    WILLIAM M. LAMBIE
    Death of One of Theresa's Best Known Citizens and Business Men.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Theresa, Aug. 4.? At 3:30 Wednesday afternoon occurred the death of William M. Lambie, who for nearly 30 years has been one of Theresa's Foremost and best beloved citizens. His death was not unexpected, as it has been known for many weeks that his sickness was likely to prove fatal.
    Mr. Lambie was born in Hammond, St. Lawrence county, April 22, 1834. His parents were John Lambie, a native of Paisley, Scotland, who emigrated to this-country in 1821, and whose wife was Ellen Morris, a native of Glasgow. Their children were Mrs. Christiana Blackmon, of Hammond, the late Mrs. Margaret Gardner, of Hammond, William M., Robert, deceased, Jane, deceased, John F. Lambie, of Northampton, Mass., the late Jasper Lambie, ex-mayor of Northampton, and Mrs. Martha Manchester, of Easthampton, Mass.
    Mr. Lambie was married Jan. 11, 1871, to Octavia, only daughter of the late Horatio Still, who survives him. Mr. Lambie was engaged for a few years in the furniture and undertaking business at Redwood and in 1870, in company with his brother, John F., embarked in the dry goods trade at Theresa. They immediately became successful and by strict integrity and pure methods of business Avon the confidence of the people far and near. About 15 years ago his brother discontinued business here and entered into partnership with Jasper Lambie at Northampton and during the past ten years George Blackman, a nephew, has been the junior member of the firm of William M. Lambie & Co. Mr. Lambie has held the office of president of the village, and at his death and since its organization has been the president of the Theresa cemetery association. He was one of the promoters of the Theresa high school, and in him was always found a friend to every public interest.
    He was a member of the Presbyterian church here and one of its most useful and consistent workers, and his purity of heart and rectitude of conduct gave dally evidence of the character of the man. For nearly 30 years he has been an active member of Theresa lodge, No. 174, F. and A. M., and Theresa chapter, No. 149. R. A. M. He constantly held offices of trust in both these bodies and was at one time high priest of the chapter, and was always present at its convocations if possible, and was ever ready to perform even the humblest service in the interests of the craft. When the embers of the old Masonic hall were still burning in April 1800, he formulated a plan for a new hall, which took form and became a handsome reality after his ideas and by his energy. The present generation will not cease to miss him and mourn his departure from among us. His wife, his brother, John F., his sister, Mrs. Manchester, his physician, and his pastor, Rev. Charles G. Cady (Gady?) were present when death came to his relief.
    The funeral will occur today at 1:30 p.m. from his late home in this village and the interment will be by his Masonic brethren, whom he loved so well, at Oakwood cemetery.
    - A Masonic Funeral at Hammond ?
    Theresa, Nov. 22. ? The funeral of Robert M. Lambie, whose sudden death in New York on Thursday last was noticed in the Times, occurred at Hammond, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. Otis Gardner, on Sunday, the 20th, at 2 P.M. His brother, John F. Lambie, had accompanied the remains from New York arriving at Hammond on Saturday morning. The deceased was a Free Mason, was a member of the Ionic lodge, of Easthampton, Mass., and was the first Mason initiated into that lodge upon its organization about 25 years ago. By the request of his friends, the funeral was attended by Theresa lodge, No. 147, F. and A.M., and was under the direction of Worthy Brother P.B. Salsbury, assisted by Brother J.R. Sturtevant.
    Rev. D.H. Furguson, of Hammond, opened the church service with scripture and prayer and made a short and very appropriate address. "Nearer My God to Thee," and "My Jesus, as Thou Wilt" were sung by the choir, who were personal friends of the family. The full Masonic ceremonies followed and the interment took place at the pretty little cemetery at South Hammond. The six brothers and sisters of the deceased were present, viz: Ex-Mayor Jasper L. Lambie, John F. Lambie and Mrs. Manchester, of Northampton; Mr. Wm. M. Lambie and wife of Theresa, and Mrs. Fred Blackmon and Mrs. Otis Gardner, of Hammond, besides other near relatives.
    Mr. Lambie was 56 years old and never married. He was a gentleman of much refinement, and commanded the respect and esteem of all who knew him. The following resolutions were adopted by the committee appointed by the lodge for that purpose:
    Whereas, The Supreme Architect of the universe, having been pleased to remove our brother, Robert M. Lambie, from this life to a life of endless duration, be it, therefore,
    Resolved, That we sincerely and deeply mourn the lost, while we bow in humble submission to the will of Him who gave and who hath the right and power to take away.
    Resolved, That, as we recognize the many manly virtues and excellent traits of character of the deceased, we will endeavor to emulate them.
    Resolved, That we Denver our fraternal sympathy to ionic lodge in the loss which they have sustained, in the death of a member of whom they may well be proud; that we express our profound sorrow and sympathy to the kindred of our brother in their deep affliction.
    Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the minutes, published in the county papers, a copy sent to Ionic lodge, and also to the several near relatives of the deceased.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    DEATH OF JASPER E. LAMBIE

    Formerly Mayer of Northampton and For Many Years a Prosperous Merchant There
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Jasper E. Lambie, a former mayor of Northampton, died at his home in Phillips place in that city yesterday morning at 8:30. The long and tedious course of his illness, which was of paralytic nature, grieved his friends, who deeply sympathized with him and his family. The first approach of the insidious attack was observed two years ago, and for several moths past he had not been able to leave the house.
    Jasper E. Lambie was born in Hammond, N.Y., in 1843. His grandfather was engaged in the manufacture of the famous Paisley shawls and it was from Paisley, Scot., that his father immigrated to New York state. The children of his father, John Lambie, were Jane, Robert M., Mrs. Margaret Gardner and Jasper E., who have died, and Christina, a widow of F. W. Blackmore (sic) of Hammond, William M. and John F. of Northampton, and Martha M., wife of George L. Manchester, of Easthampton.
    After graduating from the public schools, J.E. Lambie attended Gouverneur academy and St. Lawrence University in New York State. In August, 1864, he joined the 91st New York volunteer infantry. He was stationed at Baltimore in the commissary muster department and remained there during the war. In 1866, Mr. Lambie and his brother Robert opened a dry goods store in Easthampton and this business J.E. Lambie continued for a number of years after his brother had removed to New York. In 1833, Mr. Lambie bought out the business of E. G. Southwick & Co. in Northampton, and three years later took his brother John into partnership.
    Almost immediately Mr. Lambie took a position as one of the most enterprising and successful merchants of the Meadow city. It was not long before the firm built at the rear of the Southwick block, which they occupied, a block more than twice as large as the one which fronted on the street. The whole of the first floor of the united blocks has been used for the sales department, and so large a stock has been kept in the commodious basement that the firm found itself called upon to do quite a wholesale trade with the surrounding towns. There has been constant increase in the large and successful business.
    Mr. Lambie's political career was not a long one, but it was sufficient to make him mayor of the city and to give him some state prominence at one time as a man adapted in every way and very favorably spoken of for the governor's council. In 1889 and 1890 he served the city efficiently in the board of aldermen and in the fall of 1890 was nominated the republican candidate for mayor against John B. O'Donnell, the democratic nominee. Both were strong men and each had a large following. Mr. Lambie won by a majority of 262 votes, the largest majority ever given a mayor in the city, except that which Mr. O'Donnell received two years later, which was exactly as large. Mr. Lambie gave a sound, conservative and business like administration. The following year Mr. Lambie and Mr. O'Donnell were again the nominees of their respective parties, and this time Mr. O'Donnell won by three votes. Mr. Lambie always cherished the honor which belonged to him as a veteran of the civil war and was always interested in the proceedings of W. L. Baker Grand Arm post, of which he was a member. He was a Mason, belonging to Northampton chapter, and he held the office of master of Ionic lodge of Easthampton.
    Of his personal qualities as a man and citizen, nothing but the highest praise could be spoken. He maintained a poise and dignity of bearing that was undisturbed by the cares of business or office. He manifested enterprise without a trace of flurry or bluster and showed that a man can be successful in business without any neglect of courtesy or kindliness. He held his friends by a genuine stability of character, by unfailing good will and unimpeachable integrity. In his death the city not only loses a strong man, but the people lose a beloved friend.
    Mr. Lambie married Henrietta E. Bryan, daughter of Dr. Bryan of New York, in 1975. She survives him, with two children, Margaret, aged 11, and Morris, aged nine. Three other children died in early youth. He was a member of the Unitarian church. The funeral will be held at the Unitarian church tomorrow at 3 o'clock, Dr. G. C. Cressey officiating.
    Family/Spouse: Henrietta Eliza Bryan. Henrietta was born on 26 Sep 1861 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, United States; died on 7 Mar 1932 in District of Columbia, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
    Died:
    Eulogy, in part, for Morris Lambie, written and presented by Reverend Robert B. Day, D.D.
    The character of Morris Lambie was, of course, distinguished by many other qualities than purity of heart and generosity of spirit. Nothing, however, would be more alien to his taste than to proceed farther than we have gone along such lines. And yet, it would be a deplorable omission to bring this brief tribute to a close without mentioning his very genuine enthusiasm for life, his stout heart, and the sense of dedication to the true and the good which, in the sunset of his years, took him very nearly to the other side of the world.
    College days at Williamstown were happy for days for Morris Lambie. And before that his happy, wholesome boyhood in the city of Northampton. There it was he met the companion and helpmeet of the years that followed. Years of study abroad succeeded by his career as a teacher and a public servant first at the University of Minnesota, subsequently for twenty years at Harvard ? and in the home stretch a term or two aft Tufts. Toward all these institutions, let it be said, he had the deepest loyalty.
    Word was received by Dr. Morris Lambie, 36 Lake Street, of the death of his father, Dr. Morris B. Lambie, 73, who died in Jordan where he was halfway through a year's assignment on the faculty of Bir Zeit college. The body will be returned to the United States and burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass. A memorial service has been tentatively set for Friday at Cambridge.
    Dr. Lambie was born at Northampton, Mass., March 29, 1888 and was graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass, with the class of 1910. Mr. Lambie was an outstanding athlete at Williams. He completed postgraduate studies at Harvard University where he received his Ph. D. degree. Following infantry service in the first World War, Dr. Lambie taught at the University of Minnesota, where he was professor of government from 1921 to 1934. He also served as relief administrator for the state of Minnesota during the early 1930's. In 1934 he returned to Harvard as professor of government in the Littauer School of Public Administration, continuing at that post until his retirement under Harvard's age limitations eight years ago. Dr. Lambie then taught at Boston University, Tufts, and Boston College, prior to leaving last August for a year on the faculty of Bir Zeit college, which is partly financed by the U. S. Government, the Ford Foundation and the government of Jordan.
    Surviving besides his son, Morris, are a son, James W. Lambie, of Lexington, Mass, a sister, Miss Margaret Lambie of Washington, D. C. and five grandchildren.
