    Died:
The only member of the Perth Fire Department in it's 200 years to lose his life on duty.

    "Fire and Loss of Life.
On the evening of Friday last, 19th inst., about eight o'clock an alarm of fire was given, when it was found that the old Catholic Chapel was in flames. The building had been locked up and unoccupied for some time, and there can be no doubt but the fire was the work of an incendiary, as a pile of pine boards or rails was found inside by those who first entered, in which the fire had been kindled; and an old door was found leaning up against the wall of the building, under one of the windows, which was raised, and through which it was evident the incendiary had made his ingress and egress. The fire engines were speedily on the ground, but the chapel being of wood, and water difficult to be got, the flames had made such headway that it was impossible to save the building, which was burned down; although good service was done in preventing the flames spreading to the adjoining houses. The new English church was at one time in considerable danger. An investigation was held by C. G. Sache, Esq., Coroner and a jury of citizens, but up to the time we write no information has been elicited to the discovery of the guilty party.

It is with extreme regret that we have to add that Mr. George Miller, of the firm of Murray, Miller & Co., of this town, lost his life on the occasion. He was exerting himself to save property, when a heavy piece of burning timber fell out from the building and struck him in the head, crushing him to the ground; and he died the following afternoon in consequence of the injuries he received. He was one of our oldest citizens and was universally esteemed and respected. In losing him, Perth has lost a valuable member of society, and his untimely and melancholy end has cast a gloom on our citizens generally.

A correspondent requests us to add the following: It is due to the memory of the lamented deceased, that during the troublesome times of 1837-'38, that he volunteered and joined the Perth Guards; done duty and was drilled under Col. Fraser, that afterwards, under the same officer, he joined the Perth Volunteers and went to Toronto, Kingston and Gananoque; and during the whole period he set a good example to his associates for steadiness, diligence and zeal for the services, ever ready and cheerfully doing his duty; and that often under difficulties and many unavoidable privations.

The funeral took place on Tuesday and was one of the largest we have ever witnessed in Perth. The Firemen (deceased being a member of No. 2 Co.), appeared in mourning badges, and places of business generally were closed, out of respect for deceased, while the procession was passing. Setting fire to old and unoccupied buildings has been practiced in this town for several years back, until at length the destruction of property has been followed by the destruction of human life. The miscreant who fired the Catholic Chapel has murder resting on his head."

    House Burnt
About half-past two o'clock, on Friday morning, 3rd inst., about an hour later than fires take place in Ottawa, the fire alarm bells pealed out their dreaded notes, awakening the citizens, who hurriedly rushed for the theatre of the fire, which was seen to be in New England. The fire company had their engine out promptly and were soon at the fire, which was found to be confined to a frame building occupied and owned by a man named Miller and his family. When the fire company arrived the building was wholly engulphed in flames, and as no water could be obtained they could put forth no efforts to save the building. The fire is believed to have been caused by the usual means, namely, by hot ashes left in the kitchen. When discovered by the inmates they had just sufficient time to escape with their lives. All household effects were destroyed, and as there was no insurance on the building the loss will be a heavy one to the owner.

    Almonte -
Between 2 and 3:00 on Friday morning last the Almonte fire bell rang out loud and clear, thus giving warning that a fire was in progress. The scene of the fire was situated in "New England". The fire company turned out with their engine but before they could reach the scene the house which was on fire was well night consumed. The house belonged to Mr. Charles Miller, an employee of the factories. From what we can learn the fire was caused by hot ashes which had been placed in an outhouse attached to the building. The house with its contents was entirely consumed and the inmates were not aware of the disaster that had befallen them until some of the burning timbers began falling about their ears. There was no insurance.

    Mr. Robert Miller -
On Sunday, the meancholy news came to the town that Mr. Robert Miller, of Montreal, had died early that morning of paralysis. He had been stricken with paralysis shortly after leaving work on Friday evening, and he survived only till about midnight the next day. The attack was unexpected, and his health had been good prior to that, and the paralytic stroke was wholly unlooked for.

Deceased was born in Perth sixty-six years ago, of Scotch parents, and lived in this town until about twenty-five years ago, when he left for Toronto, but ultimately removbed to Montreal, where he had a position as a machinist with his brothers, Messrs Mitchell Bros.

He was married to Miss Christina Brown, also of this town, and she with one son, Willie, and tree daughters, one married (Mrs. James Thomson), survives. His remains were brought to Perth for burial in elmwood cemetery, Rev. D. Currie, of Knox church, conducting the services.

Mr. Miller's father, George Miller, was killed while acting as a fireman at the burning of the old Roman Catholic church about 1832. He had a machine shop in town, and his firm built the old Fountain fire-engine, the first of its kind in Perth.

    DEATHS
At Almonte, on Friday, June 23rd, Charles B. Miller, in his 66th year.

1916, Friday June 30, The Almonte Gazette page 4
    DEATH'S HARVEST
    Obit ? Mr C.B. Miller
The rider of the White Horse has again entered an Almonte home, and borne away the spirit of its head. Mr Chas B. Miller had for some time suffered from ailment which refused to respond to skill and care, and on Friday, June 23rd, he passed away in his 66th year. The late Mr Miller, who was born in Perth, came to Almonte with his father about the year 1869 or 70, and has since had his home here. He served his apprenticeship as machinist in a foundry and machine shop on the site of the Almonte Knitting Co's present factory, and afterwards was employed in various capacities along that line of work.

On November 25th, 1879, he was married to Miss Helen McQuarrie, who, with members of the family born to them, is still living. These are Charles, who had been in the west but returned home before his father's death, Thos, Agnes, Nellie and Jean. One brother of the deceased, Mr Thos Miller, of Toronto, survives. Two sisters, (Mrs W.A. Toshack and Agnes) and one brother, (James), are dead.

The late Mr Miller was for many years a member of Mississippi Lodge A.F. & A.M., and was at his death the oldest past master of the lodge. The funeral, on Sunday afternoon, was held under Masonic auspices, and there was not only a large turn out of members of the local lodge, but others were as visiting brethren. Rev S.G. Brown conducted service at the house, which was followed by the burial service of the lodge, and also took part in the service at the grave. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful.

Charles married Helen McQuarrie on 25 Nov 1879 in Adamston Twp, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. Helen (daughter of James McQuarrie and Catherine Leishman) was born on 22 Aug 1855 in Ramsay Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 5 Dec 1939 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. DEATHS
At Almonte, on Tuesday, 31 July, James R. Miller, aged 23 years

1883, Friday August 3, The Almonte Gazette page 3
OBITUARY -- To chronicle the death of the aged from time to time is an unavoidable necessity, however painful it may be, but the painful feelings are intensified when it becomes the duty of the journalist to record the death of the young and promising, as we have to do this week in announcing the death of Mr Jas R. Miller, so well and widely known from his connection as clerk in Wylie's store. The disease which carried him off was inflammation of the bowels with which his naturally strong and vigourous constitution battled for nearly a fortnight, hope and fear alternately predominating; but alas! the disease proved the victor, and on Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock the end came, and a loving son, an affectionate brother, a pleasant companion and a faithful servant was no more. His pleasant face and obliging manners will be missed at the store. The large number of people from town and country who turned out to attend the funeral, which took place yesterday, was ample evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by all. The family, and especially the bereaved mother. have the deep sympathy of the public.
