    John Adams moved with his father from Simsbury, Conn., before 1790 to Duanesburg, Schenectady (then Albany) Co., and about 1795 to Onondaga Co. N.Y., settling in that part of the Town of Marcellus which became the Town of Skaneateles on 26 Feb. 1830. He was considered one of the first settlers and a very prominent citizen. The records of of the Post Office Department in the National Archives in Washington "show that a post office was established at Rhodes, Onondaga County, New York, on February 28, 1828, with John Adams appointed as its only postmaster. It was discontinued on August 15, 1843." John Adams served in the War of 1812 enlisting at Skaneateles on 8 Aug. 1814, for the term of three months as a private in the company commanded by Capt. Moody R. Freeman in the 102nd Regiment of New York Militia commanded by Col. Hugh W. Dobbins. John Adams served his community as a justice of the peace and hence was entitled to be called 'Squire.".

    Died:
    Served one year in the War of 1812 as a surgeon's mate. Dr. Adams was admitted to membership in the Onondaga County Medical Society on 5 Jan. 1808. In 1816 he was a member of the New York State Assembly from Onondaga County and from 1818 to 1823 served as Onondaga County Clerk. He was appointed one of the superintendents of the Onondaga County Poor House 9 Feb. 1827, and before 1829 served as school commissioner in the Town of Camillus.
