Ballinasloe, County Galway, Connacht, Ireland

Notes:
The town developed as a crossing point on the River Suck, a tributary of the Shannon. The Irish placename ? meaning the mouth of the ford of the crowds ? reflects this purpose. The latter part of the name suggests the town has been a meeting place since ancient times. The patron saint of Ballinasloe is Saint Grellan, whom tradition believes built the first church in the area at Kilcloony. A local housing estate, a GAA club, the branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, and formerly a school are named after him.

Richard M?r de Burgh is credited with founding the town.

from Encyclopaedia Britannica

Ballinasloe, Irish B?al ?tha na Sluaighe, town, County Galway, Ireland, on the River Suck and a northerly extension of the Grand Canal. Originally a small settlement beside the medieval castle guarding the important Suck crossing, the town was developed mainly in the 18th century. It is the main market town of east County Galway and is noted for its livestock fairs, the largest in Ireland, which reached a peak in the mid-19th century. The famous local quarries supplied the masonry for a street of shop fronts in New York City.
