Scotland of the Time?/b?
Allan Gilmour was born during a time of turmoil in Scotland. The economy of Scotland had collapsed during the 1690s and the country had experienced a series of crop failures. People were dying of starvation. The Bank of Scotland was established, as part of the effort to stabilize the economy. A series of investments were identified by the investors, and it is estimated that a quarter of all Scottish wealth was lost as a result of the failed Darien project.

In 1703, the Scottish parliament past the 'Act of Security' challenging the traditional relationship with the English monarchy and demanding that Scotland be granted free trade with England and the colonies. When the demand was initially refused, Scotland threaten to stop raising taxes for the English government and to withdraw troops from France. This threat was effective. The Act receives Royal Assent in 1704. In 1705 the English parliament retaliated and introduced the Alien Act which was designed to protect English interests in Scotland. Under this Act the English parliament demanded that the Scots negotiate a full union with England. If an agreement was not reached, Scottish assets would be seized, and an embargo placed on Scottish exports flowing into England. In 1707 the Scottish parliament was dissolved, not to reconvene for 292 years.

Into this mix of events, James Stewart, the Pretender, appeared and the Jacobite conflict emerged. His followers launched a series of skirmishes in their attempt to place him, and later his successor, Bonnie Prince Charlie on the throne of Scotland. After several defeats of British government forces, including at the Battle of Prestonpans, the struggle culminated in defeat for the Jacobite cause in the Battle of Culloden near Inverness in 1746. It is probable that both Allan Gilmour and his father James performed military duty during this time.

Birth records indicate that Allan Gilmour I was born in Renfrew Parish, Renfrewshire, Scotland to James Gilmor and Agnes Snodgrass. One sibling has been identified - John Gilmor (1708)
The poll books of 1695 indicate that in the country part of Renfrew parish there were 51 families. It is recorded that, "at that time, and long after it, a great part of the parish lay unimproved and unenclosed, merely in a state of nature".

Although after their lifetime, records of the parish in 1793 provide some insight into the communities of Allan and Jennet during their lifetime.

Allan Gilmour was born in Renfrew Parish, Renfrewshire. In the records, Renfrew parish is described as varying from three to four miles in length and breadth but having borders that were very irregular as a result of intersection with rivers and the Abbey parish of Paisley. The shire is split into two parts by the river Clyde, originally crossed by rowboat.

The town of Renfrew a royal burgh of Scotland, was passed into the hands of the Stewarts by a series of charters that confirmed its designated status through the centuries. Renfrew, located in Renfrew Parish, is three miles north of Paisley and five miles west of Glasgow. By 1793 the town is described as "half a mile in length, but in some places so narrow, that it is with great difficulty two carriages can pass each other. There are some small streets and lanes in it, besides the principal street". By 1793 there are some small manufactures emerging but at the beginning of the century it would be an agrarian community with possibly a cluster of trades people in the village.

Soil in the shire is described as sandy but productive alluvial deposit. The land tended to be low and prone to dampness and fog. During the early part of the 18?sup?th?/sup? century the Clyde river changed its course leaving the town, through which it formerly flowed, half a mile from the new waterway near the boundary between the counties of Lanark and Renfrew. Prior to this, "vessels of considerable burden were built close to the town", afterwards the town required canals to access navigable water.

By 1793 there are ten 'heritors' in the parish, and a great number of 'portioners', possessing what was called Burgher lands, holdings of the town. Three of the greater proprietors, either occasionally, or constantly reside in the parish. Unfortunately, they are not named. Some indication as to whom they might be may be deduced from landowners noted in 1845. "The principal heritors in the parish are the Incorporation of the burgh; Alexander Speirs, Esq. of Eldersly; Lord Douglas; W.M. Alexander, Esq. and others, proprietors of Walkingshaw; Miss Oswald of Scotstown; James Smith, Esq. of Jordanhill and Archibald Campbell, Esq. of Blythswood. It is interesting to note that some of these same people appear in a list of landowners in Stewarton Parish where Janet Stewart was born.

Allan Gilmour and Janet Stewart married in 1738 and appeared to have lived in Stewarton Parish for a time, and possibly for all their lives. No death records have yet been found. Allan was 32 and Janet 36 when they married, and it is not known if other children were born to them. Records have been found for three children Giles Gilmour (1739), Allan Gilmour II (1744-1793), and Margaret Gilmour (1748).

The first coal mines are said to have been opened in Craigton and neighbouring Drumoyne in the 16th century, and ironstone was being mined there by the early 19th century. The Glasgow merchant John Ritchie (d 1755) bought the Craigton estate in 1746. It passed on his death to his son James (1722-1799), a leading tobacco merchant and a founding partner of the Thistle Bank in 1761. James' son Henry (d 1843), also a partner in Thistle Bank, sold the estate in 1830 to Henry Dunlop (1799-1867) of James Dunlop & Sons, cotton spinners and manufacturers. Dunlop was Lord Provost of Glasgow 1837-1840 and Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in 1841, 1850 and 1862. He sold Craigton to Graham Hutchison, merchant in Glasgow, several years before his death.

Craigton Cemetery was opened by the Burgh of Govan in 1873. The Craigton housing estate was built 1921-1923.

?/b?No inscription is apparent on these monuments which are grouped together on the north wall of the Kirkyard. These imposing memorials at first provided a dilemma to the recorders. Had the inscriptions eroded or had they ever been inscribed?
The answer is to be found in A History of our Firm, a book by John Rankin, a descendant of the Rankins of Mainshouse (cf. monument K01).
Referring to the partners of Pollok, Gilmour & Co., John and Arthur Pollok and?b? Allan Gilmour?/b?, the author writes '?there is further proof both of their friendship and of their kindly memory of the country parish (Mearns) from which they sprang. They seem to have arranged for and prepared their burial places, corresponding in size and position on either side of the Mearns church burial-ground. They appear also to have erected their monuments beforehand, differing in form, ample in size, and of the period sufficiently stately. Allan Gilmour senior's heir, however, seemingly forgot to make any record of his birth, death or virtues, although three ample tablets were provided for the purpose; they stand today entirely free of the mason's art.'
?b?Allan Gilmour?/b?, the son of Allan Gilmour and Elizabeth Pollok of South Walton Farm, was born in 1775. With John and Arthur Pollok he founded the firm of Pollok, Gilmour & Co. in 1806 and built a very successful business trading in timber with Scandinavia and Russia and later with Eastern Canada. By the 1830s the firm had built and owned the largest fleet of wooden hulled ships in the world (about 120). Many of the ships had names with local association such as Mearns, Broom, Craigton, Fingalton and Fa'side.
?b?Allan Gilmour?/b? owned Fingalton, Kirkhouse and several farms in addition to the estate of Eaglesham which he purchased with his brother James at a cost of ?200,000 from the Eglinton family. He retired from business in 1838 and died in 1849 at Hazelden House.
Referred to above, monument Z02 commemorating John and Arthur Pollok is situated on the opposite side of the Kirkyard within sight of this memorial.

Born in 1782, James Gilmour was the brother of Allan Gilmour, Sr, and the son of Allan Gilmour and Elizabeth Pollok. He was sent in 1812 (together with Alexander Rankin) to establish a base on the Miramichi River (New Brunswick, Canada) for the family's Glasgow-based firm, Pollok, Gilmour and Company. Together, James Gilmour and Alexander Rankin, founded the small community of Gretna Green (later Douglastown, New Brunswick), and established a new branch for the firm, Gilmour, Rankin & Co.

Gilmour and Rankin first developed a sawmill, offices and a house at Douglastown, New Brunswick, and later established a shipbuilding yard and a second sawmill. They were one of the largest and most influential employers in the region, highly successful as timber merchants and ship builders.

James Gilmour returned to Scotland in 1840, and died at Eaglesham, Renfrewshire in 1858.[1]

A?b?lexander Rankin?/b? (December 31, 1788 ? April 3, 1852) was a Scottish-born merchant and political figure in New Brunswick. He represented Northumberland County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1827 to 1852.

He was born and educated in Mearns parish, the brother of Robert Rankin, and son of James Rankin and Helen Ferguson. His uncles, John Pollok and Arthur Pollok, were cofounders of Pollok, Gilmour and Company.

At the age of 18, he was hired as a clerk by Pollok, Gilmour and Company, a Glasgow firm that dealt in timber, and was sent with James Gilmour to New Brunswick to establish a branch of the firm (Gilmour, Rankin and Company) on the Miramichi River. They established a small community called Gretna Green (later Douglastown) as well as stores, wharves and a sawmill. Besides exporting timber, they also sold goods supplied from Scotland. In 1825, the operation suffered extensive damage in the Miramichi Fire. However, they were able to rebuild quickly with the help of the parent company. Rankin also became involved in timber operations at Bathurst (Ferguson, Rankin and Company), Dalhousie and Campbellton (Arthur Ritchie and Company).

In politics as well as in his timber operations, Rankin frequently found himself competing with Joseph Cunard. In elections in 1837 and 1843, Rankin supported John Ambrose Street against candidates supported by Cunard. Gilmour retired from the business in 1842, selling his interest to Rankin. Rankin was named to the province's Executive Council in 1847. With Cunard, he was a commissioner for lights in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and served on the board of health for the region. For many years, he also served as justice of the peace.

Rankin died unexpectedly in Liverpool during a visit to England at the age of 63.

Little is known about Robert Miller other than he was born to William Miller and Elizabeth Gilmour in 1784.

Unless he accompanied his parents, as part of the group of seven who arrived in 1821, Robert did not independently qualify for assistance through one of the emigration societies. He would have been of an age to qualify for his own grant unless the plan was for him to assist William and Elizabeth who were in or approaching their sixties. If he was unmarried, this may have been the plan.

He does not appear in the 1820, 1822, 1834 or 1842 reports on the settlers in the Bathurst District. In the ?i?MS 482 Vol 1 Inspection Report Bathurst District Clergy Reserves 1828, ?/i? the report for Robert Miller, Dalhousie C1 L17, 200 acres, describes the soil as bad. Timbers - maple, hemlock, elm and basswood on the ridge, cedar and tamarack in swamp. Will purchase at 21? per acre. Nearest mill is eight miles. Is this 'Robert'? The location close to his parents suggests it might be.

He reappears, to obtain the crown patent on his parents property in Lanark Township 6 Mar 1851 and it is believed to be Robert, at the home of his brother Andrew Miller in Bathurst at the time of the 1852 census, identified as a widower, but he does not appear in the 1861 census. No burial site has been located.

The possibility of Robert being a military settler needs to be explored more fully. There is a possibility that he served in Ireland and or on the Continent. He may have followed the family to Canada after receiving a pension.


The possibility of Robert remaining in Scotland and possibly marrying there has been looked at, and a possible marriage to Agnes Kerr and resulting family identified, but more work will be required to prove or disprove this theory.

The possibility that Robert emigrated to another country is another possibility that has not yet been explored. South Africa, New Zealand and Australia would be good possibilities in addition to the United States.

Robert Miller of the Township of Lanark, in the County of Lanark and Province of Canada, Yeoman, maketh oath and saith that Williiam Miller formerly of the Town of Dumbarton, in the Parish of Cardross, in the shire of Dunbarton in that part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, called Scotland, Farmer, the father of this deponent, emigrated from lthe said town of Dumbarton in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty one, and came to Canada in the ship "George Cannon" in the same yeaar, and was immediately after his arrival located by the Military Settling Department upon or for the west half of Lot Number fifteen in the first concession of the said township of Lanark as one of the body of people who emigrated from Scotland during the same year and were called "The Lanark Settlers". This deponent further saith that upon his coming to Canada in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine he learned from his Brother Andrew and the remaining members of his father's family that his said father and his family resided upon the said land from the time of his location until some time in the year 1824 when his said father died and the widow (the stepmother of this deponent) and the rest of the family continued to reside thereon for upwards of twelve years after his deatah, bu which time a clearance of about fourty acres had been made and a dwelling house and barn built theron. This Deponent further saith that he is the eldest Son and Heir at Law of the said William Miller , that upon his, this deponent's coming to Canada, his claim to

A kerfuffle over his estate. ?b?Mary Miller?/b?, his wife, refused administration on his estate. ?b?Jane Ebbot?/b? petitioned for re-payment of loans totaling over $1000 - in 1885 - dating back to 1855. The notes were in her name then: ?b?Jane M. Wilson?/b?. She says that she is the sister of William's wife, Mary Miller. A great grandson petitioned in 1948 because his grandfather had been named in the will "Miller W. Moore" and his name was really "William M. Moore" There is diagram of the homestead there too.

I do not have the diagram. I think Robert Urquhart's 4 great grand daughter may as a guess.

Then, Mary Miller Moore died in 1898 and her parents were named as ?b?William Miller and Margaret Burns?/b?.

So, now we know that William Miller 1786 went to the United States in 1836, was in Racine in 1844, that he had, at least, children?b? Margaret Mary, Jane, and John ?/b?with him. Jane married one husband Joseph Wilson along the way, and Mary married William V. Moore either Dec. 25 1844 or Jan. 31st 1845 - both records exist. Unfortunately, nothing further about the whereabouts of William and Margaret after the 1850 census of Wisconsin. William Miller 1786 & Mary Margaret Burns your 4 great grandparents either died before 1860 or moved on.

Wm. Miller & Mary or Margaret Burns were married at Kilmarnock Scotland on 13 June 1807.
The baptismal records of their children in Scotland use one of those two christian names but never the two at one time. We have not checked her birth records to verify which is correct or whether it should be Mary Margaret Burns. It is rumoured that she is a sister of Robbie Burns the poet but never verified.
In 1821, William Miller took his family to Greenock where they embarked for Canada settling in Lanark twp on Con 1 Lot 15 opposite his brother Andrew who had drawn a similar lot in Dalhousie twp.
Burial records have never been located but the 1834 report on the condition of the 1820-21 Scottish settlers to Lanark and Dalhousie twps states that widow Miller is alone on L15 C1 Lanark and that the rest of the family has moved to Bathurst twp. In his diaries Robert Mason recorded that Mrs. William Miller died 13 Dec 1839. As three of his daughters were married to Miller husbands we have assumed that this was Mary Margaret Burns.
To make a positive identification more difficult there were no less than four William Millers in Dalhousie and Lanark twps in 1834. A William Miller left L14 C2 Dalhousie in 1839 and moved to Hammond, St. Lawrence Co., New York State. Efforts to identify this man have failed to date.
Janet, Margaret Ann & Mary, daughters of William and Mary Margaret Miller have not been identified in our research although earlier family history had indicated possible marriages to a Brownlee and a Robinson.

pg. 105 reflects the confusion of William Millers at the time. She has Andrew Miller as a son rather than a brother. Again on pg 106 there is confusion of generations.
One of the William Millers was a member of the ?b?Glasgow Canadian Society. ?/b?Signatures of James, Andrew and William are posted on page 103. Walter Black was head of this emigration society. This group arrived in 1821 on the ship George Canning.?b?

James Gilmour (6 persons), William Miller (1 person) and William Gilmour (1 person) sailed on Earl of Buckinghamshire, Johnston Master, departing Greenock on 29 Apr 1821 to sail to Quebec.
Among the 1821 arrivals is Robert Mason on Lanark C2 Lot 9W, Alexander Brownlee on Dalhousie C12 L11W, and John Miller on Lanark C2 L22W.?b?
?/b?on the same ship, Cannnington as part of the ?i?Cambuslang Society?/i?, there was a John Miller (4 people) and a William Gourley (5 people).

I find that one of the William Millers from Scotland, was a bachelor, and had arrived on the Commerce on June 1820 and was not located until 22 March 1821 on Lanark C7 L12W. Furthermore I discover that he was not sent out by Government but was received by authority of Commander, 22 January, 1821. A Hugh Miller, 1821 settled in Ramsay Township C10 L18 on 25 Jul 1821. He was of interest, not as a Miller but as an ancestor of Beatrice Miller Duncan who married into my husband's Duncan family.

Another document was In this report we find that William Miller, 1820,?b? ?/b?purchased?b? ?/b?Lanark C2 Lot 13W from Wm. Brown who now owns a tavern in Perth and that William Miller is located on Dalhousie C2 Lot 14E. It seems there is a 'Brown' connection yet to be discovered in the family. A grandson of William and Elizabeth has ?i?Brown?/i? as a second name on a marriage record. It is also noted that John Blair sold Dalhousie C5 L6W to William Miller. At this point I go back to the record of births and baptism I have already gathered. I know that William Miller and Elizabeth Gilmour, are the parents of Robert, b. 3 Nov 1784, William, b. 19 Sep 1786, John, born 7 Jun 1789, and Jean b. 3 Aug 1791, all in Dumbarton, Dumbartonshire, Scotland.

Charles Rankin listed him as indebted to the British government in October 1829.
In 1834, John Miller is identified as the settler associated with this lot which is described as stony and swampy. It is noted that he has two sons in western Ontario.
In 1838 John Miller states that he was located many years ago on this lot and it was barren and request permission to relinquish and select 100 acres of land elsewhere.
John Miller does not appear on this land in 1842, nor could he be found on land in the townships in the study area (Lanark, Dalhousie, Bathurst, Burgess).
John Miller did not receive the patent to this land.

In the same document as noted for Dalhousie C2 L21*, John Miller is located on C2 L22, 100 acres on 24 July 1821. A second John Miller is noted as settling on C3 L21E on 25 July 1821.
In some documents, the settlement of Dalhousie C2 L22 has been associated with John Miller, North Albion Society, arrived on the ship Commerce in 1821. He was accompanied by a wife and six children, 2 males over twelve years, one female over twelve years, one male under twelve years, two females under twelve years. However, it is more likely those who associated John Miller with wife and six children locate on Lanark Concession 2 Lot 22 are correct. William Graham, head of this group did not sail, and John Miller led this group which included three families. Two other members of group, Peter Baxter, located on Lanark C3 Lot 13, and John Parker located on Lanark C4 L4.
C. Bennett also makes note that 'J. Miller has two sons in Western Ontario' which also appears in the notes about Lanark C2 L22 above which suggests confusion as to the township associated with this land allocation.

John Miller arrived in 1821, a member of the Cambuslang Society, on the George Canning with three children, 2 sons under twelve, 1 daughter under twelve. (other Miller family members on this ship but in the Glasgow Canadian Society). The ship sailed on 14 Apr 1821 and arrived at Quebec on 2 Jun 1821. The settlers proceeded to Montreal aboard the Lady Sherbrooke.
John Miller settled on lot C3L21E, 100 acres, on 25 July 1821, the same day as his father and brothers. He can be matched to settler #495 in the Location Report of Settlers. These records indicate it was Concession 3 Lot 21 E not concession 2.

Plympton
Plympton is the most northern of the center tier of Lambton County townships and is bounded on the north by a portion of Bosanquet and on the north west by Lake Huron.

It is the second largest township in the county, having 76080 acres. The settlement of Plympton dates back from 1833 in which year a large number of immigrants located along the Egremont Road in the 5th and 6th ,Concessions. They came out from Europe under the patronage of Lord Egremont. There was also a settlement at Camlachie the same year. The land there was settled in 1833 by old country men and?b? in 1835 and 36 a considerable number of Scotch settlers came to the southern part of the township from Lanark county. ?/b?When the settlement was effected along the lake there was no way of communicating with Sarnia, then a straggling hamlet containing only one store, except by boats on the lake.

In 1835, 27 year old Malcolm Cameron persuded Scottish settlers to follow him from Lanark and Perth, (Lanark Cty) when he bought the property that was to become downtown Sarnia. He provided land for their Presbyterian Church, employed them in his grist mill, took potash in exchange for goods at his store corner of Lochiel and Front St. The settlers cut square oak timbers he sold to Glasgow shipyards, manufactured staves he shipped to Jamaica for rum barrels, built and sailed vessels on the lakes. Through use of political influence he was responsible for the building of a road from London to Sarnia direct.

The 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards was a British army cavalry regiment, officially formed in January 1686 as Shrewsbury's Regiment of Horse. Following a number of name changes, it became the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1804.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the unit was commanded by William Cadogan, close aide to the Duke of Marlborough. It was engaged in many of Marlborough's battles and sieges, including Blenheim, Ramillies and Malplaquet; after the Peace of Utrecht in 1713, it resumed garrison duties in Ireland, where it spent most of the next 80 years.[7]

Renamed Second Irish Horse in 1746, it then became 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1788.[2] On the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Warsin 1793, it was posted to Flanders where it fought at the April 1794 Battle of Beaumont.[6] The unit returned to Ireland and helped suppress the 1798 Irish Rebellion, including the battles of Arklow, Vinegar Hill and Ballinamuck.[5] In 1804, it was retitled 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Regiment of Dragoon Guards after Princess Charlotte, later simplified to 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards.[2]

Posted to Spain in 1810, it was part of Le Marchant's brigade during the Peninsular campaign. The Battle of Salamanca in July 1812 is considered one of Wellington's greatest victories and Le Marchant's attack as the 'single most destructive charge made by a brigade of cavalry in the whole Napoleonic period.

Dalhousie C1 Lot 15E Original grant to Andrew Miller now occupied by Stephen Cook. Property has a small clearing and is rocky. Paid 8 17 9. Andrew Miller in Bathurst.

He moved to C2 Lot 9 Bathurst in the early 1830's settling along the south side of the 3rd Concession. He later added lots 7 and 8 to his land parcel.

Lot 10. Marriage records have not been located but it is believed that they may have been married by Dr. Gemmill, the first minister to serve the Dalhousie settlers on a regular basis. His records have never been located. In 1835, the Munro family moved to the 3rd Concession of Bathurst, close to where the Miller family had settled.
Andrew and Catherine had eleven children.

Andrew Miller, the youngest son of William Miller and Elizabeth Gilmour, was 22 years of age, when he came to Canada with his brother. He settled on Dalhousie Con 1 Lot 15, 15 Jul 1821.
In 1825, Andrew Miller, a farmer, from Bathurst Con 3, married Catherine Munro of Dalhousie. She was the oldest daughter of Peter Munro and Mary McNab who came to Canada in 1820 and settled on Dalhousie Con 1

Catherine Munro, Andrew's wife died 12 August 1858 and the 1861 census tells us that Andrew continues to live in the log house with six of his children. Peter has married Margaret Mason and is living nearby with daughter Ellen. Andrew, is unmarried but also living nearby.

It appears that no stone was erected for Andrew but the inscription for Cathrine and John their son clearly indicates the relationship.

Janet Miller would have been 19 years of age when her parents, William Miller and Elizabeth Gilmour, left Dumbarton and sailed from Greenock for their new home in Lanark County.

Robert and Janet lived on Lanark Con 2 L 6. The 1851 census has the following information.

Ted Miller: Birth info from OPR Births 496/00 0030 0242 Dumbarton Register - Birth Date 24 August 1806.

Based on correspondence from Muriel Peppler, I believe that?b? John Miller 1806 came to Canada in 1826?/b? (unexplained date in a Robert Miller bible in the possession of Carolee, daughter of Clinton Park, granddaughter of Elizabeth Miller Park 2017).

Family lore suggests that he worked on a ships crew and left the ship in Quebec and made his way to Lanark County. He would have been 20 years of age at the time and would have qualified for a free grant of land when he reached age 21 but the land granting program was cancelled in 1827. He therefore did not receive a land grant.

It is not know at this time where he worked and lived until his ?b?marriage to Margaret Blair in Lanark, Rev. John Gemmill, in 1831?/b? (Marriage certificate believed to have been held by Melville Millar in the 1990s). It is suspected that he may have worked for James Blair for a time and thus met his daughter Margaret. James Blair settled in Dalhousie in 1820. He died before 1834 and his son George acquired the property Dalhousie Concession 1 Lot 8 and applied for the crown patent for this lot.

Stewart Miller, son of John and Margaret, retured to this farm in the 1870's with his first wife, Jane Elliott, age 40 who died in 1883 and a son John, age 12 who died in 1881. Jane and her son are buried in the same plot as George Blair in the Watson Corners cemetery.

It is believed that two children were born before moving to Bathurst. One unsubstatiated suggestion is that William was born in Huntley Township, Carleton County. If this can be established it might suggest that John was engaged in the timber industry for a period. This was one of the common methods for gaining currency during this period.

(Research):One of the census (1861) shows an Isabella Miller that no one can identify. Isabella is said to have married William Milne and is buried in Burnbrae cemetery, adjoining St Andrew's Church. The inscription on their tombstone is hard to read (1981:M. Peppler) but seems to be: Isabella Miller, died 22 Feb 1883, aged 60?, 63?, 69?. A granddaughter has her birth as 27 May 1820. This would make it unlikely that she was John and Margaret's daughter, maybe a sister?

The Millers and Blairs first settled in Dalhousie. Grandfather moved to Rawdon, near Campbellford; both he and grandmother Miller are buried there. Father, Mother, Uncle Robert and Aunt Agnes are buried in Rainy River.

The 1871 Census of Canada lists John Miller, age 64, as dying in April within the 12 months "preceeding the 1871 Census".

2. The Ontario Land Registry Access Land Registry Office for Hastings County (LRO21) advises -
Page 267 of 301 of this document recorded that William, James, David, Stewart, George, John and wives & Margaret Miller ? Widow" Granted 100 acres of the property of Concession 9, Lot 21, to "Robert Miller", by Grant G818 on 12 January, 1871.

He was a founding director of the City Bank (of Montreal), which had been established in 1831 to break the monopoly of the Bank of Montreal and increase the availability of credit. Richie's ability to negotiate financial arrangements on behalf of the company was no doubt aided by his involvement

Land & Property:
Ritchie returned to Scotland with his wife and children in 1841 and purchased the estate of Middleton, near Gorebridge. As in Lower Canada, he remained essentially a private person, playing little or no part in public life. He devoted his energies to agriculture and arboriculture, purchasing additional land at Lambhill (near Strathaven) and leasing from Allan Gilmour Sr the farm of West Walton in Eaglesham. When he died in 1856 he left a movable estate of ?13,919, with the majority of his heritable property in entail to his eldest son, William. His comparatively short business career relied for its success, and ultimately its failure, on the influence and genius of Allan Gilmour Sr. Ritchie's major contribution to Pollok, Gilmour in British North America was the personal influence and skill he exerted in establishing the credit facilities which enabled the various companies to flourish. This contribution connected him with important developments in finance and credit introduced with the growth of commercial banking in British North America.
