    Occupation:
    Samuel G Gibson MD
was the son of a Scottish sea captain who retired to Goderich, Ontario (a port on Lake Huron, about 80 miles NE of Sarnia). Perhaps because he had been sailing with his father, Samuel at age 21, could neither read nor write. He went to night school and continued his studies until becoming a school teacher. He taught for several years (possibly in Manitoba or North Dakota) then decided to study medicine. He was nearly 50 years old when he graduated and established a practice in Langdon, North Dakota.
At age 52 he married 29 year old "Nellie" Gibson at the Gibson home on the Scotch Line, Perth Ontario. Nellie was the high school principal at Pilot Mound, Manitoba, only 35 miles NW of Langdon. They probably met through over-lapping social/professional circles of these (cross boarder) neighboring towns. Tragically, Samuel lost his bride just two years after their wedding. She apparently died giving birth to their first-born, Andrew Bertram. It would have been rough raising a newborn at age 54. Whether or not he remarried is unknown.
