    Died:
    Death of Mr. John McLaren.
Mr. John McLaren of 'The Hill' farm passed peacefully away this morning at one o'clock. He had been ill since New Years, and confinement in the house during the long winter months quickened the breaking up of a constitution that had always been accustomed to plenty of exercise in the open air. It was thought, however, that when spring returned and venture could be made outdoors that vitality and strength would return. But the fondest hopes proved illusive, and the end came, to the deep regret of all Lanark, where Mr. McLaren enjoyed the highest respect and esteem. Senator Peter and Mrs. McLaren, James L.P. and Mrs. McLaren, drove out Monday and visited the sick bed. The funeral will take place from his late residence on Thursday, July 2nd, at 1:30 o'clock p.m., to Lanark Village Cemetery. John McLaren was born in 1828 and at his death was in his 81st year. He first saw the light of day on the farm where he drew his latest breath. This homestead is known as "The Hill," and has a commanding view of Lanark Village and the surrounding country. It was there his parents settled after the memorable emigration in 1820. The boys grew into manhood and Peter became the lumber king of the Mississippi. The calling of the woods also attracted John, and with his brother he lumbered on the Mississippi River for about forty years. He became well known in the district through which the Snow Road extends, and at McLaren's Depot, which was the distributing point of shanty supplies for years. In the old days it was timber, then followed the sawlog era, through both of which Mr. McLaren labored with the same geniality that characterized all his life. The decline of lumbering also marked the twilight of John's career. He returned to the old homestead on The Hill, where he lived and enjoyed his remaining years with his wife and family. Forty eight years ago Agnes May became his wife. Eight boys were born to them, seven of whom are still living, one boy (John) died some years ago. Two of the boys, Peter and Allan, are at home; Daniel is in Spokane, Wash.; James in Wardner, B.C.; Fred and Findlay at Blairmore, Alta.; William at Marcellus, N.Y. Besides the Senator a brother, William lives at Lewiston, Idaho. Mr. McLaren loved his home and the locality. Every evening after the day's toil was over he would walk into the village, where his cheery word and bright smile were welcome. He was the soul of honor, did wrong to no person, and altogether lived a live that was exemplary. We shall miss him, gentleman of the old school that he was.

Once a timber site was close to being 'logged out', timber cruisers surveyed un harvested territory to select new job sites. The value of timber, access to streams and rivers and the logistics of purchasing and delivering supplies and other factors could make the difference between profit and loss.

"Gillies, in the informal way of the day, told him they would work henceforth as partners, and such was the basis of an agreement on which the Gillies and McLaren Company was founded, and on which a generation later, the adjustment o hundreds of thousands of dollars turned."
A Hundred Years A-Fellin', 1842-1942, edited by Charlotte Whitton (1942).
Peter McLaren was 22 years of age.

    Occupation:
"For 20 years, from the time he first went into the bush in the winter of 1844, Peter McLaren had no permanent residence. Initially he passed his winters in the lumber shanties along the Clyde and Mississippi, and the summer seasons back on the family farm in Lanark township. As he became more deeply involved in the Gillies Lumber Company business, cruising new limits, and then as a partner from 1853, he seemed to have lived periodically at Carleton Place, Lanark, Snow Road, and at the shanties he supervised. In the census of 1851 he was living with his widowed mother and siblings in Lanark township. The census taker af 1861 failed to find him, probably deep in the bush somewhere in the Mississippi River basin."
    ?i?Mississippi Lumber Baron, Ron Shaw, 2016 ?/i?

    Land & Property:
At the same time, the Boyd Caldwell company built the second large sawmill in Carleton Place. By 1875 his steam powered mill, managed by son William, employed 75 men working 10 hours per day, six days a week.

    Residence:
    Drummond Twp, Concession 2 Lots 3 & 4.
In the 1870s, McLaren made two additions to the house, more than doubling its original size to 7,700 square feet. Main house is stone, additions are of yellow brick, with a turret and copper tile roof. He hired the firm of Jones and Fuller who between 1850 and 1866 had built the centre block of the Canadian Parliament buildings and St. James Anglican Church in Perth.
    ?i?Ron Shaw?/i?

    Legal:
Until this time lumbermen operating on the upper Mississippi River conceded, without complaint, to Gillies-McLaren, and later to McLaren, the right to control their improvements on the river. Competing companies paid tolls to pass their logs through the slides and channels, or held back their drives until McLaren opened his dams and booms.
In 1875, The Buck and Stewart Company forced its spring drive down river, cutting through the McLaren boom at Ragged Chute in Palmerston Township (Frontenac County) and opened a 20 foot gap in the McLaren dam at High Falls in North Sherbrooke township, Lanark County. McLaren sued for damages but legal action was terminated when company owner Buck was committed to the Ontario Insane Asylum.
    ?i?Ron Shaw?/i?

    Legal:
In 1878 the Caldwell Lumber Company bought timber limits on the upper Mississippi. The following spring, taking a page from the unfortunate Buck, Caldwell cut McLaren dams and booms and drove his logs, from a timber limit adjacent to Buckshot Creek below Buckshot Lake, through to Carleton Place.

    Legal:
When Boyd Caldwell tried to force another drive through the McLaren works in the spring of 1880, Peter McLaren sought an injunction against Boyd Caldwell." The judicial decisions 'ping ponged' between for and against Caldwell/McLaren. Caldwell moved on to the political front. Caldwell was successful in obtaining rapid legislative action via his hephew, William C. Caldwell, a member of Mowat's Liberal Pary representing South Lanark County. Although McLaren's father-in-law, William Lees, was also a member of the legislature, he was a member of the opposition Conservative Party.
McLaren protested the low toll rates proscribed by the bill and turned to the Federal government of Sir John A. Macdonald who promptly overturned the Ontario Provincial legislation. The two levels of government battled for control through 1882-1883.

In 1882, Caldwell's men cut through McLaren dams blocking a drive at the foot of Long Lake and brought 10,000 logs down river to Carleton Place in 1883.

McLaren took his case to the Supreme Court of Canada who, on 28 November 1882, ruled in his favour.

Caldwell took his case to the highest of all courts, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Britian which ruled in 1884 that all waterways were open to all, although private interests could charge a reasonable amount for the use of any improvements leading to the 'Rivers and Streams Act'.

    ?i?Ron Shaw?/i?

    Land & Property:
The timber limit encompassed Mill, Star, Allison and York creeks and a sawmill on York Creek. The mill had been established by the Canadian government in 1879 as a project to support a nearby First Nations reserve, but after two years the government declared the venture a failure and sold it to McLaren. Under the management of his brother-in-law William Robert Lees, the mill was quickly turned into a profitable operation and the centre of the new village of Mountain Mill.

    Land & Property:
The second Alberta mill was opened 40 miles to the east of Mountain Mill in time to profit from the 1897-98 construction of the Crowsnest Pass Railway. McLaren sold the CPR railway ties and his loggers hand hewed the numerous Douglas firs in advance of the track layers. The new rail line also served to open market access for the McLaren Lumber Company mills, allowing lumber to be shipped east.

    Land & Property:
Telephone stations were built along the six miles of flume to report log jams so that the water flow could be shut down. The Blairmore plant had an annual capacity of seven to eight million board feet. In the early 1880s coal had been discovered in the area and when commercial extraction began at Beaver Mines in the early 1900s, the mines provided a huge market for timber pit props and other constructions.

    Land & Property:
When his estate put the Virginia holdings on the market, the anticipated repatriation of sale proceeds boosted the value of the Canadian dollaar against the American currency by 12%.

?i?"A property of 100,000 acres of Virginia timber and ore lands was bequeathed to the widow, three daughters and two sons of the late Hon. Peter McLaren of Perth, a member of the Canadian Senate. Senator McLaren died in May 1919 and the estate was probated at $1,000,000.

Baltimore interests are now completing, or have completed, negotiations for the purchase of the McLaren property. The authority in the negotiations is the New York office of J. Pierpont Morgan. The price mentioned in the deal is between $25,000,000 and $30,000,000 cash."
    ?/i?
However, despite the hype, the Virginia iron mines had not been profitable. Six years later, the mines were still on the market when an Ontario judge noted that,

?i?"the estate of Peter McLaren was found to be in a very involved condition, his main estate consisting of a large tract of land in Virginia of very uncertain value and which has so faar proved to be unsaleable. The resources of the estate have been somewhat taxed to meet the outgoing obligations for taxes, etc. and the result has been that comparatively small sums have been paid to the beneficiaries. Owing to some dissention in the family as to the management of the estate, an administration decree has been pronounced..."?/i?

His trustees were dismissed and disputes over the estate's real value led to litigation for years. Shareholders sued and finally settled for about half the value of their claims. Nevis Cottage remained in McLaren hands for another 35 years. Widow Sophia Lees McLaren died there in 1923 and it was only when daughter Annie Kathleen died in 1954 that the household was broken up. The ?i?"prestigious auction house of Ward-Price of Toronto were brought in and the Senator's chattels fell under the hammer at enormous prices."?/i?

    Died:
On Friday, May 23, 1919 Peter McLaren, aged 87 years, died at his Nevis Cottage home in Perth.

"His early years were spent as a boy on the parental farm and later in the lumbering woods, where he became an expert in the occupation which was his special work and occupation in after years, and by which he acquired great wealth and influence.

After the sale of his limits and mills, Mr. McLaren retired from industrial life, and to bear with dignity the honors of new political life, he having been made a member of he Dominion Senate in the year 1890 by the Conservative Government of the day.

The hardships of his youger days in the lumbering and in the drivers' camps entailed intermittent attacks of rheumatism, and these lasted until the end of his life.

His funeral took place on Sunday, May 25th, to Elmwood Cemetery, the Rev. Notes:

Peter McLaren, Sr. entered the United States at Port Huron, Michigan in March of 1884. From there he proceeded to the Dakota Territories with his wife and three children. He was forty five years old and his wife Elizabeth was forty three. In the Dakotas he would establish the Vienna Homestead.

    ?b?The Vienna Homestead?/b?
The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed any person twenty one years of age and a citizen of the U.S., or who had filed a declaration of intention to become such, to file a claim on 160 acres of land in certain specified areas. By 1885 Peter had filed for a quarter section (160 acres) of land in the Dakota Territories, about a mile southwest of what would become the town of Vienna.

Peter was among the first settlers in this area and since he was accompanied by his wife and three children they obviously had the resources to survive until their land could be converted into a productive farm. Peter's younger brother, James, had inherited their father's farm in Lanark and may have provided financial support. We will never know. When the family arrived in the Dakota Territories, Peter Jr., the oldest boy, was eighteen years old. His brother, John Walker, was sixteen. Daughter Marion, the oldest child, was twenty. She did not marry until she was twenty four.

In 1887 fortune smiled, as the Duluth, Watertown and Pacific Railroad Company started to build a rail bed through the territory. The track would bisect their township from the southwest to the northeast, passing within a half mile of their farm. It was the railroad that created the town of Vienna, designated as one of its stops. In those days, the economic significance of having a rail station close to your farm can not be overstated.

In November 1889 the Dakota Territories became North and South Dakota and Peter Sr.'s family started to grow.

Once established and farming the land, Peter Sr.'s family began to experience the highs and lows typical of the times. The McLarens would spend more than three decades in and around Vienna. Here is a Family Timeline.
    ?b?
    A Family Timeline?/b?
1889 - Daughter Marion ("Minnie") marries the local blacksmith, thirty year old James Sproat Henery. She soon delivers the first of eight children, only five of whom survive - not unusual numbers in that period of time.

1896 - Peter Jr. marries Mary Celia ("Minnie") Dixon, daughter of one of the original settlers. He is thirty, she is twenty four. They will have five children.

1897 - John Walker, Peter Sr.'s youngest son, died suddenly, at age twenty nine. John was a medical student in Minneapolis and the family legend was "a wrestling accident."

1898 - Peter Sr. is elected chairman of the Township Officers. Vienna is part of Pleasant Township, the total population of which is less than 500.

1899 - Peter Jr. and Mary Celia obtain 160 acres of land adjacent to Peter Sr.'s original farm.

1900 - Federal Census shows Peter Sr. and Peter Jr. farming their respective lands.

1905 - South Dakota Census shows Peter Sr. on his original farm. Peter Jr. has moved his family (now with three daughters) to the Dixon lands, just east of Vienna. He is still listed as "farmer" and is probably living in the house where my father will be born. He is next door to his father-in-law, Robert Arthur Dixon, and two brothers-in-law.

1908 - Elizabeth (Walker) McLaren, Peter Sr.'s wife, dies.

1910 - Federal Census shows Peter Sr., now widowed, living in Vienna with his granddaughter Pearl Irene Henery and a great grandson. Peter Jr. is still on the Dixon land and is now a "rural mail" delivery man for the U.S. Postal Service.

1913 - Peter Sr. dies. He is buried next to his wife and son in the Dixon Cemetery, at the northeast corner of the Dixon lands.

    1917 - Peter Jr.'s father-in-law, Robert Arthur Dixon, dies.

    Died:
David McLaren, second son of "Big" Peter McLaren and Janet Stewart, was born April 10, 1844 in the family home at Pine Grove, Lanark Township, Ontario, Canada. Still living with his parents, David married his second cousin Margaret McLaren (daughter of "Little" Peter McLaren) on June 16, 1868. He had become a lumber man, working for his cousin Senator Peter McLaren in various capacities. Clearing trees was both profitable and necessary as the area around Lanark transitioned to farming, and when the timber industry began to slow he became a farmer himself. He moved to Drummond Township, where he and Margaret raised four boys and five girls. Margaret died in 1898, at age 50, of "consumption," which is now known as tuberculosis. The disease was extremely infectious and, in the age before antibiotics, greatly feared. The family tore down and then re-built their home to avoid contamination. David was highly regarded throughout the area and became known as "The Grand Old Man of Drummond."

David married Margaret McLaren on 16 Jun 1868. Margaret (daughter of Little Peter McLaren and Mary McDonald) was born on 15 Apr 1848 in Lanark Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 11 Oct 1898 in Lanark Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Lanark Village Cemetery, Lanark, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Another Pioneer of the Community Answers Summons - Funeral Services Held Sunday Afternoon

William McLaren, one of the pioneer residents of the McCanna community, passed away in the county hospital in this city last Thursday, following a lingering illness which had kept him bedridden for some time.

Born October 30th, 1858, in Perth, Ontario, Mr. McLaren came to the McCanna community 61 years ago when a young man, and engaged in farming operations for a great many years. About seven years ago, when his health started to fail he moved to Grand Forks and lived there until about two years ago when they moved to this city and have resided here since. He was 83 years of age at the time of his death.

Mr. McLaren took a great deal of interest in local and county politics, and was at one time a county commissioner and served on the township boards for several terms.

Surviving are the widow, three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Collins and Mrs. Cora Engh of Grand Forks, and Mrs. Floyd Warcup of this city, a niece, Mrs. George Alexander of Minneapolis, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Masonic funeral services were conducted from the Masonic Temple in this city on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, Dr. S.F. Halfyard officiating, and Rev. Nathan Daynard of the Presbyterian church preached the funeral sermon. Mrs. W. B. Bang sang "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mrs. Wm Klemer at the piano, and a quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stonehouse, Mrs. W. B. Bang and Amos D. J.P.L. McLaren Dies At His Home
Former Perth Man Only Ill For Short Time in Springfield.
    Special to The Journal.
PERTH, Ont. Sept. 15.-Deep regret was caused today to friends in Perth and district, by news of the sudden death of James L. P. McLaren, which occurred late yesterday in Springfield. Mass. Mr. McLaren was 56 years of age and a native of Perth, having been the son of the late Senator and Mrs. Peter McLaren. For the past few years he had resided in New Hampshire.
He is survived by his widow; one son, Peter Gay McLaren, of Oshawa; one daughter. Mrs. George Verral. of Toronto; and two sisters. Mrs. T. W. Hall, of Oshawa, and Miss Kathleen McLaren, of Perth.
The illness which resulted in Mr. McLaren's death was brief and the news of his death came as a great shock to his many friends here. He last visited Perth a few weeks ago to attend the wedding of his daughter. Members of his immediate family are bringing the body here where the funeral will be held from Nevis Cottage, Drummond street, home of the late Senator, on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock standard time.

    Notes:

William was the second son of Peter McLaren and Sophia Elizabeth Lees. He received his early education at Trinity College, Port Hope, Ontario. From there he traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland with his brother James to be educated at a boy's secondary school. Upon his return to Perth as a young man, William became the owner and operator of a mica mine located at the northwest end of Otty Lake, in Burgess township. This mine was widely known as simply "McLaren's Mine," and was the basis of operations for William and eventually, his wife Anna Gemmill. At the peak of operations at the mine, whose mica was used extensively for insulation of electrical motors, generators and home appliances, fifty men were employed, all of whom boarded and ate at the mine.
During a ten year period and due to his intense involvement with his mine, William took courses from the International Correspondence School of Mining and Engineering, with headquarters at Scranton, Pennsylvania. His studies further accentuated his fascination with historical artifacts, an attraction that had its beginning in his boyhood.
While he was a young boy, William spent his summers in and around the Perth area, including a cottage located on the Rideau Lakes. At this time (the late 19th century), there were many old Indian relics lying on the surface of the ground. Fascinated by these relics and artifacts, William began a journal (in the possession of the Perth Museum, along with the bulk of his collections) and recorded meticulously every artifact that he found. Many of them are accompanied by his own hand-drawn facsimiles of the artifacts. The journal represents an invaluable record of Indian artifacts that were found in the Perth area.
William's fascination with these artifacts, the material shards of a culture, did not end with his boyhood. His interest, if possible, grew as he aged, and he became involved in the study of the migratory patterns of different tribes, probably in order to determine more exactly the origins of his own artifacts, and to put his collection into some kind of overall perspective.
When William died in 1932, he left behind not only warm and cherished memories in those people who knew and loved him personally, but also a priceless collection of Indian artifacts, a physical reminder of the culture of a people who inhabited this country centuries before any organized settlement. His collection is a very representative and superlative one, surely a reflection of the man himself.

    Notes:

In 1884 Peter emigrated from Canada with his parents to homestead in the Dakota Territory near what later became Vienna, South Dakota. He farmed with his father and later with his wife Mary Celia (Dixon) McLaren. Peter and Mary Celia married in 1896 and raised five children. In the early 1900's he became a rural mail delivery man. In 1917 the family moved to Hollister, California where Peter became an orchardist. He lost Mary Celia in 1924 and "lost the farm/orchard" in the Depression. He then moved with his two young sons to Wilmington, California, in the harbor of Los Angeles, and became a watchman on the docks. He worked well into his 70's before retiring to live with his oldest son, John.

By 1910 Peter Jr. had abandoned the farming life to become a rural delivery postman. The family legends have him in a sleigh during the Dakota Winters, moving directly from farmhouse to farmhouse, with the roads invisible under the snow. He received a post card from a friend in California in 1909. The card planted a seed.

?b?Here are some Reasons to Move.?/b?

There is every indication that Robert Arthur Dixon, Peter Jr.'s father-in-law, was not a well man for decades after the Civil War. His application for pension supports this belief. He was surrounded by his children throughout this period and I have assumed that Peter Jr.'s move to the Dixon lands around 1905 was to help with his care.

Cousin Phyllis Goold has the post card, still part of the family archives, that supposedly opened Peter Jr.'s eyes to the possibility of life beyond the Dakotas. Here it is:

    Hollister, California - Postcard?tab?(see media)
Postmarked January 14, 1909 and addressed to "P. McLaren Jr. Vienna Clark Co S. Dak.," the handwriting on the back asks: Note the concrete walks and asphalt trim pavement. We are getting a fine rain. Temperature 58 degrees. How does that strike you?

Since Peter Jr. was up to his armpits in snow at the time, it probably struck him hard.

Robert Dixon died in February of 1917 and his daughter, Peter Jr.'s wife Mary Celia, had just given birth to their fifth child. At age forty four, Mary Celia was not in the best of health.

They had just endured another winter, and the weather in California has long been touted as a cure for anything that ails you. It was time to move west.

Peter McLaren, Jr. arrived with his family in Hollister, California in 1917. Peter was 51 years old, his wife, Mary Celia, was 45. Their children were Marion (19 years old), Marjorie (17), Elsie (13), John (5), and Robert (1). They settled west of town in an area of fruit orchards. Peter became an orchardist.

    ?b?Here is a California Timeline.?/b?
Cousin Phyllis Goold, daughter of Marjorie (McLaren) Butterfield, lived in and around Hollister all her life. Her father and her husband were both orchardists. So it is with some authority that she tells us the groves of fruit trees are orchards (not farms) and the folks who tend the orchards are orchardists (they don't like to be called farmers).

That was Peter Jr.'s chosen profession when he settled on San Juan Road, west of town, in 1917.

By 1920 Marion McLaren, the oldest child, had entered nursing school in San Francisco. In 1921 she graduated, married, and bore a son, William F. McLaughlin.

In 1922 Marjorie, the second daughter, married Earle Butterfield and they started their family (a girl and two boys) in Hollister.

In 1924 Peter Jr.'s wife, Mary Celia, died. She was 52 years old and had been in ill health for a number of years. Remember, she had born the last of their five children at age 44, which was rather unusual for the time. Her obituary stated she "has not been a very strong woman at any period of her life, and in recent years she has suffered much."

Peter is now a fifty eight year old widower with a twenty year old daughter and two sons, twelve and eight. At some point in the late 1920's the wheels have come off the dream wagon.

By 1930 Peter has moved to Wilmington, California, in the harbor of Los Angeles. He rents a home and finds a job as a watchman on the docks. His oldest son, John, now seventeen and a recent high school graduate, is working at a service station. This, remember, is the start of a horrific economic depression and they are fortunate to have any kind of work. Elsie, the youngest daughter, is now twenty five, single, boarding with a widowed woman in San Jose and working as a stenographer in a bank.

In January of 1934 Elsie dies. We are reasonably certain her death was by her own hand. You will find a tribute to Elsie in the Vignettes portion of this site.

This isn't good; but the story isn't over.

As the country emerged from the depression in the late 1930s John and Martha had the first of two sons. By 1942 John had secured a job with the Los Angeles Fire Department and would remain there for three decades, the rest of his working life. Their sons graduated from college, became professionals, and raised their own families.

So we can follow the arc of all these lives, from a sailing ship on the Atlantic, to a pine forest in Canada, to the plains of South Dakota, to the orchards of central California, and on . . . They dreamed, they struggled, they endured, and they made our lives possible. I borrowed the title "City of Dreams" from the song by the Talking Heads. Every time I hear it, think about it, I remember the gift they gave. We live in the cities they dreamed of. And every time I'm feeling down, getting a little cynical, I remember their graves, and their faces. I'm sitting with the sun streaming through the window, tapping on my computer, well fed and healthy. Can't you see them smile? We live their dreams!

By 1930 John Dixon McLaren, Peter Jr.'s eldest son, was dating Martha Elizabeth "Tookie" Winchester. They married in 1935 and began the final chapter, as the McLarens enter the City of Dreams.
