    Fraser?Died, on Friday, 22nd July Mrs. Francis Allan Fraser, relict of the late James Fraser, aged 94 years, 2(?)3(?) months.

    On Friday last there died at the residence of Mrs. M. R. Dodds at the great age of 94 years Mrs. James Fraser, for some years before her death the only survivor among the pioneer band who settled in the Perth section of Lanark County. The deceased, whose maiden name was Jane Cowie, was born in the village of Corstorphine near Edinburgh, Scotland in the year 1798 and when 17 years old came with her parents (actually her husband, infant son and her brother) across the Atlantic arriving at Brockville in 1815. Next year the family made their way to Perth coming by the ferry and it was worthy of note that she and a companion were the first white women who ever crossed the Rideau River. The bridge was simply two logs lashed together with basswood bark side by side. With most of the other settlers who arrived then, the family settled on a farm on the Scotch Line then simply areas of unbroken forest. The trials and hardships of these early settlers were very great and many succumbed to the privations they could not endure but the deceased had a strong constitution that carried her through them all and after a time comfort and comparative affluence succeeded the hardships of her family life and made the burdens less severe.

    Mrs. Fraser married two times. Her first husband was the late Francis Allan, also a native of Scotland and to them were born several children, some of whom are or were among the best known residents of this locality. They were John Allan of Snow Road and Francis Allen and James Allan, merchant, Perth. Robert Allan, Bathurst, William Allan, mill owner, North Burgess, Alexander Allan, hardware merchant, Smith's Falls, and the late Isaac Allan, hardware merchant Perth and the late Mrs. James (Rev.) Gray, wife of the Presbyterian minister of Kingston and Mrs. Calvin Holliday, County Perth and the late Mrs. James Holliday of Perth and Mrs. M. R. Dobbie of Perth are also children.

    By her second marriage she had no children. Mrs. Fraser was a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 70 years and took the communion up to a few years ago when her system both bodily and mentally began to break up and to make ready for the great change.

    The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon Rev. James Ross conducting the services and her remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. The deceased saw many generations of young and old laid in the graveyards and cemeteries here and finally when her own time came she had made herself ready for the closing sleep and the awakening hereafter.

    John Allan, son of Francis Allan, writer to the Signet, came with pioneer settlers in 1816. Son John born Perth in 1816, was first male child born in new settlement. Mother was Janet Cowie, who was the first woman to cross the Rideau.

    Obituary
    The late John Allan - As the Late John Allan, who died on may 5th, 1900, at the home of his son Isaac, at Mississippi Station, was well known in Perth and its vicinity, a more extended sketch of his life may not be uninteresting to our readers, and especially so, as his birth is synchronous with the first settlement on the Scotch Line. He was born on August 24th, 1816, and was the first male child born in the new settlement. His parents were born in Corstorphinie, three miles from Edinburgh, and lived in Edinburgh after their marriage. Coming to Canada in 1815, they remained in Brockville the first winter, and settled on the Scotch Line in the spring of 1816. His father, Mr. Francis Allan, was a Writer to the Signet in Scotland. His mother, whose maiden name was Janet Cowie, was born in Scotland in 1798, and lived to an extreme old age. She was the first white woman to cross the Rideau River, near Perth.

    John Allan was nearly all his life engaged in the milling business. He first had a saw-mill and a carding mill on the Scotch Line. Later, he ran a sawmill and a grist mill on the Tay river, and was also engaged in the milling business in Perth. In 1877 he removed from Perth to Palmerston, at Snow Road station, wher he owned a sawmill for several years.

    In August 1841, he married to Ann McLean, whom he survived ten years. There were eleven children, seven of whom are still living: Francis, in Perth, Thomas in Vancouver, William John in the Lake Superior District, James, Robert and Isaac at Mississippi, and Mrs. S. Donaldson, at Donaldson 's Mills.

    Mr. Allan always took an active part in Christian work, and was an enthusiastic and faithful Sabbath School worker. Hesuperintended the Sabbath School on the Scotch Line, and held that position also in Perth. At Snow Road he organized the first Sunday School, and faithfully performed the duties of Superintendant for many years until laid aside by illness from active work. It was largely through his efforts that the Snow Road congregation was established. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for 47 years, having been ordained in Knox Church, Perth on May 28th, 1853. He also took a warm interest in all affairs of a public nature, and for some years rendered good service as a member of the Palmerston council. In politics he was a staunch Reformer. The funeral services wer held in Snow Road church on May 7th, and was largely attended. The Rev. Jas. Binnie, the pastor, conducted the service and spoke from the text: "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life" (Rev. 2, 10), and referred to Mr. Allan's faithfulness in the community, as a citizen, friend, and neighbor, his faithfulness in the home, in the S. School and in the church. Six of his fellow elders from the McDonald's Corners, Elphin and Snow Road congregations acted as pall-bearers, and his remains were lovingly followed by his children, friends and neighbours, and were interred in the Crawford Cemetery.

    "Cowie. The death occurred at his home on the Scotch Line Sunday morning at ten o'clock of Mr. Wm. Cowie in his 79th year. Deceased had been troubled with his heart for some time, the ultimate cause of his demise. He was a son of the late Robert Cowie of Christorphon, Scotland and Jane Adams of Utica, N. Y. He was born at Utica, N. Y., on the 25th of December, 1840, and came to this country with his parents when a boy. Settling on the Scotch Line at the age of 22 years on the farm where he died, he married Margaret Kemp of Ramsay, who predeceased him 32 years, leaving a family of five sons and two daughters, Jessie died two years later. They are: Robert of Winnipeg; James of Balderson; William of Juanita, Sask.; Frank of Morden, Sask.; Isaac of Ottawa, and Mrs. Wm. Rea of Lethbridge, Alta. Deceased later married Catharine MacKenzie of Halifax, N. S., who survives with two sons and one daughter: Garvilla at home, Nelson of Alberta, and Walter who was lost on the Llandovery Castle hospital ship. Deceased had farmed on the Scotch Line for over 50 years. The funeral took place on Tuesday at 2:30 o'clock to the old Presbyterian cemetery."

    Francis Cowie
    Mr Francis William Cowie, a former ex-deputy reeve of Almonte, died at an Ottawa hospital on Thursday. Born in Almonte 78 years ago. Mr Cowie spent most of his life here, but he had been in the west for nearly 15 years lately. During his life he filled many important positions in Almonte, including being a member of the Almonte town council, and deputy reeve, In politics he was a Conservative, and also took a keen interest in municipal matters. He owned a large pump factory in Almonte, and latterly spent a great part of his time travelling in the west, attending to his numerous interests. During the winters, he lived with his daughter, Mrs George Bennett. In addition to his daughter, Mrs Bennett, Ottawa, and two little grandchildren. Francis and Monie, he is survived by a sister, Mrs Porteous, Seattle, Wash. The funeral took place from the residence of Mrs Bennett, 196 Lyon street, to the Central Depot, enroute to Almonte, where interment took place on Saturday morning. There were many old friends at the funeral.

    The late Mr. James Cowie.
    The festivities of New Year's Day were at their height in town when the death was announced of Mr. Jas. Cowie, after less, than a week's illness from inflammation of the lungs. Many of our towns men had scarcely heard of his illness, and the sad news came as a shock to them, and cast a gloom over the town. Mr. Cowie took cold while driving to Carleton Place, on Christmas, and it developed rapidly, ending in what is known as broncho-pneumonia. Everything possible was done to avert a fatal termination - Dr. Wright, of Ottawa, being called in, in addition to the local physicians?but medical skill and the most assiduous care proved of no avail, and on Wednesday forenoon the spirit went out to its Maker.

    The late Mr Cowie was in his 41st year. Few men in the district were better known, his business taking him all over Eastern Ontario. He was proprietor of the Al-monte pump factory and agent for Patterson and Bros., agricultural implement manufacturers. He was a pushing business man, and took a warm interest in the affairs of the town, occupying the position of councillor for a time.

    Five young boys and one girl, with the mother, survive to mourn the loss of a kind hearted and devoted parent and husband, and they have the earnest sympathy of our townspeople generally in their irreparable loss.

    James Halliday Passes Away After Attack of Only Few Minutes
    The death of James Halliday, of Argyle Court, occurred suddenly Monday afternoon. He went for a walk following lunch, and on returning, became ill and died in a few minutes.

    The late Mr. Halliday was born in Perth, Ont., 76 years ago, and for 40 years was a resident of Bruce County. He was conservative member of the Dominion house, representing North Bruce about 18 years ago. He came to Calgary in 1915 to be near the remainder of his family, as he has two sons and one daughter residing in Alberta. He is survived, besides his widow, by three sons, A. A., of Crossfield; W. A., of Edmonton; Dr. J. Halliday, of North Dakota; and one daughter, Mrs. R. E. Brown, of Edmonton.

    The funeral will be held ? afternoon at Graham, McCall and Brennan's undertaking parlors, at 2:30 o'clock, after which interment will be made in the Union cemetery. Rev. J. Macartney Wilson, D.D., will officiate.

    Mrs John Moore
    The death occurred in Newark, N.J. at the home of her daughter, Mrs A. Burroughs, of Mrs John Moore, a native of Glen Tay, Ont., at the age of 57 years. The late Mrs Moore was educated in the Almonte Public and High School, and following her marriage to Mr Moore in 1878, lived for twelve years on the seventh line of Ramsay. In 1890, Mr and Mrs Moore moved to Russell where they resided for twelve years, later going to Carleton Place. Following the death of Mr Moore in 1907. Mrs Moore went to live with her daughter in Newark. Of eight children, five survive, Mrs A Burroughs, Mrs D. Harrison, Mrs G.N. McEwen and William and John Moore. The body of the late Mrs Moore was cremated at Newark and the urn will be deposited in the eighth line cemetery, Ramsay
