    Died:
    he death of Mrs. James Henderson which occurred on Thursday of last week takes away another Pocahontas county's pioneer settler to join the ranks of those who have gone before. She was a devout Christian, a kind neighbor and a loving wife and mother. The entire community joins in extending its sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment was in Powhatan Cemetery. Following is a sketch of her life as given us by Mr. Henderson.

    The deceased was born in Lanark County, Ontario, May 27, 1834. Her parents were Elizabeth Nairn Penman (1808-1851) and William Penman (1807-1885). She united which the Presbyterian Church in her youth and continues a faithful member of that church all her life. In 1861, she moved to the county of Perth, 400 miles west of her birthplace. She was married to James Henderson on September 15, 1863. Three children were born in Ontario. Elizabeth, who married S. L. Horsman; Catherine, who married L. N. Parradee; and George [married Blanche Voris Miller], all of whom reside in this vicinity. [Elizabeth & Catherine are twins.]

    In the Spring of 1866, the family moved to Pocahontas County, Iowa, settling in Powhatan township, and have made it their home since that time. Five children were born to them in Powhatan township, four sons and one daughter: William, John [married Ella Myra Harmon], James [married Eva May Harmon], Charles [married Myrtle H. Barrick], and Janet, who married Harry McFadzen. [Janet and John are twins.] She lived to see all grown to maturity and settled in homes of their own, seven of them married, one still single but has a home of his own, which was a great comfort to her. [William "Will" was single until one month after his mother died, he then married Edna Mae Meyers.]

    She has been a great sufferer for the past five years, but never complained, bearing it with patience and Christian fortitude. On the morning of January 8, 1903 she fell asleep in Jesus, to awake no more until the resurrection morn, when she will hear the welcome voice of her Lord, sayhing to her, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of thy Lord."

    She leave behind to mourn her departure a husband, five sons, three daughters, and nineteen grandchildren.

    Family stories claim that Elizabeth moved to Duluth, MN from Ontario after being encouraged to do so by her Uncle Dave. She worked as a nurse. Elizabeth is supposedly buried in Judge Hale's plot.
