    His political persuasion was Republican. At Ripon he served two terems as County Supervisor from the first ward; several terms on the Common Council; and one term as mayor. At DePere he has served ten years as President of the village of West DePere and two years as member of the Council in East DePere.

    ?/i?William Workman Sr. was born in Prestwick, Aryshire, Scotland, 22 June 1822, came to New York at the age of twenty years; came to Ceresco in 1844 (within kWisconsin Phalanx) and lived here until 1868 when he moved to DePere and has remained ever since. He was a charter member of Ripon Lodge F&AM #95 in 1857 and of Ripon Chapter #30 RAM and of Fond du Lac Commandery. Burial here under the auspices of the Lodge. He leaves wife and son William and two daughters, Mrs David Thomas of Ripon and Mrs LS Wilcox of DePere. He sold his drug business at DePere two years ago and retired from active business although still identified with the DePere El L&P Company. He died at DePere WI 28 January 1900.

    William married Margaret Anne Miller about 1850.     William passed through the subordient chairs and was Worshipful Master of the DePere Masonic Lodge. He was Chief Templar of the Temple of Honor at DePere.
    The first record book of the Ripon Lodge #95. F&AM shows that while not a charter member, he soon took his three degrees in Masonry; 29 Dec 1857, 8 Jan 1858, and 12 Jan 1858.
    William was a member of the West DePere Fire Department, serving four years as Chief.

    At age 20 William was proficient in the use of nearly all band musical insturments and accepted a position with the Blakeley Concert & Oratorio Company as tenor singer. Later he was a member of the Harry Robinson Minstrel Company, as a tenor singer, traveling with them for four years. William was so versatile that he could fill replace any absent member on a moments notice during Company performances.

    Occupation:
    In February he left the DePere Agricultural Works to become associated with his brother-in-law David Thomas in the breeding of trotting horses on a farm six and a half miles southwest of Ripon. Among the trotting horses bred here, one, 'Barney F' made a record of 2:29 1/2 when five years old. Mr Workman also brought to Brown County 'Achilles', #2535 in Wallaces's Trotting Register, the first registered trotting-bred stallion brought to the county.

    The Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company carried risks averaging a million and a half annually.
