    James Ferrier Obituary
Ea-------------d of the death of Mr James Ferrier, one of the pioneer residents of Dummer. Mr. Ferrier's father was a native of Scotland, coming to this country in 1815, landing at Brockville and settling at Perth where the subject of this sketch was born in 1818. The family removed to Dummer in 1831, when the setters had to dispute possession with bears and wolves; so that James Ferrier was not only one of the earliest, but one of the longest residents of this county having been in it half a century. Mr Ferrier was one of the volunteers from this vicinity who made the memorable march to Toronto in the troublous times of 1837. During the latter part of his life, Mr. Ferrier, who was unmattied, lived with his sister, Mrs. John Blamer, a short distance from town. Mr Ferrier was a good citizen and lived a life that won for him the general respet of the community. The funeral takes place on Thursday, the remains being buried at South Dummer.

    Accident by Drowning
It is our painful duty to record the death of Mr. Alexander Gow, by drowning in the Little Lake, on Tuesday evening last. It seems that Mr. Gow was on the Lake skating with a number of companions. About 10 o'clock pm, he left for home, intending to cross the Lake, and thus reach his residence in Ashburnham by a much shorter route than by going round. In a very few minutes the treacherous ice was heard to crack, and shouts for help immediately followed; but the night was so intensely dark that those on the ice could give no assistance the unfortunate young man, who, after a short and desperate last fruitless struggle to rescue himself from a watery grave, sank to rise no more. Thus passed away from our midst, in the spring of manhood, one who had endeared himself to all his friends by his high moral qualities and general amibility of character. What a solemn lesson is then taught to all; truly in our brightest moments, are we in the midst of death. Mr. Gow was about 25 years of age, and unmarried. We sincerely sympathize with the relatives in the deep affliction that has befallen them. The body, up to our going to press, had not been recovered. People cannot be too careful in resisting open newly formed ice. Several other parties have, we believe, within the last few days, fallen through, but luckily rescued.
    ?i?Peterborough Examiner, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, 10 December1863

    ?/i?Melancholy Accident
We deeply regret to learn that on Tuesday evening last Mr. Alexander Gow, while skating on Little Lake, broke through the ice and drowned. It appears that Mr. Gow, who resides in Ashburnham, had early in the evening crossed over from Ludgate's Mill to the Monaghan shore, near the residence of Mrs. Ware. After skating for some time, he started to return, some other persons accompanying him part of the way. After they had left him but a few moments, they heard his cries, and were near enough to hear him say that he had broken through; but, deterred by the darkness of the night and the frail nature of the ice, they made for the shore. Poor Gow soon went under, and his body has not since been discovered. We fear the gentlemen who, hearing his cries, made not even an attempt to rescue him, stand but a poor chance of ever wearing the medal of the humane society. The unfortunate man has left a widowed mother to mourn his untimely death.

He was usually called Bruce. He had no known marriage and no known children.

    Death Notes:
Well known Figure in City Business Life Passes Away
G.B. Brown Succumbs to Attack of Pleurisy. Interment at Vancouver
On New Year's Eve there passed away at the St. Eugene hospital one of Cranbrook's old-timers in the person of Mr. George Bruce Brown. He had been identified with the business interests of Cranbrook for approximately twenty years and was well and favorably known among a large circle of friends in Cranbrook and the Crows Nest Pass. "Bruce" as he was familiarly known, was really a western pioneer. A native of Peterboro, Ontario, he was one among the many easterners making the rush to the Klondyke in the early days. Following his return to Winnipeg, where he worked as a traveller for the G.B.Wood Co.,for a time , going thence to Rossland, where he was employed. About eighteen years ago he came to Cranbrook and entered the employ of the J.D. McBride Hardware Co. About 1910 he spent a short time in Fernie as bookkeeper for the J.D. Quail Hardware Co., also with shepherd & Elliot of the same city. He returned to Cranbrook to work with the new firm of Wasson & Parks in 1911 and was engaged with that firm and its successor, F. Parks & Co., ever since. For the last fourteen years Mr. Brown had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. F. Wasson.
He was of a quiet, retiring disposition, and did not take any active part in lodge or club affairs, but was a valuable member of the Cranbrook Retail Merchants Association, representing his firm, and acting for a time as secretary. He was taken ill on Christmas Eve, but it was Christmas Day before it was realized his trouble was serious. On the 26?sup?th?/sup? he was removed to the hospital, and though it was thought his chances of recovery were good, he passed peacefully away on New Year's Eve at about 8 p.m., a victim of pleural pneumonia, which his system was too weak to throw off.
The late Mr. Brown is survived by his father, who resides with a sister, Mrs Whitney, at Collingwood St., Vancouver. Colin C. Brown is one of two brothers also residing in Vancouver, and another brother, Jack, resides in Seattle.
The funeral took place from the undertaking parlours on Wednesday, previous to the departure of the train for Vancouver, where the body was shipped for interment. Rev. E.W. MacKay officiated at the brief service held here.
Deceased was a familiar figure in the business life of the city, and will be much missed in the counsels of the merchants when matters relating to their interests are brought up. He was in his sixtieth year and unmarried.
