2 sons. His death certificate indicates cause of death as, "Lobar pneumonia."

His 13 Jan 1911 obituary in the newspaper of the county seat (Willows) of Glenn County described William H. Cushman as, "one of the pioneer residents of the western part of Glenn county, [who] died at his home near Millsaps post-office last Saturday morning after a short illness. His death was entirely unexpected and came as a surprise and shock to his friends and relatives. For many years Mr. Cushman has been living in the western part of the county on his farm next to Chrome mountain. He has always taken an active part in the life of his community and was highly respected by all who knew him. ... The body was cremated in Oakland on Tuesday."

Another pioneer of this country has answered the final summons. This time grim Death has taken W. H. Cushman from among us.
Mr. Cushman was a resident of near Chrome and was known to almost everyone in this section of Glenn county, having resided in the Newville country since 1863. He was engaged in farming and stock raising.
Mr. Cushman was born in Massachusetts in 1835, and like many other young men of his time, came west to seek his fortune.
Although not allied with any organization or denomination, he was a man of sterling worth and character and commanded the respect of all who knew him by his integrity.
Mr. and Mrs. Cushman visited their daughter, Mrs. J. W. Birch, in Orland Christmas week and it seems that the trip home by way of Willows and Elk Creek was rather severe on Mr. Cushman and he contracted a severe cold. This developed into pneumonia, which after a brief illness caused his death Saturday morning about three o'clock. Mrs. Birch and a brother, accompanied by Dr. Goldman, arrived at the bedside during the night, but it was too late to be of any assistance.
The body was taken to Oakland for cremation according to a wish expressed by the deceased.
Besides a widow, Mrs. Harriet Cushman, he left four grown children as follows: Lester Cushman of Chrome, Wilfred Cushman of Dixon, Mrs. J. W. Birch of Orland, and Mrs. I. D. Luce of Newville.

Funeral Services For Helen C. Luce, Chrome Pioneer

Funeral services were held at two last Saturday afternoon at the Sweet Chapel in Willows, for Mrs. Helen C. Luce, 88, native daughter of Glenn county and lifelong resident of the Chrome district. Mrs. Luce passed away Wednesday morning at the Corning Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for the past two months.
Mrs. Luce was born in the Chrome area west of Orland on June 11, 1873, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Cushman, who migrated to California from New York state in 1860. She was the widow of Isaac D. Luce, who died in 1945.
Mrs. Luce is survived by 79 descendants including a son, Hugh C. Luce of Flournoy, four daughters, Mrs. Celia E. Ellis, and Mrs. Harriet A. Ellis, both of Elk Creek; Mrs. Marguerite D. Williams of Richfield, and Mrs. Alta T. Cook of Corning, 20 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. A son, Lester Luce, died earlier this year.

Huge Luce, 83, dies at home

Hugh Luce, well known Flournoy rancher and horseman, was found dead in his home yesterday. He was 83 years of age and had resided in Glenn and Tehama Counties all his life.
He was born Nov. 4, 1898 in Newville to pioneer parents, Isaac and Helen Cushman Luce.
He was a member of Tehama County Farm Bureau and Olivet Lodge, No. 205, F. and A. M.
He is survived by five daughters, Arabelle Maitia, Nita Pitkin, Charlotte Humphrey and Barbara Humphrey, all of Flournoy, and Ardell Pitkin of Red Bluff; a sister, Marguerite Williams of Corning; 22 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
His wife, Neva Luce, died June 1980.
Memorial services will be held in the family plot in Paskenta Cemetery Sunday at 2 p.m. with Olivet Lodge, No. 205 officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Brothers Mortuary. - Transcribed by M

A member of an early-day Paskenta-Flournoy Pioneer family, Venita "Nita" Celia Pitkin died on March 15, 2014 in Chico. She was 90 years old. Nita was the oldest daughter born on April 3, 1923 in Corning, CA to Hugh and Neva Luce. She was raised with her four sisters; Arabelle, Ardell, Charlotte and Barbara in Flournoy. She attended local schools and graduated from Corning Union High School in 1941. She married Gayle Pitkin of Red Bluff on October 6, 1941. Nita and Gayle made their home in Flournoy, where Gayle worked for Crane Mills and ranched in Flournoy. Nita was a homemaker. They had 8 children; Sheralea, Carolyn, Robert, Kathleen, Toni, Marsha, Brent and Maureen. She loved family get togethers and visiting. Survivors include; Sherry Vance of Flournoy, Connie Walker (Ted) of Red Bluff, Robert Pitkin (Deb) of Flournoy, Toni Ross of Klamath Falls, OR, Marsha Pitkin (Don) of Grenada, CA, Brent Pitkin (Helen) of Corning and Maureen McGehee of Corning. 26 Grandchildren, 31 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren, and a large extended family. A lifelong resident of Tehama County, she was born Aug. 21, 1926. She graduated from Flournoy Elementary School and Corning High School.

Surviving are: husband of 48 years, Allen Pitkin; son, Gary Pitkin of Sparks, Nevada; daughter, Darla Farley of Sparks; sisters, Nita Pitkin, Arabell Maitia, Charlotte Humphrey and Barbara Humphey, all of Flournoy and grandchildren Reese and Amber Pitkin of Sparks.

She was predeceased by grandson, Justin Farley.

Charlotte Humphrey passed away at her Flournoy home on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008. She was 80.

She was born on Dec. 4, 1927, in the Flournoy-Paskenta area to Hugh and Neva Luce and was raised on the family ranch in Flournoy.

Upon graduation from high school, she began working for the United States Forest Service in Paskenta and with Crane Mills. She married Fred Humphrey on Dec. 6, 1947. They continued ranching in the Flournoy-Paskenta area.
Charlotte was always proud of the cattle produced on the ranch, especially when steers were entered at various fairs and jackpots. Many of which made the championship drive not only locally, but throughout the state.
Charlotte was quite active in the Flournoy 4-H Club and served as the community leader, and she enjoyed teaching cooking to children. Her grandchildren enjoyed helping Grandma make taffy, divinity and penuche. She was always delighted to furnish divinity for the fall auction to benefit the Paskenta Community Hall. She also enjoyed the time served as director and president of the Tehama County Farm Bureau.
As an avid rodeo fan, Charlotte, along with family and friends, has attended the National Finals Rodeo after it moved to Las Vegas, Nev. from Oklahoma City, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Humphrey and two sisters Ardell Pitkin and Barbara Humphrey.

She is survived by daughters Beverly (Jim) Ross of Red Bluff, Carmel (David) Spaulding of Terra Bella; sons Ronald Humphrey, Randy (Sharon) Humphrey of Flournoy; grandchildren Tara (Bryce) Carlson, Hillary Turner, Nicki Humphrey, Cheyenne Humphrey, Kristin McGarity, Daniel Humphrey, Bailey Spaulding, Tyler Spaulding, Kristin (Chuck) Morris, Aaron Ross (Courtney Tanner); five great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Arabelle Maitia and Nita Pitkin of Flournoy. She will be greatly missed by all.

A graveside service will be held on at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Paskenta Cemetery.

DEE HANSEN Arabelle "Dee" (Burress) Hansen passed away peacefully at her home in Orland, CA on July 20, 2018, following a brief battle with cancer.

Dee was born on June 23, 1939 in Willows, CA to Lester Luce and Velma (Luce) Holland. Dee was raised on a family ranch in Elk Creek with her brothers, Hugh (Patti) and Lonnie Luce (Carol). She attended high school in Willows with the class of 1957. In January of 1958 Dee married Jim Burress (of Willows, CA) at the age of 18. They had two children: a son, Hank, in 1958; and daughter, Karen, in 1959. During their 53 years of marriage, Dee and Jim lived mostly on Llano Seco Rancho where Dee enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, playing Bridge and spending time with family and lifelong best friends.

Dee married Dick Hansen (of Elk Creek) in a lovely outdoor ceremony in June of 2016. Dee is survived by her husband Dick, daughter Karen (Michael) Cosper, son-in-law Dan DuBose, sister Liz Henniger (Rudy); 3 grandchildren: Danielle Ford (Grant), Hank DuBose (Kayla), and JonMichael Cosper; 4 great grandsons: Kash (10), Conley (9), Kasen (6), and Aarow (1week), and sister-in-law, Shirley (Burress) Eggert (Bill) and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Velma and Lester Luce, husband Jim Burress, son Hank Burress, and her brothers, Hugh and Lonnie Luce.

The family would like to invite you to celebrate her life at 1:00 p.m. on, August 8, 2018, at Open Gate Christian Fellowship (950 W. Laurel St., Willows, CA)(potluck immediately following the celebration of life). In lieu of flowers, a fund is being established for Dee's great niece, Jessica Thur, age 32, to support her own ongoing battle with cancer. His best friend and constant companion, Cricket, will miss him greatly. Mr. Luce lived in Elk Creek, CA during his youth and attended schools in Willows and Elk Creek. He graduated Elk Creek High School in 1960; served in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Hull DD945 (1960-1964); made 3 West Pac cruises during that time. In 1965 he attended meat cutter's school in Toledo, OH. He worked as a meat cutter at several stores in Chico, CA, including Purity, Miller's Market, Shop and Save, and Safeway where he retired in 1998. In 2002 he moved to Tennessee. Lester was a prolific leather carver. He won numerous awards in international leather show competitions. In December 2012, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and given a year to live. He fought a long and courageous battle, overcoming many obstacles, including a stroke. He and Carol were able to make several memorable trips to California to visit family over the next four years, including a 6000 mile road trip in 2014.
