The following paragraph is based on data in Wikipedia
Elma township was opened for settlement in 1849; however the first settlers, Samuel Boyd and George Code, came from Lanark County, near Ottawa, in 1848. It was named in honour of Lady Elma Bruce, daughter of the eighth Earl of Elgin, Governor-general of Canada.
The map of Perth County circa 1951 from Ontario Archives locates the individual townships, city, towns and villages of the county. (Click at the bottom of the page to see the map enlarged.)
A sketchmap from Ontario GenWeb provides a simple illustration of the location of the townships.
