    Notes:

Dad's database had Mary Ann. Mom's notes, based on Grandma's notes indicate 'Elizabeth' Gillespie, from near Brockville, ON. It also indicates that they were married in Caleraine, Ireland and later lived in Pennsylvania where Grandma's Grandmother had a large dry goods store. It was thought they were United Empire Loyalists. Her Grandfather had been in the American War, and subsequently was in poor health and died at age 49 of lung trouble.

    Died:
Son of John Gillespie and Jane Lees.
    ------------------------------------
James Gillespie, Sr., the veteran ore sampler for the Empire Steel & Iron Company, passed away at 6.30 o'clock this morning at his home, No. 317 Church Street, aged 69 years, 10 months and 23 days. Mr. Gillespie suffered from stomach trouble for some time, but he was able to attend to his duties at the Crane furnaces until last Sunday. He was able to be about, however, and last evening he took a walk as had been his custom.

At midnight Mr. Gillespie's condition became serious and he lapsed into a state of unconsciousness, in which condition he remained to the end. The members of his family were at his bedside when he expired. The announcement of Mr. Gillespie's death came as a shock to the entire community, especially to his sfellew-employes [sic] at the furnaces, by all of whom he was held in high regard.

The funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his late home, Rev. C. H. Miller, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Gillespie was a member, officiating. Interment will be made in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery.

The deceased was born at Castle Rock, County Dery, Ireland, on September 21, 1844, a son of Mrs. Jane and the late James Gillespie. He came to America after the close of the Civil War, and started work for the Crane Iron Company, later absorbed by the Empire Steel & Iron Company, and was continuously in the service of the company for 48 years. He was the ore sampler for James Gayley, the first chemist for the Crane Iron Works, later vice president of the United States Steel Corporation, and was sent to a number of States to sample ores, being considered one of the best in the country. He was able to go along a train of ore cars and judge their value in iron as accurately as any chemist. He sampled ores for Leonard Peckitt, president of the Empire Steel & Iron Company; Howard Knauss, superintendent of the Emaus furnaces, and Milton Knauss, superintendent of the Crane iron works, while tney were chemists at the local furnaces, and for E. J. Lynch, chief chemist of the Empire. Mr. Gillespie died less than 24 hours after his neighbor and life-long friend, Andrew Johnson, a veteran furnaceman [Find A Grave Memorial# 191502470].

Mr. Gillespie was united in marriage thirty-nine years ago to Miss Mary Clugston, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Dr. Cornelius Earle, then pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The union was blessed with 12 children, two of whom died in infancy, Besides his bereaved wife he is survived by these children, Robert of Summit Hill, Daniel Gillespie, overseer of the Catasauqua water plant, Mrs. Oliver J. Benvenuti, James B., John, William, Stanley, George and Miss Myrtle Gillespie of this piace, and Charles Gillespie of Jamesville, N. Y. Fifteen grandchildren, and his mother, who is 94 years old, and a sister, Margaret the last two named living in Ireland....

Margaret seems to be in the employ of George and Helen Loftus, a labourer, born Ireland. There also seems to be a servant, Christina, age 30 in addition to Margaret, aged 15. It may be that the Loftus were also in the employ of Joseph Philips, a shoemaker and his wife Harriet.

The following entry is for William Kingsley, Clerk and Lady Elizabeth, from England, both aged 29 and married in 1856. Although less likely, it may be that they were the employers.

My Grandma, Mary Ann, was a very strong woman both physically and mentally. I've always understood that she was a real pioneer, helped Grandpa build the two story log house which still stands and is lived in . She was a midwife and nurse to many of the neighbours, grew a most bountiful garden, loved to read books, and could do all kinds of handiwork, knitting, crocheting, etc.

(Research):Check Census 1881 to see if she worked for Samuel Bolton.

    ?b?Friday 4 Dec 1909 Bathurst Council Page 3 column 5 Perth Courier
?/b?. . . Wm. Ashby and Jas. Anderson reported that certain parties had cut timber on the 10?sup?th?/sup? line, possession of which was claimed by Messrs. Ashby and Anderson in lieu of the forced road across their property. The Council advised them to have the line traced out across the land in question in order to protect their interests. . . .

    Died:
?b?24 Aug 1923 Obituary page 4 column 3 Perth Courier
?/b?Ashby - At an early hour on Saturday morning, August 18?sup?th?/sup?, after a lingering illness, death came to Mr. William Ashby in the War Memorial Hospital, Perth, where he had gone for treatment a few weeks previously.
Deceased, who was in his 38?sup?th?/sup? year, enlisted for overseas service in the 130?sup?th?/sup? Lanark and Renfrew Battalions in December 1915, and while in camp in England was transferred to the 3?sup?rd?/sup? Canadian Battalion. He went over to France in November 1916 and served in the trenches until January 23?sup?rd?/sup? of the following year, when in answer to call for volunteers to join a bombing party in the Vimy section he offered his services and during the night of above received a number of wounds, one of which resulted in the loss of an eye. He was invalided home in September 1917 and since then has been in failing health. Thus, another name is added to the list making eight in all from McDonald's Corners who gave their lives for King and Country. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Ellen Duncan, he leaves to mourn his loss two children, Lila and Wilbert: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ashby of Fallbrook; three brothers, Robert of Fallbrook; Archie and Russell in the west; and four sisters - Mrs. John Lake of Lanark; Mrs. John Mathers (sic) of Braeside; Mrs. Dan Nichols of Carleton Place and Maggie at home.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. A.M. Little in Knox Church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock and very largely attended. Among those in attendance were Lieut. Col. T.R. Caldwell, O.B.E.; Major J.A. Hope, D.S.O. M.C.; Lieut. W.R. Strike; Flight-Lieut. F.K. Hope; Bandmaster Keays and Philip Kelly, representing the Lanark and Renfrew Battalion and G.W.V.A. The body was borne to its last resting space in the Highland Cemetery and after the burial service the Last Post was sounded by Bandmaster Keays of Perth. Members of Court Stewart, No. 481, C.O. F., of Fallbrook were the pallbearers. Among the numerous floral offerings laid upon the bier was a wreath from Court Stewart of which deceased was a member. Much sympathy is felt for the family in their sad bereavement. -Era.

    Notes:

Isobella Ashby was a noted tailor/dressmaker/seamstress who worked for a number of families in the Lanark area. She initially trained in Perth. Her diaries provide some insight into life during the years on the Balderson farm when the family was growing up.

(Research):?u?Notes from interview with Grandpa (John Cumming) Mather.

?/u?Grandma (Bella) had a grade 3 education. When she was 12 she was babysitting for income. Her older sister, Elizabeth Ruth, a twin of Bob, died of black diptheria. Two others in the family also died of Diptheria. They lived on the Jack Anderson place (Mary Scott's Grandparents?) on the edge of Fallbrook, ON. They were Baptists (Lanark Congregation). They are buried in the Playfairville cemetery, attended St. Peter's Anglican Church and the Methodist Church later.

?u?Telephone call with Gordon Mather December 2015
?/u?About 1916 Grandma had a head injury from a hay fork. For the following year they lived with the Mather family on the Cameron farm near Balderson. Her limp was the result of brain damage arising from this accident. In the early 1930's Grandma suffered from blackouts when she would not recognize the children, Gordon and Evelyn(age 9-10). These blackouts led to a month or more in a Kingston hospital for treatment of the head injury.
After she passed away, Grandpa was surprised to learn that she still had money invested from her seamstress/tailor days and there was considerable income tax to pay on the amount. She had used war bonds and later government bonds to accumulate this money.
Grandma had three years of schooling obtained after a 2 mile walk to the nearest school. As the oldest girl in the family she left school to care for younger children. At approx age of 12 she was hired as a mother's helper by another family - a Mrs. Anderson in Falbrook. At approximately age 14 she moved to Perth where she apprenticed with Mrs. Lyons to gain her sewing skills. She worked for a number of families along the Scotch Line near Perth where she moved from household to household with her sewing machine and equipment/supplies. The Poole family was one of these families. She made clothing for men, women and children.
She would piece quilts during the summer and in the winter she would set up a quilt frame in the parlour. She frequently used her 'rag bag' for fabric for these quilts so it is probable that the woolen fabric in the quilts I remember were scraps from her days as a seamstress.

(Research):Archie attended Kingston Dairy School in Kingston ON before travelling to Edmonton in 1918, He worked at the Woodland Dairy and Edmonton City Dairy before moving to Rossington where he opened a cheese factory across from the Rossington store. While there, he lived on the Brownlie place in a log house on the banks of the Pembina River (NW1/4-14-60-1-W5th). Water was drawn from the Pembina River and there was a lake on the other side of the house.

The family moved to Westlock where Archie worked as a cream tester at the Westlock Creamery. After leaving the creamery they moved two miles east of Westlock to the Edison District where Archie farmed and started a dairy business, Rich Valley Dairy, deliverying milk in Westlock. He later moved two and and half miles west of Westlock (Edison district, on banks of Wabsh R.)) where he farmed and carried on his dairy business (Rich Valley Dairy). Milk was delivered seven days a week, and when short, would return to town (Westlock) after the evening milking to make up for the daytime delivery shortage. During his years of milk delivery he collected over 350 bottles from Canadian and USA towns. He gave the collection to Dick Adkins and were displayed at Dick's mini-museum on hwy 18 west of Westlock for many years.

Archie originally had a herd of Jersey cows and later switched to Holsteins.

After 35 years, Archie retired from the Dairy business in 1959 when he sold to the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool.

Archie and his family lived on the banks of the Wabush until his death in 1964. His wife Thelma continued to live there with her family until her death in 1974. In 1984 their daughters Eileen and Lonetta continued to live there with their husbands.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Ashby, of Bathurst, (near Fallbrook), was plunged into sorrow on Monday by the death by drowning of their thirteen-month old daughter. The little one had been out of its parents sight scarcely three minutes, but during that time had fallen into a firkin of water outside the door, and when discovered life was extinct. More than their share of trouble has fallen to the lot of Mr. and Mrs. Ashby, as only about four years ago three of their little ones were taken away in a brief period by diphtheria. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to the cemetery at Playfair.

    Died:
At She Passed Away ln Hospital at North Bay
    Lanark Era
On May 16th Deaconess Edith M Heffron, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs William Heffron passed peacefully away to the spirit world. Her death, which took place in North Bay General Hospital, was a sorrowing shock to her many friends as none thought the end was so near.

Edith Heffron was born at Fallbrook March 21st 1889. While yet in her teens she gave her heart and life to Jesus during the pastorate of Rev Mr Murray. Eight year ago she offered her services to the Methodist church to train for deaconess work. She spent two years on probation and during-this time she attended the Deaconess Training School in Toronto. She was then ordained to the office of deaconess. The next four years were spent in Victoria BC, where she did most valiant service proving beyond any doubt her fitness and the wisdom of her choice of professlon. In September 1917 she was stationed at North Bay and, until tqken ill last October, she had rendered most effective service as she went about doing all the good she possibly could. She was smitten with the terrible flu. Pleurisy developed and In spite of the best of attention she was unable to regain her health and bade farwell and answered the call to that higher service.

She died as she had lived, unselfishly she gave her life for others. Wherever she was known she was highly regarded and greatly beloved. All through her life she reflected a cheerful spirit and seemed to live that she might make sunshine for others. Her sweet submission and patience was a great inspiration to all who knew her. Her death is a distinct loss to the church she so dearly loved. She was one greatly devoted to her church and In her early years attended not only the regular church services but took an active part in the Sunday school work. Her faithfulness will ever be an inspiration to those who remain.

Last Friday evening a memorial service was held for deceased in North Bay Methodist church. The body was brought to her home in Lanark village and on Sunday the funeral services were conducted by the Methodist minister Rev J W Shier assisted by Rev J W Shier assisted by Rev J C MacLeod of the Presbyterian church. The pall bearers were: Messrs R Shillington, Ed Shilllngton, William Cameron, Lyman Playfair, Allle Stewart and William H McFarlane. Beautlful floral offerings adorned the casket and consisted of a pillow from North Buy Methodist church; wreaths from Lanark Methodist church, King's Daughters of North Bay Methodist church, Miss Bailey's Sunday school class of North Bay, Mr and Mrs Donald Cameron, Earnest and parents. A very large concourse of friends and acquaintances assembled for the funeral services which testified to the respect in which deceased was held. Besides her parents and a host of friends she leave to mourn her loss two brothers ? Ernest of Kingston and Frank at home ? and three sisters? Mrs Donald Cameron of Flower Station, Mabel and Elsie at home. The deepest sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family.
