Athens boy killed in farm accident
ATHENS -- Craig Allen Rice, 3 1/2 years old, was dead on arrival at a local doctor's office at 7 p.m. Saturday after he had been run over by a fertilizer spreader attached to a pick-up truck operated by his father, Richard Russell Rice.
The accident happened on the family farm on 6 Mil Road. The vehicles were being backed at the time, according to State Police from the Tekonsha Post who investigated. The child's chest was crushed.
Craig, who would have been four years old Sept. 21, is survived by his parents, Richard and Eva May (Baird) Rice; brothers, Richard Lee, 6 and Garry Russell, 5; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Baird of 821 Allen, Ypsilanti and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lloyd Pyke of 830 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Spencer Funeral home, the Rev. Gerald Thompson of Trinity Lutheran Church, Battle Creek; burial in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

ATHENS -- Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Spencer Funeral Home for Craig Allan[sic] Rice, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rice, of 6 Mile Road. Craig was crushed in a farm accident Saturday evening.
The Rev. Gerald Thompson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Battle Creek, will officiate and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.
Surviving besides his parents are brothers, Richard and Gary at home.
