    Note: Rev. Samuel Schwerdtfeger and his wife were not interred in this cemetery, but this stone was moved here when the original Lutheran Church was flooded by the Seaway in the 1950s.

    THE REV. JOHANN SAMUEL SCHWERDTFEGER

    The first Lutheran minister to settle in this province, Schwerdtfeger was born in Burgbernheim, Bavaria, and studied theology at the University of Erlangen. Emigrating to America in 1753, he served as pastor of congregations in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York. Much persecuted for his allegiance to the Crown during the American Revolution, Schwerdtfeger moved to Canada in 1791. He settled here in Williamsburg Township and became pastor of a congregation of German Loyalists, which had been established in 1784, and by 1790 had constructed the first Lutheran church in what is now Ontario. Its site now lies beneath Lake St. Lawrence. Within a few years he had organized Lutheran congregations in neighbouring townships. He died in 1803 and was buried in the old church cemetery.

    Roderick Weagent, one of Minot's respected citizens, died Tuesday morning at 10:45 after a long illness from lung trouble. He contracted a cold about a year ago and has been declining ever since. The remains have been shipped to Grafton, where tomorrow the funeral will be held, and the internment take place.

    The decedent was born at Perth, Ont., in April, 1834 and was 72 years old when he died. In 1857 he moved to Minnesota and in 1879 he located at Fargo. Three years later he moved to Grafton where he resided until about four years ago when he came to this city to reside with his daughter Christina. His wife died about five years ago. Mr. Weagent was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Grafton. He was a kind neighbor, a good Christian man and leaves hundreds of friends in Minot to mourn for him. He leaves five children who are: Mrs. John McJannett, Misses Caroline and Christina Weagent, and Charles Weagent, of Minot. Mrs. Ed Sikes of Stanley, H.L. Weagent of Bellingham, Washington and William of Spokane.

    Mr. Weagent nearly al of his life was a farmer, tho he had learned the blacksmith's trade and worked at it for several years.

    Roderick married Mary Miller about 1856.
