    After purchasing this property which adjoined his land grant, he built a sawmill.

    Land & Property:
    a territory covering the greater part of six townships; Palmerston, Barrie, Angelsea, Clarendon, Olden and Oso. These Mississippi limits became their major source of supply, but they were far up the river, around and beyond Mazinaw Lake, and the Mississippi watershed could be a very difficult place to drive logs. In many places, the river presented sharp turns, narrow channels, long shallow rapids and
    substantial water falls, while its tributary creeks, and the river itself, were frequently too shallow to float timber even during the freshet. Under the direction of McLaren, the Gillies-McLaren Company began building improvements at the most problematic locations; dredged channels, dams to control water levels, timber slides around rapids and falls, sluiceways and booms to corral the logs after they had passed through.

    Land & Property:
    Market conditions were changing. Demand for sawn lumber was proving more reliable than that for square timber, so Gillies-McLaren purchased the Gilmour mills at Carleton Place in 1869, completely rebuilding and then expanding them.

    Land & Property:
    Sod for $330,000, about $6,270,000 in modern value

    Gillies reinvested the proceeds with his sons, James, William, John Jr. and
    David, in timber limits along the Madawaska River and mills at Braeside. Peter McLaren continued to harvest the Mississippi River limits, expand improvements for driving logs, and produce lumber at the Carleton Place mill.

    John McLatchie, one of the oldest and best-known Dominion land surveyors in Western Canada, and who has been for the past 30 years connected with the development of the west, died at the Holy Cross hospital Monday.

    Mr. McLatchie, who was born near Ottawa and practiced as a surveyor there, came to the west in the employ of the Dominion government in 1872, and for many years was engaged on important survey work connected with the base lines for the subdivision system of the west. In 1878 he gave up surveying and went in for trading with the Indians and he had a post on the Elbow river above the present city of Calgary and was in this district during the winter when Bishop McDougall perished on Nose Hill. Returning to the practice of surveying in 1881 he worked for the Dominion government until 1900, when he moved to British Columbia making Nelson his headquarters.

    In 1885 Mr. McLatchie served during the Riel rebellion as a lieutenant in the intelligence corps commanded by J. D. Dennis, now of the C.P.R. staff in Calgary, and was awarded a medal with clasps for the different engagements. In British Columbia Mr. McLatchie carried on many impotant surveys for the government, the railway companies and mining corporations, and he was recognized as the leading member of his profession in Southern British Columbia. Two daughters and a son are left to mourn the untimely demise of their father whose body is being sent to his old home in Ottawa for interment.

    John Gillies built a saw mill on the land at Lot nine Concession three of Lanark, and began cutting lumber in 1842. This marks the origins of Gillies Bros. and Co. John Gillies kept the sawmill at Lanark operational for many years, shipping square timber down the Ottawa River to Montreal and Quebec for shipment overseas, and also sold sawn lumber locally and in the Kingston area. In addition to the sawmill, John Gillies expanded on the site and operated as well a grist mill, an oatmeal mill and a carding mill. (National Library of Canada)

    ARNPRIOR, July 1. - (Special)

    Tribute was paid here this afternoon to the memory of one widely known throughout the Ottawa Valley, Henry Guilles, aged 82 years. In the early days of Lanark County, four brothers came from Lanark, in Scotland, and their names became inscribed indelibly on Canada's industrial life. They were George, James, David and John Gillies, names associated with one of Canada's large industrial enterprises.

    Henry Gillies was the son of George and he, too lumbered, but not to as large an extent as other relatives of the name. He came from Lanark to the Ottawa Valley about three-quarters of a century ago and more than 50 years ago he was married to Mary MacBride, sister of the late Hon Morrison M. MacBride.

    Mr. Gillies was 82 year of age, a citizen of many splendid qualities, a staunch member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and well known and highly respected by a wide circle.

    Surviving are his widow; one son, Arch Gillies, of Dollard, Sask.; and two daughters, Mrs. Alfred Cotie, of Arnprior, and Mrs. Garfield Barrie, of McNab Township, all of whom were here for the funeral.

    Mr. Gillies had been ill only a few days and died in an Ottawa hospital. Rev. L. H. Fowler, of Renfrew, conducted the services at the home and the graveside.

    Peacefully at the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew Ontario on Monday evening. Mary Cotie formerly of Arnprior in her 103rd year. Wife of the late Alfred Cotie. Beloved mother of David (Bernice), Mary (Burton) Borthwick, Anne (Stephen) Dixon and Helen (John) Shea. Grandmother of John (Tammy), James (Karen), Jeffrey (Valerie), Ann Marie (Bryan) and 6 great grandchildren. Predeceased by siblings David, Archie, Margaret and Florence. Her family wish to thank the caregivers at Bonnechere Manor, our mother's home for many years, for their excellent and devoted care. Thanks also to Dr. Dick and Dr. DiPaolo, her valued physicians during these years. Arrangements by the BOYCE FUNERAL HOME LTD., 138 Daniel St. N., Arnprior. A private family service will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the family plot in Arnprior Albert Street Cemetery.
