William passed through the subordient chairs and was Worshipful Master of the DePere Masonic Lodge. He was Chief Templar of the Temple of Honor at DePere.
The first record book of the Ripon Lodge #95. F&AM shows that while not a charter member, he soon took his three degrees in Masonry; 29 Dec 1857, 8 Jan 1858, and 12 Jan 1858.
William was a member of the West DePere Fire Department, serving four years as Chief.

At age 20 William was proficient in the use of nearly all band musical insturments and accepted a position with the Blakeley Concert & Oratorio Company as tenor singer. Later he was a member of the Harry Robinson Minstrel Company, as a tenor singer, traveling with them for four years. William was so versatile that he could fill replace any absent member on a moments notice during Company performances.

In February he left the DePere Agricultural Works to become associated with his brother-in-law David Thomas in the breeding of trotting horses on a farm six and a half miles southwest of Ripon. Among the trotting horses bred here, one, 'Barney F' made a record of 2:29 1/2 when five years old. Mr Workman also brought to Brown County 'Achilles', #2535 in Wallaces's Trotting Register, the first registered trotting-bred stallion brought to the county.
