John, his brother Donald and their parents emigrated to Canada about 1845 and settled in North Burgess Township, Lanark County, Canada West where they bought land and became Farmers. Siblings- Donald Abt 1837, Mary Abt 1845, Ann Abt 1847, Catherine Abt 1851, Robert Abt 1865. They attended The Church of Scotland. He married Margaret Helen Oatway 1845-1915, on Oct 23, 1874. They raised six children: Lillian 1877-1975, John James 1879-1958, Angus 1883, William Richard 1886, Henrietta 1888, George Hector 1891-1920. John and his family were Farmers in North Burgess Township, Lanark County, Ontario all his life.

    Family/Spouse: Margaret Helen Oatway. Margaret (daughter of John Oatway and Ellen McRae) was born on 6 Jan 1845 in Burgess North Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died in Jan 1915 in Burgess North Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
