    Died:
Anna Mabel Scott, resident of Belmont, died on March 3, 2011. She was born April 20, 1921 in Govan, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Wilard H. Scott and Clara A. Alford.

Anna immigrated to the U.S. to Burlingame, CA in 1923. She attended Central Grammar School, San Mateo Union High School, and San Mateo Junior College. She graduated with a B.A. Degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1942.

Anna was a member of the first group of women to be selected to the U.S. Navy Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). She served in the 12th Naval District, San Francisco, before being sent overseas to the Naval Aviation Supply Depot, Pearl Harbor, HA. Her next tour of duty was at the security office of the Joint Research Development Board in Washington, D.C. There she met many of the members of the Los Alamos, N.M. scientific community. Other tours of duty were: Communications, Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard, S.F. during the Korean Conflict; in the Classification Office of Personnel, 6th Naval District, Charleston, S.C.; and finally as Separations Officer at Treasure Island Naval Station, S.F. Anna was released from duty in 1956, but continued to serve her country in the Naval Reserve. She retired as a Lt. Commander.

Anna attended San Jose State College, receiving her library credential in 1953. Her career as a librarian started at San Carolos High School, and concluded after sixteen years, with the San Mateo County Library as a Reference Coordinator.

She has been a resident of San Mateo County since 1923 and a resident of Belmont, CA, since 1936. She has been a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Belmont, CA, since 1937.

She enjoyed researching the family genealogy, traveling, and doing exquisite needle- point work. She was an avid reader, as all librarians are; a long time patron of the San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Symphony, and the Best of Broadway theater. She also supported the local Peninsula theaters as well.

She leaves behind two families; her own relatives who shall miss her stories, and a warm and wonderful second adopted family in Maryland with whom she was friends for over 55 years.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 29th at 7 pm at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 1300 Fifth Ave., Belmont, CA 94002. Family and friends are welcome to join us for a reception following the service in the church parish hall. Those wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers, please donate to the following organization(s) that are close to Anna's heart: Belmont Library, 1110 Alameda de Las Pulgas, Belmont, CA 94002, Attn: Kathleen Beasley or to San Mateo County Genealogical Society, PO Box 5569, Redwood City, CA 94063.
