Obituary - The Perth Courier Newspaper - issue of March 4, 1932, page 7.

Campbell - In ill health since last December, the death occurred in Rochester, N. Y., on Wednesday, February 24th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thos. Devereaux, of Mr. David Campbell, of Rideau Ferry, North Elmsley, retired Government bridge tender at the Ferry and widely known in this district. The late Mr. Campbell was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Campbell, of North Elmsley, where he was born. He was 84years and 10 months in age. Early in life he became apprenticed to the blacksmithing trade in Perth with the late Mr. Richard Shaw, who conducted a foundry. For some years after finishing his apprenticeship, he conducted a blacksmith business on the Perth-Ferry road, his father then being the Government bridge tender at the Ferry. Some 32 years ago he succeeded his late father in the position of bridge tender which he held up until nine years ago when he was retired on pension. For a long period he resided, with his family, in the residence near the Ferry bridge, and conducted a store close by. In his position at the Ferry he became familiarly known to the many boat owners and crews along the Rideau route, by whom, as well as by his neighbors, and summer visitors from time to time at the Ferry he was held in high regard and esteem. He was always punctual and obliging in his duties, of a kindly and jovial nature, and was looked upon as a substantial citizen of the community. For the past 20 years or so Mr. and Mrs. Campbell had been accustomed to spending the winter months either in Perth or Rochester. Mr. Campbell was a staunch Orangeman for a long period, and a member of Lombardy L.O.L., and it was always his great delight to participate in the annual Orange walks on July 12th. Deceased was one of the few remaining veterans of '66 in this district. In 1867, Mr. Campbell was married to Miss Sarah Emerson, and to the union were born eight children, and they watched them grow to sturdy maturity and leave their homes, with the exception of one son, Mr. W. D., who remained at home and succeeded in his father's blacksmith business at Rideau Ferry, for other sections of Canada and United States. In March 1929, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell celebrated the 62nd anniversary of their wedding, and it was the first time in 30 years that all the family had been gathered together. Deceased is survived by his widow, four daughters, Mrs. Thomas Devereaux, Rochester, N.Y.; Mrs. S. Martin, Mrs. (Dr.) Orton and Mrs. H. Peterson, all of Syracuse, N.Y.; and four sons, Mr. W. D. Campbell, of Rideau Ferry; Mr. Fred G. Campbell, of Montreal; Messrs. Archie Campbell and Leslie Campbell, of Rochester. The remains were brought to Perth by C.P.R. on Thursday evening and taken to the residence of his son, Rideau Ferry, and from there the funeral was held on Friday afternoon to the vault in Rideau Ferry Cemetery. Rev. R. H. Wylie, minister of the Rideau Ferry United Church, conducting the services. The pallbearers were Messrs. Ed. McCue, Howden Beveridge, Thos. N. McLean, Ed Joynt, John Covell and Ed. Cain, of Perth. Those from a distance attending the funeral were his widow, all his sons and daughters, Mrs. Ernest Todd of Brockville, Mrs. E. Clark and Mr. & Mrs. D. J. McCann of Smiths Falls, Mrs. Darroch Whiticar, of Cobourg, Dr. Lorne Gilday and Mrs. Hobbs of Montreal. Beautiful wreaths of flowers were received from Mr. F. G. Campbell and family, Mrs. Thos. Gilday, Mrs. Richard Gilday and Semi-Ready Tailoring Co., Montreal, Miss Dorcas Marjoury, Rochester, and Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Campbell, Rideau Ferry.
