    (Research):1820 Emigration from Armagh

    I am indebted to the many researchers who have contacted me in the process of searching for their Irish roots, who have contributed pieces of the puzzle which unfolds below. After several years it remains a partially solved puzzle, and I welcome future contributions to this page from the folks whose ancestors lived at one time in Armagh, Ireland.

    Before I begin, let me lay out what this story is about, and how it impacted the people who participated in it. British North America was sparsely populated at the time of the War of 1812, when the expansionist attempted and failed to annex its northern neighbor - which was still some 50 years away from being a country in its own right. The border with the United States the St. Lawrence River, as seen in the map below, had its settlements at Prescott, Elizabethtown (Brockville), Gananoque and Kingston and a farming population which was pushing slowly northward. Roads were little more than forest trails, and transport was largely by foot. Could this rural backwash sustain another American attack? It seemed unlikely, when the idea emerged that the area not right on the border could be opened up to farming settlement, and that it could be populated by settlers experienced in defending themselves - who would form militias to do so when required. What better place to find such settlers than in the aftermath of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Government official, Peter Robinson (Peterborough was named after him) got the job done - transporting settlers in 1823 and 1825 - which initiated a steady stream of emigration.

    While the largely Protestant loyalists had emerged victorious, the aftereffects of a viciously fought war had rendered their previous hegemony precarious at best and about to crumble at worst. Here were a rag tag people, loyal to their Crown and fervent about their religion - who were unwelcome where they lived. It was time for them to move, and the attraction of support by the Crown, the hope of a promised land, pushed them to step forward. Few were prepared for what they would find - eight miserable weeks at sea - rampant infection aboard ship - and then a trek through heavily forested no man's land to more heavily forested 100 acre bush lots - which would, for the most part, have to be cleared before they could grow anything - or own the land. Two stirring accounts of their experience have survived. The first account involved my CODD relatives from Aghold Wicklow who travelled on the Mary & Bell in 1817. They would venture as far as Kitley Township, and would establish an inn where the road forked - one trail going north to Perth and the other northeast to what would eventually become Smiths Falls. Many settlers would sojourn at Kitley before moving northward, and some would return here to settle. The second account of a traveller on the 1821 voyage of the David of London details the travails of Scottish settlers, escaping overpopulation, who would find different difficulties here - but never overpopulation.

    We regret to record the death of an old and respected resident Mr. James Code of Drummond who passed away on Monday morning May 19th, at an advanced age of 73. He was born in the County of Wexford Ireland in the year 1817 and emigrated to this country with his parents when but eight months old. His parents were about some of the first settlers of Drummond. They then took up land on what is now called fourth Con. Drummond but was then an entire wood, through many hardships as was known in them early days. He worked along with his parents while helping to clear and till the land until the year 1842 he married one of Irelands fair daughters Miss Eliza Bailey and settled down for himself on a farm on the third line which he remained up to the time of his death.

    He had a family of 12 children five of whom dies in early childhood and seven of whom still remain to mourn his loss toghether with his sorrowing widow.

    In religion he was a methodist from his early childhood which he always upheld and sustained. And in May 19th peacefully passed away after a lengthy illness of five months.

    The Methodist Minister Mr. Henderson preached his funeral sermon taking as his text part of the XC Psalm.

    Established Homestead in West End in 1882; Was Past President of Old Timers' Association
    Charles Jackson, 86, well-known Calgary pioneer and past president of the Southern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Eva Lapp, 1711 29th St. S.W.
    Mr. Jackson, who had been ill since the spring, died on a corner of the homestead he established in 1882. His daughter's house was built on a corner of his original property which originally occupied "Shaganappi Point" now part of the Municipal golf course and the Killarney municipal subdivision.
    Born in Wingham, Ontario, Mr. Jackson came directly to Calgary on coming west in '82. In 1884 he started the city's first milk delivery, and was one of the early supporters of the Salvation Army when it first came to Calgary in 1887.
    Mr. Jackson was the only original member of the Army's citadel corps to celebrate the 60th anniversary in Calgary, celebrated in October, 1947. He was a member of the Army bank for many years and donated the site now occupied by the Booth Memorial Home.
    A familiar figure in Stampede parades, Mr. Jackson continued to drive the old steamer automobile which had once made him famous as "the first man in Calgary to own a car."
    During his many years in Calgary, he farmed for several years and later was engaged in real estate business. During the past few years he had continued to make his home here, although he had spent much time traveling through the United States and Eastern Canada.
    His wife, Mary Jane, died in Calgary in April, 1933. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eva Lapp, Calgary, and Mrs. William Meaker, Lethbridge; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    Abram Kersey Jackson, 73, died Saturday at his home, 2410 27th St. W., following a lengthy illness. Mr. Jackson had lived in Calgary district for 43 years.

    Born in Wingham, County Heron, Ont., Mr. Jackson came to Calgary and began farming in the west Calgary district. He erected the first three stores on 17th Ave. W. directly across from Western Canada high school. Mr. Jackson retired in 1932.

    Re date of birth: Both the 1901 census and her Ontario death registration (on which her husband was the informant) indicate Eliza was born 24 JULY 1878. The 1911 census also shows she was born July 1878 [not 1879 as transcribed on Ancestry.com]
    Her Ontario birth registration shows she was born 24 September 1879, but also shows her birth was registered prior to the date of birth entered , on 12 September 1879. The birth registrations covered on the pages where Eliza's is found go over several different years.
    It appears the correct date of birth is 24 JULY 1878.
