In Burleigh, A Well-Known Resident of North Monaghan is Instantly Killed
Mr. Matthew Johnston a well-known resident of North Monaghan was instantly killed by lightning on Wednesday.
It appears that Mr. Johnson, who had gone north to purchase cattle, having finished his business, joined a berrying party and when the storm came on the party took shelter under a large tree. The party was composed of Messrs. James Matthews, Joseph Matthews and Robert Little. The electric bolt struck about ten feet from the ground and took a strip about three inches wide down the tree. Mr. Johnston was lying closest to it. The current struck him on the left side of the head and ran down the left side of the body, killing him instantly, its course was marked on the body. A small hole was bored by it through a watch Mr. Johnston carried in his pocket.
Mr. Joseph Matthews was also struck and was stunned. For a few minutes he lay unconscious, and then he partially recovered and was assisted by his brother and Little to the shore of Stony Lake, about a mile distant, where two men named Hamilton, who were on the lake in a boat took him to Crow's store, further down the lake. He was in a dangerous condition when the party came away. The accident happened near Jack's and ?u?Ell's ?/u?creek, in Burleigh township about 4 p.m. James Matthew who is a farmer living in Dummer, after getting his brother to a place of safety, hastened back for the body of Mr. Johnston and drove it to town, driving all night and returning to town about nine o'clock yesterday morning.
Matthew Johnston, the deceased, was one of the oldest and most respected residents of North Monaghan. He took an active interest in township affairs and was for a number of years a member of this township council and had served as Treasurer of the municipality. A few years ago, he opened a butcher shop in the south end of the town, and later took charge of the J.P. Kennedy meat market on George Street. In all his relations with his fellow citizens he was scrupulously honest and straightforward and was highly respected throughout the district. His sudden death will arouse the deepest regret (of) his many friends and acquaintances, and the sincerest sympathy will be extended to his bereaved relatives. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary Gow, of Ashburnham, and his second wife, who with several children survive him, was Miss Sarah Donnelly of North Monaghan. He was a member of Court Peterborough, Canadian Order of Foresters.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at four o'clock from the family residence, lot 19 North Monaghan.
