Died:
Death called one of the first settlers of Orange township and one of the oldest citizens of Alexandria when Andrew Purdon passed away Saturday night, February 4, at 11:30 o'clock at the Carlquist residence in this city, aged 86 years. Mr. Purdon had lived in Alexandria since 1873 and was one of the best known and well liked citizens of this community. Death was caused by pneumonia after an illness of about two weeks.
Andrew Purdon was born in Lanark county, Canada, the son of William and Isabelle Chalmers Purdon. He grew to manhood there and came to Minnesota in 1868, taking up a claim in Orange township. After proving up on the homestead he moved to Alexandria, building a home on the present site of the Mrs. C. J. Carlquist residence. He was married in Alexandria on November 4, 1869, to Annie Walker, who had been a neighbor in Ontario and who had come to Minnesota with her parents about the time that Mr. Purdon came here. Three children were born of this union: Henry and Ida K., who died in childhood, and William D., who is a vice president of the Guardian Trust Company of Cleveland, Ohio. A brother, David Purdon, lives at Wahpeton, N.D., and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Scott, lives at McDonald's Corners, Ontario. A niece, Mrs. Lucy P. Barber of Wahpeton, N.D., who lived with Mr. and Mrs. Purdon from childhood also survives him.
Mr. Purdon was engaged for many years in the wagonmaker's trade. In 1908 Mrs. Purdon passed away and after her death Mr. Purdon sold his home to Mrs. C. J. Carlquist, reserving one room for himself, so that was his home during all of the sixty years of his life in Alexandria.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Congregational church, of which he was the oldest member. Rev. Harry Blunt officiated. Burial was in Kinkead cemetery. The pallbearers were: A. A. Secord, H. E. Leach, Dr. L. M. Boyd, Howard Stevens, E. J. Brandt and Will Haberer.
