    The Edmonton Milling Company is also significant because of its association with Robert Ritchie who arrived in Strathcona in 1892. Within a year he had built and began operating the flour mill and added elevators in 1895 and 1905. Ritchie also served in local politics as alderman, school trustee, justice of the peace and in 1906 as mayor of Strathcona. The Edmonton Milling Company is also significant as a prominent visual landmark on the south edge of the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Its tall profile was readily visible from Edmonton across the river valley and as a landmark signified the end of the Calgary and Edmonton railway line in Strathcona.

    Died:
    Robert Ritchie came west to Strathcona from Ontario in 1891 to help his brother establish the Ritchie Flour Mill, later known as the Edmonton Milling Company and the North West Mill and Feed Company. It was located on Saskatchewan Drive and 103 Street, adjacent to where the Calgary to Edmonton railway ended. Robert's brother John had built the mill in 1891. Their firm won government contracts to supply flour to Indian reserves, and it was often freighted on rafts (built by John Walter) along the North Saskatchewan, Athabasca and Peace Rivers.

    Robert Ritchie's mill was fitted with the latest equipment and though the business consumed much of his time, he was also involved in the community. He built the Chapman Bros building on Whyte Avenue, served a term as Strathcona's mayor, was on the Public School Board in 1899 and 1906-07, and was Justice of the Peace in 1905. He and his wife Sarah Louisa (1845-1927) were charter members of Strathcona Baptist Church and had seven children. Today their original house still stands at 10910-84 Avenue.

    Died:
    Dr. Gibson is a native of Canada, and a product of one of the best medical schools of that nation. He was born in Perth. Lanark county, Ontario, February 3, 1866, a son of John and Mary (Scott) Gibson.
    The partenal grandfather was John Gibson, who married Agnes Murray. On both sides the family is of Scotch ancestry. The grandfather was a merchant in Scotland, in the town of Dumfries, and after transferring his home to Canada followed farming. Both he and his wife attained a good old age before their death, and in their family were the following named children: William, James, Andrew. John, Mary, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Maggie.
    Andrew Gibson, of this family, after graduating from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, practiced medicine successfully for several years in Clinton, Ontario. He then took a post graduate course in London, and Edinburgh and then settled in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he enjoyed for about fifteen years a very lucrative and extensive practice. His death was caused by typhoid fever. William and Annie (Harkness) Scott, the maternal grandparents of Dr. Gibson, had the following children: Edward, Matthew, James, John, Thomas, Mary, Mina, Maggie and Annie. The parents both lived to between seventy and eighty years of age.
