    A well known citizen died on New Year's day in the person of Mr. James Thornton. Mr. Thornton had been ill a long time, and a few days ago became a victim of pheumonia, which caused his death.

    Up to about 1880, Mr Thornton farmed in his adopted township and then moved into town. For many years he engaged in a piano, organ and sewing machine agency. Last fall he bought a farm on the second line of Drummond, which was since his home.

    He was twice married, his first wife, a daughter of the late Thomas Keays, died many years ago. Mrs Thornton is a daughter of Mr. Darou, of the 11th line of Bathurst, and is left with five daughters and two sons.

    Mr Thornton was a member of the Workmen an Independent Foresters, carrying insurance of $2,000 and $1,000 in each respectively. He had a very wide acquaintance and everyone has a good word for him.

    The funeral took place on Tuesday to Elmwood Cemetery, and was very largely attended. The two societies of which he was a member, attended in a body. The services were conducted by Rev. Canon Muckleston.
