    Land & Property:
To the Editor of the "Perth Courier"
    Sir,
Can you inform me if a British subject can be deprived of the Queen's highway by the Municipality of the Township in which he lives, according to law, if not, I have been most shamefully treated by the municipal council of North Burgess for years past. Better than four years ago they passed a By-law, and sold part of the sixth concession line, being from Adams' Lake to a certain Bridge, being about 1 1/2 acres long, it being sanctioned by the County Council; but when giving the deed, granted it for five times the length, depriving me of the Concession line altogether. But, sir, there is a Queen's side road between my neighbour and me, and for which the owner of the Concession line petitioned the Council, to buy it also; and I believe would have succeeded, only I happened to be there on other business and protested against such proceedings. For years I have been applying by petition, all duly signed by one or other of the council, still they lie in their office without one action being taken on them. I have been appointed Pathmaster for this year, and as England expects every man to do his duty, I called on the reeve, who is also a magistrate, (within the last 12 days), I wished him to send a summons to a person who has overflowed the Queen's sideroad with water, the only road left me, but his honour declined doing anything in the case, although I told him I would make the road at my own expense, which is nearly three acres of cross-laying. They, the Council, have been repeatedly told that I am under a compliment for a pathway to the travelled road, and I have every reason to believe that some of the Council, (not all, I am happy to say), glory in this idea. Mr. Editor, by giving the above an insertion you will much oblige.
    Your obedient,
    Wm. G. Tully

    Died:
    ?i?Hannah R. Ketcheson?/i?

Died, as the righteous die, in the township of Madoc, April 22nd (1887). Hannah Rebecca, beloved wife of John R. Ketcheson Esq. Sister Ketcheson was born in the town of Perth, Ont., March 1st, 1837, and spent her early years with her parents at Napanee, Belleville, Randon and Stirling. At the latter place she received a liberal education, and entered upon the profession of school teacher. In this she was eminently successful, and won many friends among old and young.

She was united in marriage with her now bereaved companion in September, 1857, and with him shared, in sunshine and shade, the toils and afflictions of life, mingled as they were with the enjoyments of a pleasant home, until called to her reward. She was trained by Christian parents, and at an early age became anxious to receive and do good. Being of a kind disposition, she ever evinced a deep sympathy for those in trouble.

Her light was to mingle with the young, especially in the Sunday school, where she was ever anxious, whenever she could, to be found laboring for their welfare. Her amiability at home and elsewhere won her respect in life which manifested itself in death by the deep regret expressed by all who knew her. Her death was very sudden and unexpected, so much so that her friends were in doubt for three days whether she tarried in the clay or had entered her rest. The funeral obsequies were attended by the writer, and her remains interred in the Madoc Cemetery to await the resurrection of the Just. Many an Itinerant will remember the kindness received in sharing the hospitalities always so cheerfullly bestowed in this home. She leaves a husband, two sons, and a daughter, with numerous relatives and friends, to mourn her demise. May they all meet her in glory.

    Died:
1890 Portrait and Biographical Album of Jeferson and Van Buren Counties

THOMAS TULLEY, proprietor of a meat-market of Cantril, Van Buren County, is a native of Pennsylvania. He was born in Schuylkill, August 15, 1847, and is a son of Thomas and Margaret (Canfil) Tulley. His parents were both natives of Ireland, where they grew to maturity and were married, after which they left the Emerald Isle and came to America, locating in the Keystone State, where our subject was born. The father engaged in coal mining for some time and then started westward with the hope of bettering his financial condition. He took up his residence in St. Louis, Mo., where he opened a grocery store, carrying on business in that line until, attracted by the discovery of gold at Pike's Peak, he started for the scene of supposed wealth. He was last heard of at Salt Lake City and a report came that he was there taken sick and died, but it was supposed that he was killed for his team and the money which he carried with him. His widow ever remained true to his memory and devoted herself to her six children thus left dependent upon her for support. Catherine, the eldest daughter, is now the wife of John Smith; Lydia wedded John A. Leas and is living in Keokuk; Lizzie is the deceased wife of Noah Pritchett, of Cantril; John, William and Thomas complete the family. Mrs. Tulley came with her children to Iowa in 1850, where she remained until her death which occurred some twenty-four years later. Her remains were buried in Hoskins Cemetery, and a beautiful monument marks her last resting place, erected as a token of the love which her children bore her.

We now take up the personal history of Thomas Tulley, who at the early age of thirteen years began life for himself and has since made his own way in the world. It was his desire to follow railroading and to that end he became an engine wiper on the Wabash Road. On the expiration of a term of apprenticeship he was made fireman, and after three years, in recognition of his efficiency and faithfulness, he was placed in charge of an engine. He continued railroading then for a period of thirteen years, but at length desisted from it at the request of his aged mother, who feared that her boy might in that manner meet his death. In several instances he did narrowly escape death, having been in several wrecks, in one of which his left wrist was crushed. During his thirteen years' service as an engineer he was employed upon the Wabash and the Union Pacific Railroads, and after his return to the road, following the death of his mother, he entered the employ of the Keokuk, St. Louis & Western, a branch of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy system.

At length Mr. Tulley permanently abandoned engineering and turned his attention to the breeding of horses and jacks, purchasing a thoroughbred Clyde and Norman stallion and a Kentucky jack. This business he sold out and then embarked in the butchering business, which he followed in Illinois until the autumn of 1881, when he came to Cantril, Iowa. On the 22d of October, he opened a meat-market in Cantril and to that vocation he has since devoted his energies. He slaughters on an average of three cattle per week, does all his own killing, preserves his own meats and has a good trade. Considering the disadvantages under which he labored in early years, he has met with excellent success in his business career which is due to his thrift and industry.

In 1874, Mr. Tulley wedded Louisa J. Struble, who was born in Van Buren County in 1863, and is a daughter of Jacob and Louisa Struble, natives of Germany. Five children grace their union and the family circle yet remains unbroken. In order of birth they are as follows: John, F. Clare, Speed, Bessie and Rutledge L. Mr. Tulley is one of the active members of the Methodist Church, is one of the Board of Directors under whose management the house of worship was erected, and to the support of the Gospel he gives liberally. As every true citizen should do, he feels an interest in political affairs, his views being in harmony with the principles of Democracy. He is a member of the City Council, which position he has filled five years to the satisfaction of all concerned. In civic societies, Mr. Tulley takes considerable interest and is an honored member of several organizations. He belongs to Apollo Lodge No. 461, A. F. & A. M., Moore Chapter, and Commandery of Keosauqua; also holds membership in Prairie Gem Lodge, No. 50, I. O. 0. F., which he has three times represented in the State Lodge, and also in Cantril Lodge, No. 235, K. P. He is a retired member of the Brother-hood of Locomotive Engineers.

Thomas married Louis Jane Struble in 1874. Louis was born on 14 Sep 1852 in Van Buren County, Iowa, United States; died on 10 Feb 1934 in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri, United States; was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril, Van Buren County, Iowa, United States.
