Mr. Alonzo Luce, Sr., died at four o'clock p.m. Wednesday aged 79 years and 9 months. He was a well to do farmer, living near Newville. He came to California in 1853 and settled in Sonoma county. He afterwards farmed near Princeton two years, and came from there to Newville forty-two years ago. He leaves a wife, five sons and three daughters, all grown. They are John, Isaac, Alonzo, Guy M. and Zachariah Luce, Mrs. James Millsaps, Mrs. H. Milligan and Mrs. Robt. Gibbons. - Transcribed by E.

PASSES AWAY AS OLD YEAR DIES

Mrs. Henry Milligan of Newville passed away last Sunday night following a long siege of illness due to pneumonia. Mrs. Milligan died at the home of her son-in-law near Corning, where she was visiting her daughter when taken ill. At the time of her daughter's death several weeks ago, she was getting along very nicely, but recently the dread disease took a turn for the worse and she passed away Sunday night.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at one o'clock, interment being in the Newville cemetery, beside the new grave of her daughter.

PIONEER WOMAN OF TEHAMA COUNTY PASSES AWAY AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF SUFFERING WITH PNEUMONIA

DIED ? Monday, January 1, 1917, at one o'clock a.m., at the home of Tom Flournoy, her son-in-law, Mrs. Henry Milligan, after several weeks illness with double pneumonia.
Mrs. Milligan, who was the wife of Henry Milligan, well known in this part of Tehama county for a great many years was born in New York, August 5, 1861. Her parents Mr. And Mrs. Alonzo Luce, came to California in the same year and she has been a resident of Tehama and Glenn counties for the past forty-two years, where her friends were limited only by the number of people in the section where she lived.
The funeral was held at Newville, their home, Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock. Rev. T. M. Jones officiating, and interment was made in the Newville Cemetery, where the Luce family have a burial plot. Transcribed by E.

MRS. JAMES MILLSAPS LAID TO REST AT MILLSAPS ON WEDNESDAY

Mrs. James Millsaps, who had been in ill health for a long term of years, passed away on December 25th, and the remains were brought to Orland on Wednesday to be interred in the cemetery at the old home at Millsaps. The remains were taken from the train at this place, and were escorted by a number of old neighbors and friends to Millsaps, where services were held at the grave, Rev. J. W. Winkley officiating.
Mrs. Millsaps, whose maiden name was Alice Luce was born near Santa Rosa on February 14, 1864. While still a small child she came with her parents to Newville, and there, on April 23, 1884, she was married to James Millsaps. Seven children came to bless the union, six of whom are still living: Mrs. Howard Spangler, Arthur Millsaps, Mrs. Frank Gerber, Mrs. Hayden Cushman, and Florence and Alta Millsaps. Luce Services to Be Held in Willows On Friday

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sweet mortuary in Willows for Isaac D. Luce, prominent rancher and lifelong resident of the Newville district, who died at this home Tuesday morning. The Masonic lodge of Corning of which Luce was one of the oldest members, will participate in the rites.
A native of Newville, where he was born in 1866, Luce had spent his entire 79 years in that district. He joined the Newville Masonic lodge, which was later consolidated with the lodge at Corning, and held membership in that order for over half a century. He had recently been awarded a 50-year jewel by the Corning lodge.
Son of pioneer residents of the district, he was one of Glenn county's oldest residents, and one whose life span covered nearly the entire period since this section was first settled.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Helen Luce, and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Tom Ellis, Mrs. Lee Ellis, of Elk Creek; Hugh Luce, Paskenta; Mrs. Evan Williams, Corning, Mrs. Mrs. Cecil Church, Corning, and Lester Luce, Elk Creek. There are also 23 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and two brothers surviving, Zack Luce, of Newville, and Guy Luce, San Francisco.

JOHN LUCE, PIONEER PASKENTA RESIDENT PASSES SATURDAY

John Luce, 77, pioneer resident of Paskenta and Newville, passed away Saturday evening.
A native of Glenn county, he was born in 1867, and has resided in this area all of his life.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. Agnes Wahl of Red Bluff, a granddaughter, Donna Rae Wahl, a grandson Ensign Karl Wahl, Jr., who is attending a Diesel Engineering school at North Carolina State College, Raleigh, North Carolina, and three brothers, Isaac, D. Luce of Elk Creek, Jack Luce of Newville and Guy Luce of Calaveras county. There are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Newville cemetery.

John Luce of Newville, died Saturday night at the hospital at Willows where he had been ill for several days. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Newville cemetery with Rev. H. S. Saxby, of Willows officiating.
John Luce was born at Newville on Dec. 3, 1867, and lived there his entire life. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Carl Wahl, of Red Bluff, and two grandchildren. Ensign Carl Wahl, Jr. stationed at Raleigh, N.C. and Donna Rae Wahl, of Red Bluff. There are also three brothers, Zack Luce, of Newville, Isaac D. Zachariah Luce Services Held This Afternoon

Funeral services are being held this afternoon here for Zachariah Luce, 71, who was found dead Friday in his car on the road leading from his ranch. Death which was apparently due to a heart attack had occurred as he was on his way to town but he had planned to go to the home of friends Thursday night and no concern was felt until he failed to return Friday. Archie Kinney started out to look for him and found his car off the road just over a little hill from the home near Newville where he was born and raised and spent his entire life. Following services at the Sweet chapel in Orland, there will be burial services in the Newville cemetery. Rev. H. S. Saxby of Willows is officiating in both chapel and graveside services.
Mr. Luce was born near Newville September 20, 1876, youngest child of Alonzo and Elizabeth Luce, who were among the earliest pioneers of the district. When the family holdings were divided up in 1907 after the death of his parents, he took his share and had farmed it and made it his family home ever since.
Surviving him is his wife, Edith, formerly Miss Edith Lockwood of Elk Creek, who is also a member of a prominent pioneer family of the county. There is also one brother, Guy Luce, surviving.
Mr. Luce was for many years constable of the Newville district, which in recent years has been consolidated with the Orland Judicial township. Transcribed by E.

Ira A. Milligan, Newville Native, Dies in Hospital

Funeral services are being held at the Sweet chapel here at 2 p.m. today for Ira Arthur Milligan, a native of Glenn County, who died early Friday in Glenn General Hospital.
Mr. Milligan, who was 83, had been a patient in the hospital since April 1963. He was born in Newville on Aug. 18, 1880 when Glenn County was still a part of Colusa County. He grew up in Newville and lived in Glenn County all of his life except for two years spent in Sacramento.
He farmed the home ranch in Newville for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. Milligan moved to Orland from Paskenta 29 years ago and were in the dairy business here until he retired 16 years ago. In recent years they have made their home at 361 South St.
Survivors are his wife, Lizzie, of Orland; a daughter Mrs. Wilma Burrow, Orland; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Idell Burt, Paskenta, and Mrs. Lois Schumacher, Sacramento; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren.

MRS. TOM FLOURNOY SUCCUMBS TO A FEW DAYS OF PNEUMONIA

Mrs. Anna Flournoy, wife of Tom Flournoy, died at the family home, twelve miles west of this city, Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock, after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia.
The remains were taken to Newville, and the funeral and interment will be held there at one o'clock this afternoon.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Milligan and sister of Ira Milligan, of Newville, and besides these she is survived by the husband and two children: one boy, Henry, twelve years old, and one daughter, Irma six years old.
She was thirty-three the 16th of last January, was one of the most popular women of the community in which she lived, well known and universally esteemed, and her early death will be a source of keen regret to numberless friends in southern Tehama county. - Transcribed by E.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Millsaps, (her mother was a Luce), she was brought by her parents at the age of 3 to the Chrome area. She lived for a time at Sites with her first husband, Hayden Cushman. Feb. 4, 1941 she married Loyd Powell. The couple lived in the Maxwell area until 1965 when they went to Nevada City, finally coming to Willows in 1971.
Mrs. Powell was an active member in the First Baptist Church there. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a Past Grand Deputy Matron O.E.S.
Surviving her are her husband Loyd C. of Willows; and two sisters, Florence Robinson of Paradise and Alta Baker of Red Bluff.
Funeral services were held at F. D. Sweet and Son Chapel followed by interment in the Willows Masonic Cemetery. - Transcribed by M.

Huge Luce, 83, dies at home

Hugh Luce, well known Flournoy rancher and horseman, was found dead in his home yesterday. He was 83 years of age and had resided in Glenn and Tehama Counties all his life.
He was born Nov. 4, 1898 in Newville to pioneer parents, Isaac and Helen Cushman Luce.
He was a member of Tehama County Farm Bureau and Olivet Lodge, No. 205, F. and A. M.
He is survived by five daughters, Arabelle Maitia, Nita Pitkin, Charlotte Humphrey and Barbara Humphrey, all of Flournoy, and Ardell Pitkin of Red Bluff; a sister, Marguerite Williams of Corning; 22 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
His wife, Neva Luce, died June 1980.
Memorial services will be held in the family plot in Paskenta Cemetery Sunday at 2 p.m. with Olivet Lodge, No. 205 officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Brothers Mortuary. - Transcribed by M

Mrs. Agnes Wahl Is Buried Today

Mrs. Agnes Wahl, widely known, member of a pioneer family, was buried today at Newville cemetery in a family plot, following services held in Red Bluff with Rev. W. V. Barney of the First Christian church in Red Bluff, officiating.
Mrs. Wahl died Friday evening in a Red Bluff hospital following several months of serious illness. She had undergone two major operations.
Mrs. Wahl is survived by her husband, Karl Wahl, well known Red Bluff P.G.& E. official, a son, Karl Wahl Jr., of Chico and a daughter, Miss Donna Wahl, a student at the University of California, Davis.
Deceased was a member of two pioneer Tehama county families. She was born August 15, 1900 on a ranch located between Paskenta and Newville, of which she was still owner at time of her death. It was settled in an early day by her grandfather, George Washington Lantz, who when he first came to California from Illinois was engaged in the cattle business with General Bidwell of Chico. Mrs. Wahl's father was John Luce, member of an old time family in the same section of the country.
Mrs. Wahl was a prominent business woman. She operated her cattle ranch and participated in many community activities. For a number of years she has handled all advance sales for the Red Bluff Round-up association.
Besides being a member of Molino Chapter, Mrs. Wahl was also affiliated with Berendos Parlor, No. 23, N.D.G.W. - Transcribed by E.

Nita was the oldest daughter born on April 3, 1923 in Corning, CA to Hugh and Neva Luce. She was raised with her four sisters; Arabelle, Ardell, Charlotte and Barbara in Flournoy. She attended local schools and graduated from Corning Union High School in 1941. She married Gayle Pitkin of Red Bluff on October 6, 1941. Nita and Gayle made their home in Flournoy, where Gayle worked for Crane Mills and ranched in Flournoy. Nita was a homemaker. They had 8 children; Sheralea, Carolyn, Robert, Kathleen, Toni, Marsha, Brent and Maureen. She loved family get togethers and visiting. Survivors include; Sherry Vance of Flournoy, Connie Walker (Ted) of Red Bluff, Robert Pitkin (Deb) of Flournoy, Toni Ross of Klamath Falls, OR, Marsha Pitkin (Don) of Grenada, CA, Brent Pitkin (Helen) of Corning and Maureen McGehee of Corning. 26 Grandchildren, 31 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren, and a large extended family. A lifelong resident of Tehama County, she was born Aug. 21, 1926. She graduated from Flournoy Elementary School and Corning High School.

Surviving are: husband of 48 years, Allen Pitkin; son, Gary Pitkin of Sparks, Nevada; daughter, Darla Farley of Sparks; sisters, Nita Pitkin, Arabell Maitia, Charlotte Humphrey and Barbara Humphey, all of Flournoy and grandchildren Reese and Amber Pitkin of Sparks.

She was predeceased by grandson, Justin Farley.

Charlotte Humphrey passed away at her Flournoy home on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008. She was 80.

She was born on Dec. 4, 1927, in the Flournoy-Paskenta area to Hugh and Neva Luce and was raised on the family ranch in Flournoy.

Upon graduation from high school, she began working for the United States Forest Service in Paskenta and with Crane Mills. She married Fred Humphrey on Dec. 6, 1947. They continued ranching in the Flournoy-Paskenta area.
Charlotte was always proud of the cattle produced on the ranch, especially when steers were entered at various fairs and jackpots. Many of which made the championship drive not only locally, but throughout the state.
Charlotte was quite active in the Flournoy 4-H Club and served as the community leader, and she enjoyed teaching cooking to children. Her grandchildren enjoyed helping Grandma make taffy, divinity and penuche. She was always delighted to furnish divinity for the fall auction to benefit the Paskenta Community Hall. She also enjoyed the time served as director and president of the Tehama County Farm Bureau.
As an avid rodeo fan, Charlotte, along with family and friends, has attended the National Finals Rodeo after it moved to Las Vegas, Nev. from Oklahoma City, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Humphrey and two sisters Ardell Pitkin and Barbara Humphrey.

She is survived by daughters Beverly (Jim) Ross of Red Bluff, Carmel (David) Spaulding of Terra Bella; sons Ronald Humphrey, Randy (Sharon) Humphrey of Flournoy; grandchildren Tara (Bryce) Carlson, Hillary Turner, Nicki Humphrey, Cheyenne Humphrey, Kristin McGarity, Daniel Humphrey, Bailey Spaulding, Tyler Spaulding, Kristin (Chuck) Morris, Aaron Ross (Courtney Tanner); five great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Arabelle Maitia and Nita Pitkin of Flournoy. She will be greatly missed by all.

A graveside service will be held on at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Paskenta Cemetery.

DEE HANSEN Arabelle "Dee" (Burress) Hansen passed away peacefully at her home in Orland, CA on July 20, 2018, following a brief battle with cancer.

Dee was born on June 23, 1939 in Willows, CA to Lester Luce and Velma (Luce) Holland. Dee was raised on a family ranch in Elk Creek with her brothers, Hugh (Patti) and Lonnie Luce (Carol). She attended high school in Willows with the class of 1957. In January of 1958 Dee married Jim Burress (of Willows, CA) at the age of 18. They had two children: a son, Hank, in 1958; and daughter, Karen, in 1959. During their 53 years of marriage, Dee and Jim lived mostly on Llano Seco Rancho where Dee enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, playing Bridge and spending time with family and lifelong best friends.

Dee married Dick Hansen (of Elk Creek) in a lovely outdoor ceremony in June of 2016. Dee is survived by her husband Dick, daughter Karen (Michael) Cosper, son-in-law Dan DuBose, sister Liz Henniger (Rudy); 3 grandchildren: Danielle Ford (Grant), Hank DuBose (Kayla), and JonMichael Cosper; 4 great grandsons: Kash (10), Conley (9), Kasen (6), and Aarow (1week), and sister-in-law, Shirley (Burress) Eggert (Bill) and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Velma and Lester Luce, husband Jim Burress, son Hank Burress, and her brothers, Hugh and Lonnie Luce.

The family would like to invite you to celebrate her life at 1:00 p.m. on, August 8, 2018, at Open Gate Christian Fellowship (950 W. Laurel St., Willows, CA)(potluck immediately following the celebration of life). Lester Lonzo "Lon" Luce, age 74 of Castalian Springs, passed away Saturday August 6, 2016. Funeral and Masonic Service will be Tuesday August 9th at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home, with Rev. Bob Snell and Rev. James Johnson officiating. Mr. Luce was born November 14, 1941 in Willows, California. He is preceded in death by his father, Lester D. Luce; brother, Hugh Luce; and many favorite aunts and uncles. He is survived by wife of 24 years, Carol Luce of Castalian Springs; daughter, Natalie Olson of Dallas, TX; step-children, Tina Harris (Brandon) of Woodburn, KY, James "Pete" Peterson (Lucinda) of Gallatin, TN, Lisa Cox (Ernie) of Chico, CA, and Rod Stevens (Theresa) of Chico, CA; mother, Velma Langford Holland of Orland, CA; sisters, Dee Burress Hansen of Orland, CA, Liz Hemminger of Lake Isabella, CA; step-brother, David Holland of Vader, WA; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren who he loved. He leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews, and devoted friends. He is also survived by his former wife, Sue Olson of Chico, CA. His best friend and constant companion, Cricket, will miss him greatly. Mr. Luce lived in Elk Creek, CA during his youth and attended schools in Willows and Elk Creek. He graduated Elk Creek High School in 1960; served in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Hull DD945 (1960-1964); made 3 West Pac cruises during that time. In 1965 he attended meat cutter's school in Toledo, OH. He worked as a meat cutter at several stores in Chico, CA, including Purity, Miller's Market, Shop and Save, and Safeway where he retired in 1998. In 2002 he moved to Tennessee. Lester was a prolific leather carver. He won numerous awards in international leather show competitions. In December 2012, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and given a year to live. He fought a long and courageous battle, overcoming many obstacles, including a stroke. He and Carol were able to make several memorable trips to California to visit family over the next four years, including a 6000 mile road trip in 2014.
