    Land & Property:
Sgt. John Ashley (Ashby) received an initial location ticket for all of Lot 24 in Concession 2, Front of Yonge Township, Leeds County. This property is slightly to the north west of the village of Mallorytown. An investigation of this property reveals that it was all swamp land draining into Jones Creek which flows through the southern end of the property. Early maps indicate much more open water on the creek than visible on today's GIS maps suggesting that the water table has changed, but today this area remains undeveloped. Farmland in the township begins in concession 3.
A second location ticket was granted for Lot 19 SW in Concession 10 of Bathurst township of Lanark County, then part of the Bathurst District. This remote property was located on the shores of the Bolton Creek as it flows out of Bennett Lake. It is also directly west of the village of Fallbrook

    Land & Property:
John Ashby relinquished this property and it was regranted 11 Dec 1821 to Simon Grey.

Moved west to homestead in 1891. Took rail to Melita, MB (end of rail). Traveled north to Tilston, MB, 10-6-29 Rural Municipality of Albert, where closest neighbour was 9-10 miles south. Bob McInally and Jimmy Brown homesteads just east of homestead. Other neighbours were primarily from Iceland - Olsens, Abrahamsens, Fredricksons, Thordarsons.
These settlers left during the 1930's. They built a sod hut on SW quarter and gathered buffalo chips for fuel because there were no trees or shrubs. Nearest supplies were from Melita or Reston. Lumber was hauled from Moose Mountain near Carlyle and a two room shack was built.

Alexander died three years after homesteading and was buried just north of homestead buildings. Susan and children moved to Reston where children could attend school. She and children moved to homestead in the summers in order to keep her rights. Susan, Peter and Christina moved back to the farm when Peter was old enough to run the farm.

Susan died on the farm in 1930 at 80 years of age. She divided her land among her three children and Peter bought Fraser's and Christina's shares. Fraser and Christina never married and remained on the farm until their deaths.

    Land & Property:
The Ashby home, now in 1969, belongs to Morris, son of John Ashby - Lot 22 of the 10th and 11th concessions. To the left hand side, high up from Bolton Creek, runs the old 11th concession known as the MacKay line, because of two brothers by that name who owned a double section of land. It still goes by that name.

(There was) A log boarding house, once owned and assumed to be built by Sandy Bain, who owned a mill by the Bolton Creek, operated by Jack Bolton. The first mill to be built in what was originally called Bolton's Mills, then changed to Fallbrook. It has been assumed this log building was used as a store as well as a boarding house, as there were shelves and partitions built in, similar to stores in those days when William Asby and his wife Charlotte Morris, moved there. Prior to that Bill Gallagher had lived there.

William Ashby had lived in the McDonald house (now in 1969 belongs to Roy Beach) then in Drummond, from there to what was known for years as the Murray House, but had at that time (the Murray's time) been down on the banks of the Fall river near John Blair's.

William Ashby bought the Gallagher property and house from Bill, consisted of 130 or 140 acres.
The family were Jim Ashby 1887, John Ashby 1899, Bill Ashby, Lizzie 1891, Lottie, Esther.

William Ashby died in 1913. His son John lived with his mother and worked the farm.
    Jim Ashby married Bessie Thompson.
    Lizzie married Herb Gallagher.
    Mae married John Watt.
    Lottie married Herb Watt.

In 1927 John Ashby with Mick Flood as carpenter built a large house directly behind the old one.
In 1928 Mrs William Ashby died.
In 1932 John Ashby marrried Lillian North, daugher of Mr and Mrs Thomas North from the 11th line, Bathurst, previously from Bennett's Lake.
They had 2 sons, Morris 1932 and Ivan 1939; one daughter and one son died in infancy.
Morris married Shirley Burke in 1959.
    Ivan married Phyllis Foster.

In 1965 John Ashby died, Lillian moved to Perth, Morris and family moved from the Watt farm at Playfairville, which he had bought, to the home farm and lives there with his wife and one son and two daughters.
Besides farming, Morris has worked for ---- years with the County.

    Mr. William Ashby
A life-long resident of Bathurst, in the vicinity of Fallbrook, was Mr. Wm. Ashby. Death summoned him away last Thursday, March 13th, after an illness with pneumonia.

For two years past heart trouble had given him much annoyance, and it was thought by his friends who were closest to him that this affection of the heart would be the cause of death. But, strange to say, it proved altogether otherwise, for the attack of pneumonia developed strongly and quickly proved fatal.

Wm. Ashby was born in Bathurst 51 years ago. His occupation waa farming, which he followed with much success. Twenty-eight years ago he married Charlotte Morris. There are six children, all at home - James, William, John, May, Elisabeth and Lottie. Anglican in religious matters and Conservative in politics Mr. Ashby led a consistent and honorable life, true to his church and party. The funeral last Saturday from Fallbrook to Playfair cemetery was largely attended, Rev. T. L. Aborn conducting the services.

    Notes:

(Research):It is interesting that I cannot find birth records for any of this family although baptisms may exist.

I have some thought that ?u?Mary Ann?/u? who was born 4 months after Isabella marriage to William may have been James' child as registered on her death certificate but was raised by Isabella. James seems to have preferred the military life and may have been involved in travel and training/management with them.

It is interesting that ?u?Lucy's?/u? death certificate also lists James as her father.

Could it be that James and Isabella had a relationship, Mary Ann was on her way, and William stepped in to marry Isabella because James was elsewhere? Could this be where the dual name James William started to appear in the records? What became of William?

William mysteriously disappears, never to be found. James cannot marry Isabella because William's death is not known or recorded. The census taker in 1871 is confused and enters both names?

Where a mother's name is recorded on most of the children's death certificates, some do not mention a father.

I think the true story will never be known, lost in family/community lore, maybe whispered about but never formally acknowledged.

    Birth:
Mary Ann Warrington Matthie's death certificate leaves her mother's name blank and indicates that her father was James Warrington.

I think the true story will never be known, lost in family/community lore, maybe whispered about but never formally acknowledged.

Mrs. McDonald was born on the 11th line of Bathurst, on April 18, fifty-six years ago. She was the daugher of the late Mr and Mrs William Warrington. Thirty-four years ago she was married to Peter McDonald who survives to mourn her loss together with two sons, Nelson and Gordon and two daughters Lila and Viola. One son Sstanley died ten years ago. Three sisters also survive, Mrs. Matthie (Mary A.); Mrs Sam Ennis of Blairmore, Alta; and Mrs. T. Lake (Christena).

Mrs McDonald was always a regular attendant at the United Church at Playfair, where as a little girl she attended the Sunday School and never lost interest in it. Although of a quiet disposition she was ever readay to help in any way and every way she could the interest of the church and community. In the home she will be sadly missed as she was a devoted wife and mother and although in poor health for some years she was never heard to complain, but bore her trials with christian gratitude. She was laid in her last resting place in Playfair cemetery on July 24th, the Rev. I.N. Beckstead conducting the service in Playfair Church and took for his text, "Our God is a refugeand a present help in every trouble." ?b?24 Aug 1923 Obituary page 4 column 3 Perth Courier
?/b?Ashby - At an early hour on Saturday morning, August 18?sup?th?/sup?, after a lingering illness, death came to Mr. William Ashby in the War Memorial Hospital, Perth, where he had gone for treatment a few weeks previously.
Deceased, who was in his 38?sup?th?/sup? year, enlisted for overseas service in the 130?sup?th?/sup? Lanark and Renfrew Battalions in December 1915, and while in camp in England was transferred to the 3?sup?rd?/sup? Canadian Battalion. He went over to France in November 1916 and served in the trenches until January 23?sup?rd?/sup? of the following year, when in answer to call for volunteers to join a bombing party in the Vimy section he offered his services and during the night of above received a number of wounds, one of which resulted in the loss of an eye. He was invalided home in September 1917 and since then has been in failing health. Thus, another name is added to the list making eight in all from McDonald's Corners who gave their lives for King and Country. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Ellen Duncan, he leaves to mourn his loss two children, Lila and Wilbert: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ashby of Fallbrook; three brothers, Robert of Fallbrook; Archie and Russell in the west; and four sisters - Mrs. John Lake of Lanark; Mrs. John Mathers (sic) of Braeside; Mrs. Dan Nichols of Carleton Place and Maggie at home.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. A.M. Little in Knox Church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock and very largely attended. Among those in attendance were Lieut. Col. T.R. Caldwell, O.B.E.; Major J.A. Hope, D.S.O. M.C.; Lieut. W.R. Strike; Flight-Lieut. F.K. Hope; Bandmaster Keays and Philip Kelly, representing the Lanark and Renfrew Battalion and G.W.V.A. The body was borne to its last resting space in the Highland Cemetery and after the burial service the Last Post was sounded by Bandmaster Keays of Perth. Members of Court Stewart, No. 481, C.O. F., of Fallbrook were the pallbearers. Among the numerous floral offerings laid upon the bier was a wreath from Court Stewart of which deceased was a member. Much sympathy is felt for the family in their sad bereavement. -Era.

    Notes:

Isobella Ashby was a noted tailor/dressmaker/seamstress who worked for a number of families in the Lanark area. She initially trained in Perth. Her diaries provide some insight into life during the years on the Balderson farm when the family was growing up.

(Research):?u?Notes from interview with Grandpa (John Cumming) Mather.

?/u?Grandma (Bella) had a grade 3 education. When she was 12 she was babysitting for income. Her older sister, Elizabeth Ruth, a twin of Bob, died of black diptheria. Two others in the family also died of Diptheria. They lived on the Jack Anderson place (Mary Scott's Grandparents?) on the edge of Fallbrook, ON. They were Baptists (Lanark Congregation). They are buried in the Playfairville cemetery, attended St. Peter's Anglican Church and the Methodist Church later.

?u?Telephone call with Gordon Mather December 2015
?/u?About 1916 Grandma had a head injury from a hay fork. For the following year they lived with the Mather family on the Cameron farm near Balderson. Her limp was the result of brain damage arising from this accident. In the early 1930's Grandma suffered from blackouts when she would not recognize the children, Gordon and Evelyn(age 9-10). These blackouts led to a month or more in a Kingston hospital for treatment of the head injury.
After she passed away, Grandpa was surprised to learn that she still had money invested from her seamstress/tailor days and there was considerable income tax to pay on the amount. She had used war bonds and later government bonds to accumulate this money.
Grandma had three years of schooling obtained after a 2 mile walk to the nearest school. As the oldest girl in the family she left school to care for younger children. At approx age of 12 she was hired as a mother's helper by another family - a Mrs. Anderson in Falbrook. At approximately age 14 she moved to Perth where she apprenticed with Mrs. Lyons to gain her sewing skills. She worked for a number of families along the Scotch Line near Perth where she moved from household to household with her sewing machine and equipment/supplies. The Poole family was one of these families. She made clothing for men, women and children.
She would piece quilts during the summer and in the winter she would set up a quilt frame in the parlour. She frequently used her 'rag bag' for fabric for these quilts so it is probable that the woolen fabric in the quilts I remember were scraps from her days as a seamstress.

    Notes:

Archie homesteaded near Westlock, north of Edmonton, NE and later had a dairy operation at Westlock, AB. He had been a cheesemaker in Ontario.

(Research):Archie attended Kingston Dairy School in Kingston ON before travelling to Edmonton in 1918, He worked at the Woodland Dairy and Edmonton City Dairy before moving to Rossington where he opened a cheese factory across from the Rossington store. While there, he lived on the Brownlie place in a log house on the banks of the Pembina River (NW1/4-14-60-1-W5th). Water was drawn from the Pembina River and there was a lake on the other side of the house.

The family moved to Westlock where Archie worked as a cream tester at the Westlock Creamery. After leaving the creamery they moved two miles east of Westlock to the Edison District where Archie farmed and started a dairy business, Rich Valley Dairy, deliverying milk in Westlock. He later moved two and and half miles west of Westlock (Edison district, on banks of Wabsh R.)) where he farmed and carried on his dairy business (Rich Valley Dairy). Milk was delivered seven days a week, and when short, would return to town (Westlock) after the evening milking to make up for the daytime delivery shortage. During his years of milk delivery he collected over 350 bottles from Canadian and USA towns. He gave the collection to Dick Adkins and were displayed at Dick's mini-museum on hwy 18 west of Westlock for many years.

Archie originally had a herd of Jersey cows and later switched to Holsteins.

After 35 years, Archie retired from the Dairy business in 1959 when he sold to the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool.

Archie and his family lived on the banks of the Wabush until his death in 1964. His wife Thelma continued to live there with her family until her death in 1974. In 1984 their daughters Eileen and Lonetta continued to live there with their husbands.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Ashby, of Bathurst, (near Fallbrook), was plunged into sorrow on Monday by the death by drowning of their thirteen-month old daughter. The little one had been out of its parents sight scarcely three minutes, but during that time had fallen into a firkin of water outside the door, and when discovered life was extinct. More than their share of trouble has fallen to the lot of Mr. and Mrs. Ashby, as only about four years ago three of their little ones were taken away in a brief period by diphtheria. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to the cemetery at Playfair.

    Notes:

(Research):Although it was understood for years that Melville died of diptheria, it appears that he went to live with and was raised by his grandparents. The year of his death was believed to have been 1893 and may have been the year he moved to his grandparent's home. His siblings do not appear to have known of this relationship although they would have gone to school with him. My grandmother would have been too young to know what was happening. John and Mary Jane lost another child to diptheria and one to drowning around this time and it would have been a very difficult time for the family.

    Birth:
On ?b?John Melville Ashby?/b?'s marriage certificate his father is identified as William Ashby - the logical person would be William Samuel Ashby (1862-1913), brother of Martha based on an exhaustive search of Ashby records.

It is possible that Martha is an adoptive mother, not biological. No records have been found for his birth and this may not have been his birth name.

It is possible that Martha had an out of wedlock birth or she is an adoptive mother, not biological. No records have been found for his birth suggesting that this may not be his birth name. He may have been born to another woman in the community and his father is William Samuel Ashby. This is the only "William" in the family tree that would be of a probable age to father John Melville.

John Melville Ashby is often confused with John Middleton Ashby (1888-1893), son of John Ashby and Mary Ann Clark. John Middleton Ashby died at the age of five years during a diptheria epidemic, one of the three children to die at that time.

I believe that the date 2 Jun 1887 is the correct birth date. The date of 21 Apr 1888 was used on his WW1 CEF Personnel files. The lack of a birth certificate may have led to the use of John Middleton's birth record for his documentation.
