Elma township was opened for settlement in 1849; however the first settlers, Samuel Boyd and George Code, came from Lanark County, near Ottawa, in 1848. It was named in honour of Lady Elma Bruce, daughter of the eighth Earl of Elgin, Governor-general of Canada.
