    Immigration:
"They left Liverpool on a sailing vessel that took six weeks to make the crossing to Montreal. They had got within a few days of Montreal when a storm from the west blew them back out into the Atlantic. During the voyage the two older girls , Mary and Sarah, prepared the meals. From Montreal they made their way to Brockville, Ontario where they spent the winter and then went up to Perth area where they rented farms for a number of years, including Bromley, a hamlet about 5 miles NW of Perth(sic, actually in Renfrew county) (where their youngest son James was born). The Bromley place may have been rented from the McNabs and if so, it would mark the beginning of a long-standing inter-family association.

On the 13th of May 1867 John purchased, for 800 pounds, the SW 1/2 and NE 1/2 of Lot 16, Bathurst Twp. Lanark Co. from Thomas Wilson, son of John's uncle George Wilson. George had settled there in 1816 and had encouraged John to emmigrate to the Perth area. George Wilson* built the wood frame portion of what we call the "Gibson family home" in the 1830's on the SW 1/2 of lot 16. John later acquired the adjoining southern portion of lot 17 (see photo of 1850's map), giving him a total of about 300 acres. In the 1880's John's son William built a larger brick house, attaching the old wood frame building to the rear of it.

    Occupation:
Historic Sites of Manitoba: Pilot Mound School No. 105 (Pilot Mound, Municipality of Louise)

The Pilot Mound School District was established formally in November 1880, in the Village of Pilot Mound. A two-storey wood frame structure, known as the "Old Red School," continued to be used after a two-storey brick school building was erected nearby in 1905, using locally-manufactured bricks, on a design by Winnipeg architect J. H. G. Russell. The brick school was demolished in 1959. It was replaced by a building that, in the 1960s, became Pilot Mound Consolidated School when it was consolidated with rural schools from the surrounding vicinity: Goudney School No. 87, Gowancroft School No. 204, Marringhurst School No. 231, Pembina School No. 270, Wood Bay School No. 307, Floral School No. 397, Copperfield School No. 480, and Stuartville School No. 795.
The "Old Mound", situated on the southeast quarter of 20-3-11 west of the Principal Meridian, about two miles northwest of the present site of Pilot Mound, in the Rural Municipality of Louise, first became settled in 1878. For a brief time, the village was known as Balmoral but it was renamed because that name was in use elsewhere.

Pilot Mound takes its name from the fact that the mound of shale that rises prominently above the surrounding landscape served as a "pilot" or landmark for the early fur traders, settlers, and explorers. While on the treeless prairie of the early days, the mound could be seen from a great distance. Aboriginal people called it "Mepawaquomoshin" or Little Dance Hill, a place used for ceremonial dances.

The town, built on the southeast side of the mound, was incorporated in 1883. When the Canadian Pacific Railway, which had made it to Manitou by 1883, continued westward in 1885, it bypassed the town by two miles. In 1885 and 1886, Pilot Mound relocated to its present site.

A stone vault used to store Land Titles documents stands on the southeast corner of the old mound. It was originally housed in a brick house built by James M. Fraser, who also operated the private banking firm of "Fraser and Company." He kept bank records in the vault until purchasing a large safe which later ended up in his home in Pilot Mound. (His home later became the Manse of Pilot Mound United Church.)

    Obituary
    Mrs (Dr.) Gibson
The residents of the Scotch Line and Perth can not but remember with esteem and affection one of the brightest and most worthy of their younger acquaintances, Miss Helen G. Gibson, who after a residence in Manitoba for a few years, was married at her parents' residence, (Mr. and Mrs W.M. Gibson), Scotch Line, to Dr. S.G. Gibson, of Langdon N. Dak. They will be stricken with sorrow upon learning of her early death, at her home in that town, on the 19th ofApril, the particulars of which we take from the Langdon Republican, of April 24:

Like a thuderbolt from a clear sky, came the news of the death of Mrs. (Dr.) Gibson on Saturday at 5:30 o'clock. Just 8 days previous the announcement of the birth of a son was received as glad tidings by her many friends in Langdon. The news of her death the week following was a shock to all. The deceased lady died from peritonitis, unlooked for at the beginning of her illness, but in spite of medical skill the disease culminated in death at the time above stated.

Mrs. Gibson was comparatively a stranger in our city, only having taken up her residence here about a year ago, but during that time she has endeared herself to all who were fortunate enough to coe within her circle of acquaintance. Mrs. Helen Gourlay Gibson was born near Perth, Canada, May 24, 1871. she came to Manitoba a few years ago and was principal of the Pilot Mound school, where she met and became engaged to her bereaved husband. They were married Dec. 19, 1900. Since coming to Langdon she has made many friends by her acts of Christian sympathy and charitable deeds, and the highest compliment we can pay to her memory is that all believe she was a Christian in thought, word and deed, and the sympathy of the whole community goes out to Dr. Gibson in his bereavement. She leaves an infant son as a remembrance - a pledge to her affection - and a comfort to her sorrowing husband.

The funeral took place today from the Presbyterian church of which sne was a member, Rev. Thomas Deugan officiating at the services. The floral tributes to her memory were beautiful, - a tribute to a beautiful life. The remains were followed to the Masonic cemetery by a large and sorrowing circle of friends. The funeral was delayed to allow her mother to arrive from Lacombe, N.W. Ter., but who unfortunately could not get there in time. Her brother, J.M. Gibson of Yorkton, Assa., was in attendance as was also Dr. Gibson's sister, Mrs. Little, of Pilot Mound, Man., and others whose names we did not learn. The Workmen and K.P.'s each forwarded resolutions of condolence.

    Occupation:
Max grew up on the Gibson farm located on the Scotch Line SW of Perth Ont. He probably learned the cheese making craft at the near-by Scotch Line Union cheese factory at the same time as his cousin Samuel Gibson and later Max's younger brother George. At about age 20 Max founded the Bathurst Mutual Cheese Company, named after the historic District (sic)(township) of Bathurst, of which Perth was the capital (sic) (county town). The Scotch Line was the southern boundary of both the District (sic) (township) and the Gibson farm.

From it's Tay Banks factory, Bathurst Mutual contributed, along with eleven other factories (including Scotch Line Union), to the famous "Mammoth Cheese" sent to the 1893 World's Exposition in Chicago. That cheese weighed 22,000 pounds and a replica stands in Perth, along with a plaque listing the principal contributors, including Max (see photos). Bathurst Mutual also had a second factory at Douglas, NE of Perth (see brother George's Story) and possibly a third somewhere else in the region (possibly at Balderson, SE of Perth where, like Bromley, there seems to have been some prior family connection).

At a later date (abt. 1910 ?) Max and family moved to Saltcoats Sask. where he operated a machinery business.

    Died:
Maggie never married and lived with her parents until their passing. She appears to have been the family touch-stone and custodian of Gibson memorabilia. She must have been designated "next of kin" by her brother Wm. Murray Gibson as his medals were sent to her (even though their parents were alive in 1917). Maggie would have had to relate the sad news.
It appears Maggie also received the phot album of Helen Courly Gibson, probably with some other personal effects, following Helens' untimely passing in childbirth.

Second Battle of Passchendaele - Part of the Third Battle of Ypres in the First World War
The Second Battle of Passchendaele was the culminating attack during the Third Battle of Ypres of the First World War. The battle took place in the Ypres Salient area of the Western Front, in and around the Belgian village of Passchendaele, between 26 October and 10 November 1917. The Canadian Corps relieved the exhausted II Anzac Corps, continuing the advance started with the First Battle of Passchendaele and ultimately capturing the village. Beyond gaining favourable observation positions, the battle was intended to gain drier winter positions on higher ground.

The assault position was directly south of the boundary between the British Fifth and Second Armies. The Canadian Corps was to attack with support of formations from the British Fifth Army to the north and the I Anzac Corps and X Corps to the south. The offensive was executed in a series of attacks with limited objectives, delivered at intervals of three or more days. The dates of the phases were tentatively given as 26 October, 30 October and 6 November with a final smaller action on 10 November. To permit time for divisional reliefs, there was a seven-day pause planned between the second and third stages, during which the Second Army took over the XVIII Corps area, north of the Canadian Corps, from the Fifth Army with the II Corps on 2 November, to assure unity of command over the central part of the attack front.

    ?u?Final attack?/u?
A final action to gain a nearby crossroad and the remaining high ground north of the village near Hill 52 was set for 10 November. The road junction was 1,000 yd (910 m) north of Passchendaele along the Westrozebeke road. Hill 52, the highest point on the northern end of the Passchendaele Ridge, was 500 yd (460 m) beyond the crossroads. Possession of the features would permit observation over German positions to the north-east. The 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade was to attack with support from one battalion of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade. The Germans had used the lull to move up regiments from the 4th Division and 44th Reserve Division to replace the 11th Division on 9 November. The assault was launched from the Green Line, north and north-east of Mosselmarkt, on the morning of 10 November and made good initial progress, capturing the crossroads, over-running Venture Farm and capturing four 77 mm field guns. North of the Canadian Corps boundary, the supporting advance by the British 1st Division ran into trouble, when a German counterattack got into a gap between the 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers and the 2nd Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers. The Germans engaged the British inner flanks with small-arms fire, causing many casualties and forcing back the survivors. Troops of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade filled the gap and threw back a defensive flank along the corps boundary, stopping the German advance. Though Haig had hoped to have the entire Passchendaele?Westrozebeke ridge as a winter position, the line was still short of the village; attempts to reach Westrozebeke in late November and early December also failed.

Andrew Harold Gibson was born on December 22, 1882, in Perth, Ontario. He was the seventh of nine children born to William and Jessie Gibson.

In 1901, he moved to Lacombe, Alberta, but in 1907 returned to the east to attend Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He graduated from the law school, and in 1912 was called to the bar in Edmonton. On July 13, 1913, he married Lena MacPherson Paton.

The photo to the right was shot by Edmonton photographer Gladys Reeves in about 1935.

He served as Northern Affairs Officer in Ottawa and the Northwest Territories before moving on Dawson City in 1950 and being appointed as Commissioner of the Yukon Territory on August 15th of that year.

The subject of moving the capital of the Yukon from Dawson City to Whitehorse had been a topic of discussion for many years. As one of his first duties, Commissioner Gibson had a report prepared on the matter.

In 1951 he was informed that the move of the capital to Whitehorse would take place, and he was given the job of informing staff and politicians. He resigned as Commissioner of the Yukon on October 15, 1951, shortly after announcing the move.

Andrew Harold Gibson died in Whitehorse on Monday, January 28, 1957, and is buried in the 6th Avenue Cemetery (now called the Pioneer Cemetery).

Magistrate Gibson's Death Brings End To Long And Distinguished Career -

A long and distinguished career that had touched many aspects of life ended here early Monday morning with the death of Magistrate Andrew Harold Gibson, QC. Active in the legal profession for more than 40 years, Magistrate Gibson had turned his hand to many pursuits, ranging from Commissioner of the Yukon Territory to prairie cowboy, before making his final move to Whitehorse.

Born 74 years ago in Perth, Ontario, Magistrate Gibson received his university training at Queen's. During his undergraduate years he was an all Canadian football player. This rugged background helped to put him in shape for some of the jobs he found out west. Soon after graduating in law from Queen's, the Magistrate came to Alberta wehere one of his first jobs was as horse wrangler. One of his favourite stories concerned the experience of rounding up horses at 60 below zero on the Prairies.

Before setting up in private law practice, Mr. Gibson taught school for a short time in Ponoka. Following his marriage to the former Lena MacPherson Paton, the young lawyer opened an office in Edmonton. Then from about 1917 until the middle 1930s, the Gibson family lived at Fort Saskatchewan. During these years the energetic lawyer made a trip down the Beaver in 1926, and another trip down the Saskatchewan River on a raft made from telephone poles.

    King's Counsel

On January 1, 1930 Mr. Gibson received the appointment of King's Counsel. As Crown Counsel and later Police Magistrate, he practised in Edmonton from 1935 until 1942. After two more moves, one to Fort Smith, the next to Yellowknife, the family came in 1950 to Dawson City when Mr. Gibson was appointed Commissioner of the Yukon Territory.

In this post he was succeeded by Frederick Fraser. Mr. Gibson remained in Dawson as Police Magistrate until 1952. Mr. and Mrs. Gibson moved to Whitehorse when the capital was moved here, and he remained as Police Magistrate until his death.

    Real Student

Everyone who knew him had the greatest respect for the magistrate. Said one local barrister, "He was a real student. He was a prodigious reader and had a most remarkable memory. He really should have been a professor." The Magistrate's main hobby was reading, chiefly biographies and history. He was also interested in educational problems and the welfare of the Indian population. While living at Fort Saskatchewan he took an active part in Indian affairs, and continued this interest during his years in the Yukon.

Besides liking to read, the Magistrate also enjoyed curling and up until last year he was active in that sport.

He is survived by his widow, two sons and three grandchildren. Mrs' Gibson now lives in Vancouver where she has been confined to a nursing home because of ill health. The elder son, John, also lives in Vancouver and the younger son, Murray, lives in Edmonton with his family.

At the funeral, held this afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, pallbearers were George van Roggen, N. V. X. Wylie, Inspector J. T. Parsons, RCMP, Murray Macfarlane, Dean Smith ad James Whyard.

As a mark of respect for the deceased, law firms in Whitehorse were closed today.

    Residence:
Bert was eight years old when his family moved from Perth Ontario to Lacombe Alberta in 1901. He would have taken his schooling in Lacombe and probably worked on the family farm before enlisting in the army at age 21. He went overseas in July 1915 with the 12th Mounted Rifles to fight in WWI. Between front-line tours of duty, he met up with his older brother Murray in England and while on furlough the two visited Janet Gibson in Kirkbean, Scotland. Janet was the last of our line living in Scotland. Bert was exposed to gas on the front that left him with a rheumatic heart, a condition from which he never fully recovered. After his discharge in Feb. 1918 Bert worked several years in Alberta for the Soldiers Settlement Board and later with the CNR Land Settlement Dept. (see photo of business card). In 1939, after the death of his older sister "Maggie", Bert apparently arranged the sale of the Lacombe farm and moved his family to where his wife grew up near Guelph Ont. Bert visited his neice Marjory in Renfrew until the 1950's.

H.B. Gibson Dies Suddenly at His Puslinch Farm Home
H.B. (Bert) Gibson, returning officer for Wellington South for every feeral election since 1949, died Monday of a heart attack at his Puslinch farm. He was 73 years old.

Mr. Gibson served as returning officer for the Wellington South Riding in the past seven federal elections, and was one of the oldest returning officers in Canada in terms of service.

Born in Perth, Ontario, Mr. Gibson moved to Alberta with his parents when he was a youngster. The Gibsons settled on a farm near the site of the present experimental farm at Lacombe, Alta., and Mr Gibson received his education in that province.

After 3 1/2 years overseas during the First World War, he returned home in the spring of 1918, but due to the effects of the war was unable to farm.

He accepted a position with the Soldiers' Settlement Board as an appraiser in the Peace River District, later switched to a job with the Canadian National Railway as a settlements officer for two years, then returned to the Soldiers' Settlement Board and worked in Edmonton.

In 1927 he married Annie Richardson, a native of Guelph, in a ceremony at Edmonton.

The Gibsons moved to Guelph in 1938 and settled at their RR1, Puslinch farm. From 1946 until the early 1960s, Mr. Gibson was on the advisory committee of the Veterans Land Administration in Guelph.

Active in Legion work, he was a member of Branch 234 of the Canadian Legion.
He was also a member of the International Order of Oddfellows and Dufferin Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Annie; one daugher, Mrs. Gerry Kruyf of Guelph, and two sons, George of Dryden and Alan of Puslinch. He was predeceased by one daughter, Barbara.

The body is at the George Wall Funeral Home, where service will be held at 2 pm Thursday.
