    Died:
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Malcolm Douglas Rowat at the age of 75, on March 10, 2021 in London, England after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer.
A career Canadian diplomat with the World Bank, Malcolm was born in Montreal, the youngest child of the Hon. John Pozer Rowat and Ruby Mary McCormack. He attended College Marie de France where he became proficient in French, then Bishop's College School. His university education started at McGill University where he earned a BA (Hons.), followed by three years at Columbia University where he earned two Masters degrees, an MBA and MIA (International Affairs). He then began a thirty-year career in international finance with the World Bank in Washington D.C., where he travelled the world. While a senior economist at the Bank he earned a JD (Law) and an LLM (International Law) at Georgetown University. He was also very proud of his certificate in advanced music CAMS from King's College in London, and diploma in wine from WSET.
In his retirement, Malcolm continued to travel, as his interests and consulting took him to many countries. He was a true bon vivant, with interests in the arts, food and wine. He sang bass with the Washington Men's Camerata while working at the Bank, and later sang with the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus in London and the Choeur de L'Orchestre de Paris. He made annual visits to the Salzburg Festival and served on the Board of American Friends of the Salzburg Festival.
During his Bank days in Washington, Malcolm was an active member of the Metropolitan Club. In London, he joined the Garrick Club, where he will be missed at the Centre Table. As a member of the Burgundian society the Chevaliers du Tastevin, his contributions to the Garrick Wine committee were appreciated.
Malcolm was the author of a number of books on various academic subjects including Latin American Insolvency and Competition Policy. He also published a book 'The Origins and Roles of Instrumental Music in the Operas of Richard Strauss'.
An avid sportsman, Malcolm loved running and tennis. He ran 4-6 km daily and played tennis regularly. He will be deeply missed by his fellow members of Queen's Club London and the Tennis Club de Paris. He was also a fervent supporter of the Montreal Canadiens and saw them win 19 Stanley Cups.
He is survived by his siblings, David Rowat (Margaret), Barbara Rowat Flam (David), and Beverly Rowat (Linda Snell), and their families, who will miss their favourite Uncle Malcolm who was invariably home for Christmas every year, where his contribution of wines to the family dinners were legendary.
