    Died:
Emily Covert Roscoe, 96, passed peacefully from this earth as twilight fell on the warm summer evening of Aug. 7, 2014.

Emily Jane Covert ("Emmy Jane" or "Em Jane") was born to Judson H. Covert and Kathryn Murr Covert on July 1, 1918, in Billings. She was later joined by her red-haired brother, John, and the two of them were raised on a farm located at the intersection of 24th Street West and Central Avenue. She attended school in Billings, rode her horse to the then-new South Park swimming pool in the summers and made friendships that lasted a lifetime. She attended Billings High School, where she made many more friendships and first met her husband-to-be, Bill. Emily then entered nursing school at the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Ore., graduating as an R.N. in 1941. She worked briefly as an R.N. at Good Samaritan in Portland, and then Deaconess Hospital (now Billings Clinic).

As WWII began, she made plans to serve her country and fill a crucial need by working aboard hospital ships returning home full of wounded servicemen. However, that plan was interrupted by a proposal of marriage and an invitation to follow Bill to Yukon, Okla., where he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight instructor. Em married her high school sweetheart, William P. Roscoe Jr., on May 23, 1942, in Yukon. The ceremony was briefly interrupted when Bill's fellow flight instructors "buzzed" the church as the vows were exchanged. Their marriage lasted 56 years, until Bill's passing in 1998. Em never remarried or even considered it, remaining loyal to her husband to the very end.

From 1943 to 1946, Em and Bill lived in Lima, Peru, while Bill worked for Pan-American Grace Airways. As Americans abroad, they quickly identified with other ex-pats. While the men flew planes, the wives drew close for companionship and child rearing. Again, Em added to her long list of lifetime friendships, and she really enjoyed staying in touch and occasionally reuniting with her "FFG" (Funny Farm Gang.)

In 1946, Em and Bill returned to Billings where they added to and raised their family. Emily was a charter member of Holy Rosary Church, and later, a longtime member of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. She volunteered her clerical skills to Holy Rosary Grade School, while her children attended there and also was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She loved to dance, enjoyed a wide variety of music, could pull off some really wicked April Fools' Day jokes and cherished the years she and her husband enjoyed at the family cabin on the Stillwater River.

But first, last and always, she enjoyed being a mother. Being her child was not required of anyone needing her motherly love. She eagerly embraced all additions to her ever-growing family circle and could be counted on for guidance, comfort and unconditional acceptance whenever it was needed. She also had a tender heart for the less fortunate, the outcast, the ignored and the forgotten. While her body failed, her mind stayed sharp to the very end and she made a point to stay current on local news, world affairs, sports and politics.

Emily was preceded in death by her parents, Jud and Kate Covert; her husband, Bill; her brother, John Covert; her young son, Judson (1951); her daughter, Katie (Tom Stack); her son, John; and her nephew, Mac Covert.

She is survived by her children, Jim (Lin) Roscoe of Billings, Bill Roscoe III of Sacramento, Calif., Tris (Jim) Salyer of Billings, Mike (Amy) Roscoe of Billings; her nephew, Doug (Kathy) Covert of Phoenix; her niece, Sue (Covert) Ortiz, also of Phoenix; 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, and continues until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary located at 1001 Alderson Ave. A family welcome plus viewing begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and a vigil commences at 7 p.m., followed by a celebration and remembrance of Emily's life immediately after. Cremation is planned.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at noon on Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, located at 215 N. 31st St. in Billings, followed by private graveside services.

Interment at Mountview Cemetery, Billings, MT. Per Death Certificate:

Friends who wish to remember Emily in a special way may send memorials to Billings Area Catholic Education Trust, PO Box 31158, Billings, MT, 59107; Mental Health Foundation, 1245 N. 29th St., Billings, MT, 59101; or any charity of their choice.

    Died:
    Kathryn 'Katie' Roscoe Stack
MISSOULA ? Katie Stack, of Missoula, passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the family home surrounded by her loved ones after a three-and-a-half year battle with cancer. She fought cancer daily with strength and courage. Katie never let cancer take her spirit, kindness or love.

Katie was born June 5, 1950, in Billings, to William P. and Emily Covert Roscoe. She was educated at Holy Rosary Grade School, Billings Central Catholic High School and Carroll College.

On Aug. 3, 1974, she was married to Thomas E. Stack in Lincoln. Also in 1974, the couple moved to Missoula, where she resided the next 35 years, raising her family.

Katie's vocation in life was to her loving family. She also held various jobs to help the family in times of financial need.

She was primarily a stay-at-home mom, who raised four wonderful children, Toby, Anna, Eddie and Willie. She gave them love and strength, confidence, intellect and spiritualism.

Katie was the heart of the family. She ran the house, every task, big or small. She lived her life for the family, for which they are ever grateful. Katie was a devoted mother who played and laughed with her children every day. There are endless memories of arts and crafts, games, forts, singing, dancing, imagination play and so much more. She was a stern mother, but a playmate and friend to her children as well. She did everything with love. She'd hug and kiss and say "I love you" to each child every day. She guided them through their challenges, she shared their triumphs and failures. She always attended their many activities and sporting events. She loved their friends and treated them as if they were her own.

Katie had deep compassion for those in need. In the mid-1980s, she was a parent and guiding light to her foster son, Les. She loved her family deeply.

Katie had a passion for music. She loved playing the piano and jamming with her friends. Over the years, she was a member of several local bands. She also had a passion for reading, which she indulged in daily. It was her favorite hobby.

Katie explored the mysteries of the universe and spiritualism, seeking answers and knowledge through her addiction to reading. To say she had many opinions would be an understatement. She was passionate in her beliefs, which she loved to share and discuss with her friends, "The Girls Group." Katie cherished the time she spent with her friends. She loved going to Pattee Canyon, Symes Hot Springs and gathering at each other's homes for Ladies' Party.

Katie loved her many trips to New York to visit Grandma and Grandpa Stack and all the many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. She enjoyed all the cultural and historical experiences of New York City.

Katie's true love was spending time at the Roscoe family cabin, "Por Fin" and "Rockhaven" on the Stillwater River near the town of Absarokee, in eastern Montana, where she spent many summers as a child. She loved making the pilgrimage from Missoula to the cabin every summer and the peaceful time spent with the children, family and nature at her "favorite place." She instilled her love for the cabin in all of us.

Katie was preceded in death by her father, William P. Roscoe II; brother Judson Roscoe; brother John Roscoe; and father-in-law, Thomas E. Stack Sr.

Katie is survived by her four children, Toby and his wife Kari, Anna, Eddie and Willie; her husband Tom; and her grandchildren, Ethan and Ella Stack; and her other loving family members, Bryan Thormahlen, Katy Furlong and Sara Dennehy. She is also survived by her mother, Emily C. Roscoe; her siblings, Jim Roscoe, Bill Roscoe III, Tris Sayler, Mike Roscoe; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mom, we love and miss you dearly.

A private ceremony was held in Missoula on Monday, Nov. 9, for family members.

Memorials can be made in her name to St. Joseph Elementary, 503 Edith St., Missoula, MT 59801; and Missoula Loyola Catholic High School, 320 Edith St., Missoula, MT 59801.

    Died:
    John Joseph Roscoe
John came into this world to greet his extensive family on Oct. 29, 1953, at Billings. He returned his gift of life to God on Feb. 6, 2009, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

He was the son of William Patrick Roscoe and Emily Covert Roscoe. He attended Holy Rosary School and graduated from Billings Central Catholic High School. Later, he attended Montana State University. In 1974, he married Kara Clayton and they later divorced. He worked at Roscoe Steel and various other places in Billings.

John's interests were wide and eclectic. He had a lifelong love of aviation and model plane building. He was an excellent photographer and many of his photos are among his family's most prized possessions. At times, he enjoyed painting and drawing. He logged thousands of miles walking and his favorite destination was Rainbow House, where he enjoyed his friends and buddies. He'd ride his bike in fair weather to and from the Billings Clinic for meals in the cafeteria. He loved and enjoyed his family, rifle hunting, the family cabins on the Stillwater River above Absarokee and sitting in the sun and reinventing the day. He was always his own man and did things his own way. His musical tastes included The Beatles, The Eagles, Jimi Hendrix and Kenny G.

John was preceded in death by his brother, Judson Michael; and his father, William Patrick. He is survived by his mother; his son, Scott Roscoe and Scott's brother Jamey Clayton; as well as grandchildren, Austyn and Christian. Also Jim (Lin) Roscoe, Mike (Amy) Roscoe, Tris (Jim) Salyer, all of Billings. In addition, Katie (Tom) Stack of Missoula and Bill Roscoe III of Sacramento, Calif. Other survivors are very special to him and include his nieces and nephews Clay, Matt, Molly, Toby, Anna, Eddie, Willie, Colleen, Judson, John, Joe and Jimmy.

The family offers special thanks to Peggy Hough of Rainbow House and Fr. John Houlihan of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral for being John's friends and comfort, especially in his final struggle with cancer.

Peacefully sleep comes to a dear and beloved heart. Sweet dreams, John.

Memorials should be directed to the benefit of the Rainbow House, 925 N. 18th, Billings, MT 59101.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. The Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral.
