    (Research):Chief of Clan Colquhoun
    15th of Colquhoun & 17th of Luss

From the 1844 original edition of Sir William Fraser's The Chiefs of Colquhoun and their Country:

Alexander Colquhoun was 15th Laird of Colquhoun & 17th of Luss from 1592-1617. It does not appear that Alexander was ever knighted, so he did not have the title of "Sir."

Alexander was the 3rd son. His eldest brother, Humphrey, was murdered at 27 by MacGregors and MacFarlands. His other elder
brother, John, died prior to 1592. His parent and siblings were noted as:

Sir John Colquhoun only had children by his 2nd wife, Agnes Boyd;  3 sons & 2 daughters:
    1. Sir Humphrey, who succeeded him.
    2. John, 2nd son, who had a reputation for harassing the tenants of neighboring lands.
    3. Alexander, who succeeded his brother, Humphrey
    4. Jean, who married Sir Mathew Stewart of Minto as his 2nd wife.
    5. Margaret, who married Sir James Edmonstone of Duntreath, Knight.

And he had an illegitimate son, Gavin, who was given land by his "brother-germain", Alexander Colquhoun of Luss. In this agreement, Gavin was referred to as the '"natural son" of Sir John Colquhoun of Luss.

Humphrey, the prior laird and Alexander's brother, had not paid taxes to King James VI that were owed by all the lairds of the land and had his lands in Luss taken from him and given to the Lord of the Privy Seal, Walter Commandator of Blantyre. Humphrey had to pay him 5000 merks for the return of the lands.

Alexander acted as official tutor to his nieces, Jean, Margaret, and Annas, the daughters of his deceased brother, Humphrey.

As we have heard, Jean, was raped by the marauders who killed her father, and did not long survive him, perhaps due to the injuries she suffered that day.

The Colquhouns were feuding with the MacFarlanes, the MacGregors, and the Buchanans. In order to settle the Buchanan feud, Alexander Colquhoun married the daughter of Sir George Buchanan of that Ilk, Helen Buchanan. That seems to have finally settled affairs betwixt the 2 clans. The marriage contract was signed on 25 Oct 1596.

The deadly feuds in the Highlands continued, with Alexander Colquhoun among them, and King James finally brought the various heads of clan before him and made them find others who would be responsible for them financially if they broke the peace. This didn't really work and the feuding went on into the 1600's.

In 1600, Alexander's great-uncle, William Chirnside, Pastor of Luss, finally died and Alexander gave the parish church and its' living to Duncan Arrall.

The Colquhouns finally settled with the MacFarlanes in 1603 but the MacGregors were a worse problem for them.

In Dec 1602, there was the deadly MacGregor attack in Glenfinlas.

On 7 Feb 1603, Glenfruin and its' bloody nightmare for the Colquhouns occurred. The MacGregors so horrified the King and the country with their attack on the Colquhouns that the name Gregor and MacGregor were abolished. MacGregors were hunted down and put on trial, others simply put to death. And this went on for more than a decade.

In 1616, Sir Alexander Colquhoun of Luss, was gifted land in Ireland from the King. He was given a portion of 1000 English acres, in the precinct of Portlough, Barony of Raphoe, County of Donegal, Ireland, which became known as the Manor of Corkagh.

His obligations as to the Irish lands were that 1) he would annually pay the King (after the 1st two years), ?5, 6 shillings, 8 cents; 2) make upon the land within 2 years a strong Court or Bawn; 3) have ready in his house at all times a convenient store of arms, with which to furnish a competent number of men for their defense; 4)  Place, within 2 years, a competent number of English or inland Scots tenants upon his portion; 5) Be present, or place someone to be present, for 5 years upon the property; and 6) Enter a bond of ?200 for due performance of these conditions.

Alexander sent his daughter, Nancy, and her husband, John McAuselan (younger son of the Baron McAuselan), to live on the land and to develop it to the standards of the Crown.

In Alexander's first will, he gave the Irish inheritance of Corkagh Manor to Nancy and John McAuselan, but just before his death (in fact on 16 May 1617), Alexander changed his will to give over the land to his son, Adam, instead.

Alexander Colquhoun died on 23 May 1617.

Alexander Colquhoun and his wife, Helen Buchanan had 6 sons and 5 daughters (listed as males first, then females):
    1.  John, who succeeded him and was created a baronet.
    2.  Humphrey of Balvie, who inherited the Colquhoun estate at Balvie from his father.
    3.  Alexander
    4.  Walter, who with his brother, George, moved to Sweden and became cannon makers to King Adolphus Gustavus.
    5.  Adam, who inherited the lands in Ireland
    6.  George, who went to Sweden. See Walter.
    7.  Jean, who married Allan, 5th Lord Cathcart in 1626. She remarried upon his death to Sir Duncan Campbell, Baronet, of Auchinbrecht. Her 3rd husband was Sir William Hamilton, Knight, and 3rd son of James, Earl of Abercorn.
    8.  Nancy, who married a McAuley and moved to Ireland.
    9.  Katharine, who married Sir John Mure of Auchindraine, Knight.
    10. Helen
    11. Mary

    -----
Edited to Add (Story about Alexander's 2 older brothers, Humphrey and John, and Dunglass Castle):

Dunglass was once the chief stronghold of the Clan Colquhoun. From 1439 onwards it was the seat of Sir John Colquhoun, Lord Chamberlain of Scotland and one of the most distinguished men of his time. The tower-house is said by Tranter to have been the work of Sir Humphrey Colquhoun, 16th of Luss, who, he goes on to tell us "in 1592 was slain at Bannachra (a castle now much more ruined than this, that lies between Helensburgh and Loch Lomond) by MacFarlanes and MacGregors as he went upstairs to bed, a tampered with servant carrying a light which intermittently silhouetted the laird at the stairway's arrow-slit windows - unneighbourly conduct but phenomenal shooting!"

An intriguing story, about which I immediately wanted to know more! Here's the full story:

In July 1592, a party of Macgregors and Macfarlanes came down upon the low country of Dumbartonshire, and committed vast ravages, especially upon the territory of the Colquhouns. At the head of his vassals, and accompanied by several of the gentlemen of the neighbourhood, Sir Humphry Colquhoun attacked the invaders, and after a bloody conflict, which was only put an end to at nightfall, he was overpowered by his assailants, and forced to retreat. To quote from Mr Fraser's Chiefs of the Colquhouns ?

"He betook himself to the castle of Bannachra, a stronghold which had been erected by the Colquhouns at the foot of the north side of the hill of Bennibuie, in the parish of Luss. A party of the Macfarlanes and Macgregors pursued him, and laid siege to his castle. One of the servants who attended the knight was of the same surname as himself. He had been tampered with by the assailants of his master, and treacherously made him their victim. The servant, while conducting his master to his room up a winding stair of the castle, made him by preconcert, a mark for arrows of the clan who pursued him, by throwing the glare of a paper torch upon his person when opposite a loophole. A winged arrow, darted from its string with a steady aim, pierced the unhappy knight to the heart, and he fell dead on the spot. The fatal loophole is still pointed out, but the stair, like its unfortunate lord, has crumbled into dust".

The story goes that the death of the chief was brought about by his second brother, John. At any rate an entry in the diary of Robert Birrell, burgess of Edinburgh, dated 30th November, 1592, mentions that "John Cachoune was beheidit at the Crosse at Edinburghe for murthering of his auen brother the Lairde of Lusse." Further confirmation of the tradition that John was the guilty man is to be found in the fact that Sir Humphrey was succeeded, not by his second but by his third brother, Sir Alexander Colquhoun.

    From his English Wikipedia page:

    Sir John Colquhoun, 1st Baronet
    Born c. 1596
    Nationality Scotland
    Known for Baronet
Sir John Colquhoun (c.1596 - aft. 8 November 1647),[1] Sixteenth Lord Colquhoun and the Eighteenth of Luss,[2] was the first Colquhoun baronet of Nova Scotia, Canada. The Baronetage of the Colquhoun clan of Nova Scotia was established on 30 August 1625.[3]

Colquhoun was born in Scotland, probably in 1596, as his parents were married in 1595.[2] He was the eldest son of Sir Alexander Colquhoun and Lady Helen Buchanan.[4]

In 1620, he married Lady Lilias Graham, eldest daughter of John Graham, Fourth Earl of Montrose, and elder sister of the Great Montrose,[5] which was what her younger brother, James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose, came to be known, in addition to being the Marquis of Montrose. In 1632 Sir John was accused of absconding his wife's sister, Lady Catherine Graham. It was alleged that he had used witchcraft and sorcery to accomplish this. As a fugitive he was excommunicated and his estates forfeited. [6]

When and where John died is unknown. He was alive on 8 November 1647.[7]

John Colquhoun of the Clan Colquhoun was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1596, the eldest son of Sir Alexander Colquhoun. His father, for reasons not apparent, gave him properties and their rents beginning as early as January 3rd, 1602, at which time he would have been only 6 years old. King James granted him a charter of the lands of Auchintorly and Dunnerbuck only a month later.

Soon after the death of his father in 1617, John began traveling abroad. Letters place him in France toward the end of 1617 and in Heidelberg in June 1619. He returned to Scotland prior to the next summer to marry Lilias Graham, the eldest daughter of the Great Montrose, which occurred on July 6th, 1620. She bore him 3 sons and 3 daughters between 1621 and 1630.

John was a member of the Scottish Parliament that opened June 1st, 1621, which is noted for ratifying the Five Articles of the General Assembly of the Church and on August 30th, 1625, John Colquhoun was made the 1st Baronet of Nova Scotia by the King.

John became infatuated with Katherine Graham, his wife's pretty sister, sometime prior to 1632 because it was in September of that year that they suddenly eloped. Humiliated by the abandonment of one sister (Lilias) and the 'abduction' of another (Katherine), the Laird Montrose uses his favor with the king have John Colquhoun charged with Incest and Malfeasance (Sorcery). Intimate relations with the brother or sister of your spouce was considered Incest under Scotish law and the charge of Sorcery implied that the Lady Katherine would never have run off unless she had been enchanted, thus keeping the dignity and honor of the Graham family intact. Both Incest and Sorcery were capital offenses punishable by death.

When John fails to appear by January 11th, 1633, he was declared a fugitive. He was excommunicated from the church and by order of the crown forfeited his title, estate and rents; which were assigned to Sir Robert Spot, the first and last Viscount of Belhaven. John Colquhoun's brother Humphrey was able to re-purchase these properties (on November 20th, 1633) before Sir Robert was able to exercise control of them. John and Katherine were in London during this time.

There are three plausible reasons why Sir John and the Lady Katherine would have decided to elope in 1632. They could have been so infatuated with each other that John was willing to give up his land, titles, reputation and family (and she hers). Other accounts suggest that one of their romantic indescressions may have been observed and they believed they were about to be publically exposed. Or finally, the Lady Katherine may have become pregnant with John's child.

William Colquhoun (1633-1675) claimed in his later years that he was the son of Sir John Colquhoun. While there are no official records to prove this relationship, William's birth occurs not long after John and Katherine's elopement and Sir John would have had motive to keep the existance of any child he had with Katherine a secret since such offspring could have been used as proof of his 'incest' with Katherine. It should be noted that William is not a name used by the Colquhouns, but is common within the Graham family.

In April of 1647, John's brothers ask the Scottish Presbytery of Dumbarton to rescind the excommunication suffered by John. By this time the church and state had become one and the enemies of Laird Montrose had risen to power. John's confession, which occured on May 11th, contained many tears and much regret but he declined to confess any specific wrongdoing with the Lady Katherine until the conditions of his estate had been settled. While there are conflicting reports of whether John was allowed to rejoin the church, it does not appear that the church nor the state had any appetite for persecuting him further. The following year, John sees his titles, estates and rents, which had been held by his brother Humphrey during his absence, passed on to his eldest son John (also known as the Black Cock of the West) who then becomes the next Laird of Colquhoun and Luss. John never makes his promised confessions regarding his conduct with the Lady Katherine or the lost years, choosing instead to remain mute on the subject.

Sir John Colquhoun dies sometime between February 1649 and May 1650. His burial place is not known.

Alexander Colquhoun died on 23 May 1617.

Alexander Colquhoun and his wife, Helen Buchanan had 6 sons and 5 daughters is parentage, from the 1844 book by Sir William Fraser, The Chiefs of Colquhoun and their Country:

    10. Helen
    11. Mary

Regardless of the disappointment on not inheriting Corkagh, Nancy and John continued living at the Manor and managing it for Adam Colquhoun (Nancy's brother). The new Laird of Luss, Nancy's brother, John... realizing what expenses Adam we have at Corkagh, agreed upon a sufficient provision for his brother Adam, to maintain the Estate.

Acting under a Royal Commission, Captain Nicholas Pynner made a visit to Corkagh in late 1618, and said this:

The Precinct of Portlough, appointed to Scottish undertakers, 1000 acres...the Laird of Luss hath 1000 acres called Corkagh. Upon this land there is a Bawne of clay and stone, 60 feet square, 10 feet high with 2 flankers and a poor house within it, which is thatched. I find planted and estated upon this land: 2 Freeholders, one having 300 acres, one having 100 acres; 3 Lessees, one having 330 acres, one having 300 acres, one having 195 acres; 5 Cottagers. Each of these have a house and garden plot. Total: 10 families, who with their undertenants are able to make 26 men, wherof 5 of the best have taken the Oath of Supremacy.

About 1621, Adam Colquhoun married Christian Lindsay, probably in Dunbartonshire, where they both lived. (I found a reference to Adam Colquhoun "who married a daughter of Lindsay of Bonhill"...Bonhill is a town in the Vale of Leven area of West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It is sited on the Eastern bank of the River Leven, on the opposite bank from the larger town of Alexandria. This makes total sense!). Other references refer to Christian as being from Bonniel, which is obviously a corruption of Bonhill.

They had at least 2 children, Robert (born about 1622) and Helen (born about 1625). There may have been other children but they did not survive infancy.

Christian Lindsay died about 1629 in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire. Adam was a merchant there.

Shortly after 1629, at the death of Adam Colquhoun's wife, Christian Lindsay, he took his 2 children to Ireland for his sister, Nancy, to raise and look after.

In 1630, Adam Colquhoun signed over his Irish Land Grant to his son, Robert Colquhoun.  In 1641, young Robert married his cousin, Katherine McAuselan, daughter of his aunt and uncle Nancy and John McAuselan.

Calendar of Patent and Close Rolls (1630): Letters of Patent and Denizen, to Robert Colquhoun and grant to Him, his Heirs & Assigns, for ever, as an Undertaker of the Province of Ulster, of the small proportion of Corkagh, in the Precinct of Portlough, Barony of Raphoe, County of Donegal, containing 1000 acres, in Free & Common Soccage; The lands are created into a Manor, to be called the Manor of Corkagh.

Thus did Robert Colquhoun come to stand in the place of his grandfather, Sir Alexander, Laird of Luss, as an undertaker of the Province of Ulster, in the year of 1630.

And so the Irish land stayed in the joint Colquhoun-McAuselan family after all.
