    Lanark, Oct. 21 - Saturday evening L. Jackson and George Fair, two young boys from Watson's Corners, seven miles from here, went out partridge hunting. They became separated in the bush, and Jackson returned home alone. A search was at once instituted for young Fair, who was only 13 years of age, and kept up all night, but not until about 4 o'clock Sunday evening was the body found, cold in death, part of his face having been shot off. The supposition is that the gun was discharged in some unaccountable manner. Deceased was the youngest son of Mr. George Fair, sr., Watson's Corners.

    (Medical):Locomotor ataxia is the inability to precisely control one's own bodily movements. People afflicted with this disease may walk in a jerky, non-fluid manner. They will not know where their arms and legs are without looking, but can, for instance, feel and locate a hot object placed against their feet.

    In his study of muscular atrophy, Charcot described the symptoms of locomotor ataxia, a degeneration of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and of the sensory nerve trunks. He was also first to describe the disintegration of ligaments and joint surfaces (Charcot's disease, or Charcot's joint) caused by locomotor ataxia and other related diseases or injuries.

    Tabes dorsalis, also called Progressive Locomotor Ataxia, rare neurologic form of tertiary syphilis, involving sensory deficits, loss of neuromuscular coordination, and diminished reflexes. Symptoms of this form of neurosyphilis chiefly affect the legs and may not appear for more than 25 years after the initial infection. Untreated, tabes dorsalis usually makes unassisted walking impossible and severely debilitates the victim.

    Symptoms result from degeneration of the dorsal roots of the spinal cord, giving it its name, which means "dorsal wasting." The first manifestation is usually "lightning pain," transient, stabbing pains affecting the legs; this is followed by loss of tendon reflexes and by progressive loss of muscular coordination (ataxia) causing a spasmodic, uneven walk. Victims become unable to sense pain, limb position, and temperature; these sensory deficits cause loss of bladder and sometimes bowel control, severe foot ulcerations, and Charcot joints (an osteoarthritis that typically involves the knees and hip). Neurologic deterioration also causes the pupils of the eye to lose their ability to react to changes in light.

    The subject of this sketch was born at the old homestead near Patterson's Lake, in Dalhousie township, about 61 years ago. Her father was Philip Fair and her mother was Ellen Harper. There were six brothers and three sisters in the family who were as follows: James, George, William, Hughie, John, Howard, Mary Jane (Mrs. Alex. Park), and Margaret Edith (Mrs. Robert Paul). There is only one surviving member, and that is Mrs. Shaw who, whith her husband and children, lives at Cornwall.

    Mrs. Paul was married June 26, 1913, and since then has made her home with her husband Robert Paul, in the Elphin community. For a number of years there were in the home Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Paul, and the younger members, Robert and Edith. In 1930 Andrew Paul was called hence and on Dec. 23 1939, Mrs. Robert Paul went to her reward. She was stricken just a few hours before the end, but for some time she had been in an uncertain state of health. Through all the sorrows and afflictions of her life she maintained a cheerful and courageous spirit, acting well her part in every sphere of life and duty.

    A number of years ago she became a member of the Presbyterian church at Elphin and continued to be a consistent and faithful member as long as she lived. She will be greatly missed in the home and in her circle of friends and acquaintainces being as she was, a faithful and helpful companion, a devoted daughter-in-law, and a friend to all.

    The funeral services were held from the home on Tuesday, Dec. 26, and were conducted by Rev. K. McCaskill in the presence of a large number of friends. The following hymns were used. "Lead Kindly Light," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Shall We Gather at the River," and a special number by the choir, "Beyond the Sunset". The body was laid to rest in Crawford's cemetery near the home. The pallbearers were: Dan McDougald, John Nisbet, Hilyard McLean, W.A. Nicol, James Paul and James Smith.

    There were the following floral tributes: wreaths, Bland Shaw and family, Robert Paul; sprays, Mrs. Findlay McLean and Hilyard, Mr. John Paul, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. McLean and Marion, Mrs. George Fair and family, Mrs. Carrie Fair; cut flowers, Mr. and Mrs Eber Walroth, Edith and Evelyn Park.

Ashby, Dear father of Kathleen (Gordon) Stewart of Nepean, Miriam (Lawrence) Wood of Drummond Centre, Dave (Donna) of Perth, Thelma (Delmer) Paul of Elphin, Clarence (Betty) of Clayton, Dorothy (Winston) Purdon of Fallbrooke. Dear brother of Doris Armstrong of Zealand, Elmer Gemmill of Snow Road, Laura McDougald of Elphin, Stanley Gemmill of Perth, and the late George and Gerald Gemmill and Marion Barr.     The community was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Eldred Gemmill on December 17, 1993 at his home hear Elphin. He was born on April 10, 1909 at Watson's Corners, the eldest child of Davidan Marion Gemmill. They moved to a farm in snow Road shortly afterwards. Eldred helped on the family farm as well as working on roads with his horses.

    On October 9, 1936, he married Lila Ashby. Lila was born on October 9, 1905, daughter of William and Ellen Ashby of McDonalds Corners. After living on their farm in Snow Road for three years, they bought a farm near Elphin in 1939 (elsewhere noted - the Delbert Wood farm 1936, and the Dan Geddes farm in 1945) where they spent the rest of their married life. They raised a family of six: Kathleen Stewart, Miriam Wood, Dave Gemmill, Thelma Paul, Clarence Gemmill, and Dorothy Purdon. They had 18 grandchildren an 22 great grandchildren. Lila predeceased Eldred on December 20, 1991 after a lengthy illness.

    Eldred and Lila were both active in the community. They were faithful members of Elphin Presbyterian Church. Eldred was on the Board of Managers and was an Elder of the church for 30 years. Lila was secretary-treasurer for many years and was always willing to help with special activities. She was an auxiliary member of the WMS. They both enjoyed attending Adult Fellowship and Senior Citizen gatherings. They were also directors of the McDonald's Corners Agricultural Society for many years. Eldred was a member of the Oddfellows for 62 years.

    Eldred will be missed by his sisters and brothers, Doris, Laura, Elmer and Stanley. He is predeceased by George, Marion and Gerald. Lila was predeceased by her brother Wilbert.

    Many friends called at Blair and Son Funeral Home and attended their funerals at Elphin Church. The servics were conducted by Rev. Linda Bell. Rev. Steve Stewart read the scriptures for his grandmother. They had six of their grandsons as pallbearers. Burials wer at Crawford Cemetery.

    The family appreciated the many donations to Elphin Church and other charitable organizations in memory of their parents.

    Hilda Geddes - Snow Road Column, Perth Courier

    This community was shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Eldred Gemmill, once a resident of Snow Road on December 17. He died very suddenly at his home. A great many from here attended his visitation at Blairs', Perth, on Sunday, as well as his funeral at Elphin Presbyterian Church at noon on Monday, December 20. Burial was at Crawford's Cemetery, with lunch following at the new Church Hall.

    Eldred will be greatly missed by both family and community. He was born and brought up at Snow Road, went to the school here, and worked on his father's farm until his marriage to Lila Ashby when they purchased the Delbert Wood farm in 1936. They worked this farm until 1945 when they purchased the Dan Geddes farm near the head of Dalhousie Lake. They had a family of six - Kathleen, Miriam, Thelma, Dorothy, David and Clarence, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. Also to his brothers and sisters - Elmer, Stanley, Doris and Laura.
    Eldred was a long-time member of Elphin Presbyterian Church, and of Cornucopia Lodge #299 at Snow Road. He received his 60-year jewel from this Lodge in September 1991. The Oddfellows held their service at Blairs' on Sunday afternoon.

    GEMMILL, David Elmer - D. Elmer spent his entire life at Snow Road Station, where he died peacefully in his 80th year on Sunday, September 4. 1994, surrounded by the love of his family Son of the late David Gemmill and the late Marion Fair Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 51 years, Evelyn Barrie; his children Dale (Mary), Earl (Heather), both of Snow Road. Walter (Marie) of R.R. 4, Perth and Elaine (Bob) Delisle of Elphin. He will be sadly missed by his 11 grandchildren, Rodger (Donna), Scott (Teri Lynn), Cynthia, Teri (Jodi Sweeney), Tracey, Jason, Angie and Erin Gemmill, Haley, Lesley and Ryan Delisle, great-grandchildren Leanna and Brandon. Pre-deceased by an infant grandson in 1976 He was a much loved brother and brother--in-law of Doris (Willis) Armstrong of Zealand, Laura McDougald of Elphin, Stanley (Margaret) of Perth.     The death of Euphemia (Effie) Jamieson of Elgin Street, Almonte, occurred in the Almonte General Hospital on June 8, 1978. after a short illness. She was 83. Mrs Jamieson was born Euphemia McDougall in 1895 at Watson's Corners, the daughter of Hugh McDougall and his wife Elizabeth Fair, both deceased. She attended the Almonte United Church. She married Lester Jamieson on November 27, 1912 at Watson's Corners. Mr Jamieson predeceased his wife. Surviving are one son, Boyd of Almonte; daughters Ilene (Mrs Gordon Russell) of Kingston; Beryl (Mrs Carl Riddell) of Cardinal, and Sisters Ruby (Mrs Ivan Rodger) of Perth and Gertie (Mrs Norman Dowdall) of Carleton Place. Predeceased is a son, Lionel. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral home Almonte at 3.30 p.m. on June 10 to interment in Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev Robert J. McCrea officiated. Pallbearers were Art Robertson, Larry Command, Ross Craig, and three nephews, Leonard, Bill and Mel Dowdall.
