    the Halpennys, the Chamneys, the James, the Hopkins, the Codds, the Twamleys, the Jacksons, the Dowdalls had all been members of a single (Church of Ireland i.e. Anglican) church in Ireland - St. Michael's Church in Aghold Parish in Wicklow County near the villages of Shillelagh and Coolkenno, and the town of Tullow just across the County Carlow border.
    To this day, St. Michael's church ministers to members of these same families - who at the turn of the nineteenth century were served by Rector - James McGhee. Yet, the family members who came between 1820 and 1823 had largely become Wesleyan Methodists.
    Records of St. Michael's are, unfortunately, partial, and in some cases - missing - but they often mention some of the above-named emigrants specifically - and while there are no apparent Boyds, McCreerys or McGees - who were said to have come from Armagh - clearly the Lanark County community had been laergely built around these former members of St. Michael's - in Wicklow.

    To the right is a painting I did of St. Michael's Church as it might have looked when my ancestors attended here in the early 19th Century.
    Below is one of several pages which list, among others, the families who emigrated. On this fascinating (to me) page we see the marriage of Edward Chamney to Jane Twamley in 1762, the baptism of their son, John a year later and the baptism of Lancelot and Abigail Jackson's daughter Margaret. We also see a plethora of Codds , Chamneys, Twamleys and Halpennys, whose families had been caught up in the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
    Rector James McGhee had, in 1798, led a valiant defense of the embattled Protestant community, a Captain Chamney had lost his life alongside Halpennys, Codds and Twamleys - who had also died in the fighting.     W. G. HALPENNY, OLD TIMER OF MINNEDOSA.DIES

    Word has been received In the city of the death In the Minnedosa district, Manitoba, of William George Halpenny, old-timer of that district and brother of R. E. Halpenny, Dominion fruit inspector, of Regina. Mr. Halpenny died Saturday morning at the home of his brother, J. W. Halpenny, in the Cameron district, in his 68th year. He was well known in the district having lived and worked there for a number of years. He was apparently not suffering from any illness at the time of his death. The funeral was held from Cameron United church, Monday afternoon, and burial made in Minnedosa cemetery.

    After an illness of only one week Henry Nelson Halpenny died at Mlnnedosa. aged 60 years. He is survived bv his widow and two daughters, one Mrs. C. C. Heard, of Winnipeg, and the other. Miss Florence, at home.

    Mr. Halpenny was born tn Pertb county, Ont., in 1866. and came with hls parents to Manitoba In 1884; they were among the first settlers In the Mlnnedosa district, residing a short distance east of the town. He married Miss Nellie Bolton. 33 years ago, and carried on business in Mlnnedoaa for many years. Hla death Is the first break In a family of five brother and four sisters. Mrs. Herbert Halpenny, of Winnipeg, is a sister.

    Robert Edmund Halpenny, 85, suite 1, Lorscott apartment, died in a Regina hospital Monday Mr Halpenny was born in Lanark county, and when 15 was brought to Minnedosa, Man. He finished his schooling there, and in 1893 he opened his own fruit confectionery store at Minnedosa.

    In 1911 he sold out and went on the road as a commercial traveller. He made his headquarteis in Winnipeg and Edmonton and came to Regina 28 years ago. He retired 1938. His work was mainly with Dominion department of agriculture, fruit and vegetable division

    He married Eva King, of Owen Sound, at Minnedosa in 1914. She survives him with two children. Jean at home, and Lloyd, 2880 Athol street. A brother Fred,' Minnedosa, and two sisters, Mrs W Sirrett, Minnedosa and Mrs Sarah Halpenny, Winnipeg

    Mr Halpenny was a Mason for many years and more than 50 years an Oddfellow He was formerly active in the Northwest Commercial Travellers association and m the United Commercial Travellers.

    Former Bawlf Resident Passes in Edmonton

    Mrs. Harriet Elizabeth Hanna passed away Friday, Aug. 24th at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 16 days. She was born at Innisfree [sic], Ontario, on April 8th, 1870. In 1885 she moved with her family to Minnedosa, Man., and there in 1895 she was united in marriage to George Thomas Hanna.

    In 1913 they came to Bawlf and a few years later they moved to their farm in the Kelsey district. Four years ago she moved to Edmonton where she resided until her death. Mr. Hanna predeceased her in 1944.

    She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Harris and Russel, of Edmonton; three daughters, Mary (Mrs. Len Blades), of Ohaton; Erna (Mrs. H. McKenzie), of New Westminster, B.C.; Clara Lynn of Edmonton; five grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters; Robert Halpenny of Regina; Fred Halpenny of Minnedosa, Man.; Mrs. Kathrine Sirett of Minnedosa, Man. and Mrs. Sarah Halpenny of Winnipeg.

    Funeral services were held in the Andrews-McLaughlin Chapel, Edmonton, on Wednesday, Aug. 29. Rev. T.L. Jackson officiated. Interment took place in the family plot in the Camrose cemetery.
