    Notes:

(Research):Helen Gourley Miller may have been a twin but no batismal record could be found to verify this. She was baptised in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lanark Ontario and this the source indicated for the following information.

Notes were found to link Blair Gourlay Miller #4081 in my Legacy database indicating his name was found in a microfilm circa 1970s, listing him as a child present at the time of Helen's death in 1950. He does not appear in the 1852 census so if he was not a stillborn or childhood death, he may have been adopted by another family member as were other children in the family e.g. John Mason Miller #335 by Janet Miller #20 and Robert Hendry Boyle and Jane Eliza Miller and Andrew Burns Miller #825 by George Miller #27 and Helen Mason. For the moment I have unlinked him from the family of Thomas Miller #22 until further proof can be found.

    Notes:

Elizabeth Mason Miller died on 27 January 1850 after giving birth to twin sons who were born and baptised on 9 January 1950. She ws the daughter of Robert Mason and Helen Gourlay who had immigrated to Canda at the same time as the Miller family.

Andrew Burns Miller was raised by his uncle George Miller in Bathurst Township, Canada West (Lanark County, Ontario, Canada). John Mason Miller was raised by his aunt Janet (Mrs. Robert Boyle) and went to Australia with them in the 1860's. John Mason Miller travelled to Ipswich Reserve, Australia with the Boyle family on the Golden City, arriving on 5 February 1866. The Boyle family settled on the Ipswich Agricultural Reserve in the Fassifern Valley near Brisbane Queensland. John Mason Miller was 16 years of age when he arrived in Queensland.

In the 1851 Canada West census ?b?John Mason Miller?/b? is listed twice, once in the household of his father Thomas Miller and secondly in the household of Robert Hendry Boyle.

In 1851 his father, ?b?Thomas Miller?/b?, is 42, member of the Church of Scotland, who is a farmer and lives in a log house. John Mason's siblings are listed as William 18, Robert 16, George 15, Mary 11, Thomas 9, Helen 7, Robertson 6, David 4, and Andrew 2. Margaret Mason, a sister of his mother, age 23, is also listed and has probably assumed the 'mother' role in the household. It is unknown who cared for John Mason during his infancy. Janet, his aunt would have only been eight years older than his father, Thomas, and would have grown up in the same neighbourhood and probably forged a close relationship. Her youngest child Mungo, was six years old so it is not probable that she was able to nurse John Mason as an infant. If he joined her household shortly after birth as the census may indicate, a wet nurse may have been engaged or a sop* used.

Meanwhile (1851), in the Boyle household you have Robert Boyle, age 57, member of the Free Church, a farmer who also lives in a log house. His wife Jannet is a sister of William, father of Thomas, and aged 48. The family members are slightly older; Catherine 26, Mary 24, William 21, John 18, Robert 17, David 15, James 12 and Mungo 10. John Mason is listed as age 3, indicating that the census was taken later in the year.

In 1861, aged 12, John is again listed as a member of this household.

Meanwhile, Andrew Burns Miller is only listed with his father, Thomas Miller's household in 1851. In 1861 Andrew Burns Miller, age 11, is found in the household of George Miller. Other members of the household are George Miller 47, his wife (Helen) Ellen 45, Jane 18, Mary 16, Robert 14, Jennet 12, Margaret 10, William 7, Catherine 5, George 3. Again, it is not known who would have cared for him as an infant unless a wet nurse was engaged or Margaret Mason was able to successful feed him with a sop.

Thomas Miller remarried in 1852. He and his new wife Ann Wilson Donaldson, b circa 1812, had three children, James b. 1853, Jennett b. 1856, and Agnes b. 1860. They appear as part of Thomas Miller's household in 1861 along with children from his first marriage. It appears that the twins, have both been 'adopted' within the extended family shortly after birth or at least by the time that Thomas remarried.

(Research):Mary, Mungo and John Mason Miller are the only family members mentioned in John's letters in 1870 to his twin brother Andrew Burns Miller.

    Died:
    Miller -
There passed away at her home in Bathurst in the early morning of the 18th inst., Mrs Ellen Miller, after an illness of but a few days. Mrs. Miller had reached the remarkable age of 92 years and 4 months and up to the time of her illness had been in good health with intellect bright and with a capacity for sharing with others in the joys and sorrows.

Over half a century ago at the early age of 47 years her life partner Mr. Andrew Miller passed away and on the shoulders of Mrs Miller fell the task of caring for and directing the activities of a large family. Patience, fortitude and self-sacrifice were outstanding virtues in the life of the deceased and added to these was a brightness of life and a depth of sympathy that won for her friendship that lasted throughout her life and living memories that will long remain with those who knew her. In life she experienced the sustaining and upholding grace of God and in death she passed to be with her Saviour whom she loved and in whose service she found quiet joy.

Mrs. Miller leaves to mourn the loss of a devoted mother, two daughters, Adaline, whose life was so closely linked with that of the deceased, and Tena (Mrs. John Jordan of Christy's Lake); also five sons, Nelson of Crookston, Minn; Sydney, of Edmonton, Alta; Norman of town; and Edwin and Harvey of Bathurst. Three sons predeceased their mother, Lorenzo and Arthur of Crookston, and Albert who died in infancy.

The funeral was held on Friday afternoon when friends and neighbors in large numbers congregated at the home to pay a silent tribute to one who for such a lengthy span of years had lived and moved amongst them. The funeral services was in charge of Rev. Mr. Harrison, minister of Clavin Church, assisted by Rev. M.C. Mackinnon of St. Paul's Church, town. During the service a most appropriate duet was effectively rendered by Miss Marion Palmer and Mr. R. W. Palmer. The bearers were Messrs. W.J. Palmer, John Korry, Sterling Miller, Alex. Kirkham, Willie Stewart and Roy Miller. The body was placed in the vault in Elmwood Cemetery awaiting interment at a later date.

    Death of Mrs. W. Blair

Margaret Mason Miller, relict of the late William Blair, died at the family residence in the township of Bathurst, near Fallbrook, on Saturday, June 2nd. She had been ill eight months with cancer of the stomach.

The funeral took place on Tuesday, June 5th, from Fallbrook to Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, where remains were interred. Rev. J. G. Greig, Presbyterian minister of Balderson, conducted the religious services at the house. The pallbearers were John Korry, Fred Fisher, Norman Miller, George Miller, James Anderson, and Robert Innes. The funeral was largely attended and there were many floral offerings.

Margaret Mason Miller, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, was born 67 years ago on the 3rd line township of Bathurst on the homestead now occupied by Mr. George Miller. Her mother's maiden name was Helen Mason. Robert and Andrew, deceased, and George on the homestead were brothers; Mrs W. M. Gibson, Lecombe (Lacombe, AB); Mrs Ritchie and Miss Miller deceased, and Miss Catherine Miller, Perth, were sisters.

About forty-five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Blair were married and settled down on the 3rd line of Bathurst. 32 years ago they moved to the present family home on the banks of the Fall River, one mile from the village of Fallbrook.

There were six sons and daughters - Mrs. D.A. Fisher, Harper; Mrs John Korry, 3rd line Bathurst; Gertrude and John at home; Arthur, Dominion Land Surveyor in the West, and William G., now a medical Captain with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in France.

Mrs. Blair was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Balderson in the pastorate of Rev. J.G. Greig, and followed consistently in her daily life the Christian principles whch she avowed. Her nature was of that gentle type that bends most easily to acts of kindness and love. Her supreme devotion was to her family, whose course in life she directed and prayed for that their individual lives might be brought in relationship with the highest and best. In this way she represented Canada's noblest womanhood - the womanhood that gives to the nation and to our social order the best elements of citizenship, She supported heartily all measures for good that came that came within her reach and this readiness to do good won her many lasting friends. In the passing of Mrs. Blair there are sons and daughters, friends and acquaintances, that mourn the loss of a true friend and a good woman.
